What matters first

Ride these first

With Early Entry, start in Pandora and ride Avatar Flight of Passage, then Na'vi River Journey while it is still a walk on. Without Early Entry, the smarter 2026 move is to buy a Single Pass for Flight of Passage and rope drop Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest instead.

Only one ride needs a Single Pass

Avatar Flight of Passage is the most popular ride and the only Animal Kingdom attraction sold as Lightning Lane Single Pass, bought one ride at a time. Everything else that takes a Lightning Lane sits in the cheaper Multi Pass bundle, and there are no tiers, so you can book any three in advance.

Most rides have no height limit

Only three rides have a height minimum: Kali River Rapids at 38 inches, plus Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage at 44 inches. Every other ride, including Na'vi River Journey, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and the new Zootopia show, is open to any height, so a shorter child can still fill a day.

The planning sequence

Use the sequence below to decide how this should shape the trip.

Kilimanjaro SafarisAfricaLong ride whose line builds fast, a strong first stop without Early Entry

Kali River RapidsAsiaYou will get wet, shorter standby midday, often seasonal in cooler months
Zootopia: Better ZoogetherDiscovery IslandNew 2026 show inside the Tree of Life, an easy air conditioned break
1Decide if you have Early Entry, which flips the whole plan
2With Early Entry, walk to Pandora for Flight of Passage, then Na'vi River Journey
3Without Early Entry, buy a Single Pass for Flight of Passage and rope drop Kilimanjaro Safaris
4Ride Expedition Everest while its standby is still short
5Use Multi Pass return times for Kali River Rapids and the rest

Pandora

The one ride worth paying for

Avatar Flight of Passage sits inside these floating mountains, and it is both the best ride at Animal Kingdom and the only one sold as Lightning Lane Single Pass, bought one ride at a time. On a busy day the standby line is long from the moment the park opens, so a Single Pass is usually the smartest purchase here. If you have Early Entry as a Disney resort guest, you can instead rope drop it for free, then ride Na'vi River Journey next door while it is still a walk on. Everything else worth a Lightning Lane, including Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and Kali River Rapids, shares the cheaper Multi Pass, and Animal Kingdom has no ride tiers, so you can book any three of them in advance.

What to ride first at Animal Kingdom

The biggest lever on your day is whether you have Early Entry, the thirty minute head start Disney resort guests and a few other eligible guests get before regular park open. With Early Entry, walk straight into Pandora and ride Avatar Flight of Passage first, then Na'vi River Journey while it is still close to a walk on. Without Early Entry, the standby line for Flight of Passage is already long by the time you reach it, so the smarter 2026 move is to buy a Single Pass for it and rope drop the other side of the park instead. Head to Kilimanjaro Safaris in Africa, a long ride whose line grows fast, then Expedition Everest in Asia while its standby is still short.

How Lightning Lane works here in 2026

Disney replaced Genie Plus with two products. Lightning Lane Multi Pass is one daily purchase that bundles most of the park, including Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Kali River Rapids, Na'vi River Journey, and the headline shows. Animal Kingdom uses no tiers, so you can book any three of those in advance and add more as you use them. Lightning Lane Single Pass is separate and sold one ride at a time for a single headliner, Avatar Flight of Passage. The most common Animal Kingdom plan is the simplest: skip Multi Pass, buy one Single Pass for Flight of Passage, and ride everything else in standby, since the rest of the park rarely posts a punishing wait.

Height requirements, ride by ride

Animal Kingdom is the easiest of the four Disney World parks for short riders. Only three rides have a height minimum. Kali River Rapids needs 38 inches, and both Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage need 44 inches. Every other attraction, including Na'vi River Journey, Kilimanjaro Safaris, the Wildlife Express Train, the walking trails, and the new Zootopia: Better Zoogether show inside the Tree of Life, is open to any height. That means a child too short for the coasters can still do almost the entire park. Disney also offers Rider Switch on the height restricted rides, so two adults can take turns without both waiting the line twice.

What happened to DinoLand and DINOSAUR

If you are working from an older guide, ignore the DinoLand section. DINOSAUR took its last riders on February 2, 2026, and the whole DinoLand U.S.A. area has closed for a multi year rebuild into a new land called Tropical Americas, planned to open in 2027 with an Indiana Jones adventure built on the old DINOSAUR ride system plus an Encanto themed family ride. For 2026 that leaves Animal Kingdom with a tighter ride list centered on Pandora, Africa, and Asia, which is exactly why ride order matters more here than raw park size suggests.

Deep Arrival ride plan

If you do one thing, decide your Flight of Passage plan before anything else. With Early Entry, rope drop Pandora for Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey, then move to Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest. Without Early Entry, buy a single Flight of Passage Single Pass, open with Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest, and fill the rest of the day with Kali River Rapids, the walking trails, and the Tree of Life show in standby. With a young child, skip the paid passes entirely, since only three rides have a height limit and the calmer experiences carry the day.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These are the small decisions that quietly derail an otherwise good plan.

1. Sprinting to Avatar Flight of Passage at regular rope drop

Without Early Entry its line is already long when you arrive, so a Single Pass is usually a better buy than an hour in standby.

2. Planning around DINOSAUR

It closed on February 2, 2026, and DinoLand is now walled off for the Tropical Americas rebuild, so a 2026 day cannot include it.

3. Treating Na'vi River Journey as a quick boat

It loads slowly and the line grows all day, so ride it early, with Early Entry, or on a Multi Pass return.

4. Measuring a child at home and hoping

Disney measures at the ride, so check the real height against the 38 and 44 inch limits before you build the day around Everest or Flight of Passage.

FAQ

Common planning questions

What is the best ride at Animal Kingdom?
Avatar Flight of Passage in Pandora is widely considered the best ride at Animal Kingdom and one of the best at all of Walt Disney World. It is a flight simulator over the world of Pandora, and it is the only ride in the park sold as Lightning Lane Single Pass. Expedition Everest, the park coaster in Asia, is the usual second pick.
What should I ride first at Animal Kingdom?
It depends on Early Entry. With the thirty minute head start, ride Avatar Flight of Passage first, then Na'vi River Journey while the line is short. Without Early Entry, buy a Single Pass for Flight of Passage and rope drop Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest on the other side of the park instead.
Which Animal Kingdom rides have a height requirement?
Only three. Kali River Rapids requires 38 inches, and Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage each require 44 inches. Na'vi River Journey, Kilimanjaro Safaris, the Wildlife Express Train, the walking trails, and the Zootopia show have no height limit, so shorter children can ride almost everything.
Do I need to pay for Lightning Lane at Animal Kingdom?
Usually not much. Animal Kingdom has no ride tiers and most attractions rarely post a long wait, so the common plan is to skip Multi Pass and buy only a single Lightning Lane Single Pass for Avatar Flight of Passage. On a very busy day, adding a Multi Pass for Expedition Everest and Kilimanjaro Safaris can help.
Is DINOSAUR still at Animal Kingdom?
No. DINOSAUR closed permanently on February 2, 2026, and the DinoLand U.S.A. area shut with it for a rebuild into a new land called Tropical Americas, planned for 2027 with an Indiana Jones attraction on the old ride system. It is not part of an Animal Kingdom visit in 2026.
