Half thrill park, half working zoo
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay opened in 1959 beside the old Anheuser Busch brewery and grew into a 335 acre park themed around Africa, now run by United Parks and Resorts. Its identity is a double act: an award winning coaster lineup on one side, and an accredited zoo with more than 200 species on the other.
The centerpiece of the animal side is the 65 acre Serengeti Plain, an open savanna with giraffes, zebras, and rhinos that the train, the SkyRide, and a paid safari truck all cross. The centerpiece of the ride side is Iron Gwazi, billed by the park as North America’s tallest hybrid coaster and the fastest and steepest of its kind in the world.

Who it suits, and who should plan differently
A strong match
- Coaster riders at 48 inches and up. Iron Gwazi and Cheetah Hunt open at 48, and the full 54 inch lineup is the deepest in the state.
- Families who want animals in the same ticket. More than 200 species, the Serengeti Plain, and the Animal Care Center are included with admission.
- Mixed age groups. Sesame Street Safari of Fun and the Wild Oasis rainforest zone carry young kids while older riders chase coasters.
- Event season visitors. Christmas Town is included with admission, and Howl-O-Scream anchors fall nights on its own ticket.
Plan differently
- If everyone is under 42 inches. The kid zones are real, but the headline lineup stays out of reach; LEGOLAND is built for that trip.
- If you expect Orlando park hours. Winter days can end at 5 or 6 pm; check the calendar before promising an evening.
- If you plan a summer afternoon arrival. Storms roll through most summer afternoons; mornings are the reliable window, and the park’s weather policy covers washouts.

The one day plan
Rope drop the headliner
Be at the gate before 10 and walk straight to Iron Gwazi, then Cheetah Hunt next door. The first hour is worth two afternoon hours in line.
Clear your band before lunch
Run the coasters your group measures for while lines are short: the 54 inch set for tall riders, Phoenix Rising and Cobra’s Curse for the 42 inch crowd.
Spend the hot hours with the animals
Midday heat and summer storms are animal time: the Serengeti Plain, Myombe Reserve, the Animal Care Center, and the paid Serengeti Safari truck if it fits the budget.
Close on the evening the calendar gives you
Summer and event nights run to 9 or 10 pm for a second coaster round; winter days end at 5 or 6, so front load everything. Check for Howl-O-Scream or Christmas Town before you plan the night.
Getting there and what it costs to park
The park says about an hour via I-4; from the Disney and International Drive corridor, plan 75 to 90 minutes in traffic. A free daily round trip shuttle runs from Orlando, confirmed through July 31, 2026.
The park sits eight miles northeast of downtown at 10165 N McKinley Drive, about thirty minutes from Tampa International Airport and the beaches.
General parking is $35 plus tax and preferred is $48, prepurchased online; pricing is seasonal. Silver passes park free, and Gold and Platinum add preferred.
The park pairs naturally with a LEGOLAND day from the same base, and Adventure Island across the street extends a summer stay. The park is cashless.
Bottom line: arrive at opening, park once, and the whole lineup plus the animals fits one long day.
Animals, events, and the park across the street
A real zoo, not a petting corner
More than 200 species with accredited care: the 65 acre Serengeti Plain, Myombe Reserve gorillas, Tiger Lodge, Penguin Point, and the Animal Care Center where guests watch veterinary work. Lion and Hyena Ridge opens in 2026.
Serengeti Safari
A 30 minute open truck tour onto the plain with giraffe feeding, from about $32 to $40 as of July 2026, ages 5 and up. Park admission is required and not included.
Nights that change the day
Summer Nights runs late hours May 22 to August 9, 2026. Howl-O-Scream, September 11 to November 1, is a separate night ticket. Christmas Town, from November 13 into early January, is included with admission.
Adventure Island
The seasonal water park across McKinley Drive is its own gate with its own ticket and calendar, roughly March into November. Combo products like the 2026 Fun Card cover both parks; a Busch Gardens ticket alone does not.
