Zion National Park Scenic Drive: What Opens to Cars Nov 29

For 27 days, from November 29 through December 25, you can drive your own car up the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Every other day of the 2026 season the road belongs to the shuttle, and the National Park Service states the rule without exceptions.

That window is the reason a quiet December trip works differently from every other month at Zion. Our Zion in winter guide is built around the same stretch of calendar, when the canyon empties and the road opens.

At a Glance
  • Drive it yourself: November 29 through December 25, the only shuttle free stretch of the year.
  • Before that: shuttles run 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. from October 25, down from a 6 p.m. last departure now.
  • After that: holiday service returns December 26 to January 2, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Always open to cars: the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, Kolob Terrace Road and Kolob Canyons Scenic Drive.

The Rule Is Absolute While the Shuttle Runs

The park closes the loophole most visitors try first. Its wording is that during shuttle season you cannot drive a personal vehicle on the Scenic Drive, and that this includes before shuttles start for the day and after they stop running.

So a 6 a.m. drive in October is not allowed even though no shuttle is moving, and neither is an evening one after the last bus. The road is closed to private cars for the whole of every shuttle day, not just for shuttle hours.

The Schedule Steps Down Twice Before It Stops

Right now the canyon line runs from 7 a.m. with the last departure from the visitor center at 6 p.m., a phase that holds through October 24. From October 25 the last departure moves back an hour to 5 p.m.

That hour matters more than it sounds in late autumn, because the return leg runs later than the outbound one. The Utah Office of Tourism lists the last bus out of Temple of Sinawava at 6:15 p.m. in the October to November phase.

Twenty Seven Days, Then the Holiday Shuttle Returns

Service stops entirely on November 29 and does not resume until December 26, when a holiday schedule runs 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through January 2. Those eight holiday days put the road back under shuttle control at the busiest moment of the winter.

The practical read is that early December is the target, not late December. A trip booked for the week between Christmas and New Year lands inside the holiday shuttle window and loses the drive.

What the Shuttle Is Actually Like

It is not a hardship. The canyon line has nine stops, buses arrive every five to ten minutes, and the full run to Temple of Sinawava takes about 45 minutes each way, so roughly 90 minutes round trip if you never get off.

No permit or reservation is needed to ride, though the park entrance fee still applies and the pass is good for seven days. Park lots fill early, which is why Springdale sells paid parking and runs its own free shuttle to the pedestrian entrance.

The Roads You Can Always Drive

Only the Scenic Drive is restricted. The Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, Kolob Terrace Road and the Kolob Canyons Scenic Drive stay open to private vehicles year round, which is how most visitors see the park’s other halves.

Those roads carry their own seasonal risk rather than a shuttle rule. Kolob Terrace Road and Lava Point Road close most years from autumn until spring once snow arrives, and the Mt. Carmel Highway shuts intermittently for snow, ice and rockfall.

Two Published Schedules Do Not Agree

The state tourism page says the shuttle does not run December through February except on weekends in February and during the holiday season near the end of December. The park’s own 2026 schedule lists no February weekend service at all.

Treat the park’s schedule as the authority for this season and the state page as a description of a typical year. If you are planning a February trip on the assumption that weekend shuttles run, confirm it with the park before you book.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Want to drive the Scenic Drive yourself Book between November 29 and December 25. No other date in the season allows it.
Are visiting between now and October 24 Plan around a 6 p.m. last departure from the visitor center, and a later last bus back down the canyon.
Are visiting between October 25 and November 28 The last departure is 5 p.m. Work backwards from that, not from sunset.
Have a trip booked for Christmas week You are inside the holiday shuttle window, December 26 to January 2, and the road reverts to buses.
Were counting on cycling the Scenic Drive Check first. A flash flood restriction closed it to foot and bicycle traffic with no published end date.
Planning Impact

October 25 is the first step down. The last departure loses an hour, which shortens any plan built around a late afternoon start at the top of the canyon.

November 29 is the day the road opens. It is also when the park’s transport disappears, so a breakdown or a full pullout has no bus to fall back on.

December 26 closes the window again. The drive-yourself stretch is 27 days and it ends before the holiday crowds arrive, not after.

Frequently Asked

When can I drive my own car on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive?

From November 29 through December 25, 2026. That is the only stretch of the season when the shuttle does not run and private vehicles are allowed.

Can I drive it early in the morning before the shuttles start?

No. The park states the restriction covers the time before shuttles start for the day and after they stop running, not only the hours buses are moving.

What are the shuttle hours right now?

First shuttle at 7 a.m., last departure from the visitor center at 6 p.m., through October 24. From October 25 the last departure moves to 5 p.m.

Does the shuttle run at Christmas?

Yes, from December 26 through January 2, on an 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. schedule. Christmas Day itself falls inside the no service window.

Do I need a reservation for the shuttle?

No. The park says no permit or reservation is needed to ride, though you still need an entrance pass, which is valid for seven days.

Which Zion roads can I always drive?

The Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, Kolob Terrace Road and the Kolob Canyons Scenic Drive are open to private vehicles year round, subject to snow and rockfall closures.
