Yosemite Overnight Parking Access Ends on Tioga Road Oct 15

Yosemite National Park will stop overnight parking on Tioga Road from October 15, 2026, until the road reopens in spring, according to the park’s vehicle restrictions page last updated August 3, 2026. The same date applies to Glacier Point Road between Badger Pass and Glacier Point. The National Park Service states overnight parking is not permitted in that window so vehicles are not left on high roads that can close in snow and stay closed until spring.

If you are backpacking the high country and plan to finish on or after October 15, you cannot leave a car at a Tioga trailhead overnight. Arrange a ride, a Valley lodging night, or an earlier exit. Deep Arrival’s Yosemite National Park guide is the place to reset the rest of the itinerary, including valley lodging when the high lots go dark.

Overnight Parking Stops Oct 15 on Two High Roads

The park’s standing 2026 rule is specific. On Tioga Road, overnight parking is not permitted between October 15 and the opening of the road in spring. On Glacier Point Road, overnight parking between Badger Pass and Glacier Point is not permitted in the same window. Day use can continue while the roads remain open. The ban is about leaving a car from sunset to sunrise, not about driving through in daylight.

The visitor newspaper for this season states the same October 15 start and tells readers to call the recorded line for current road information. That newspaper also repeats that sleeping overnight in a parking lot or on the roadside is not permitted, and that sleeping inside a vehicle is allowed only at a registered campsite. Those two rules stack: after October 15 you cannot stash a car on Tioga, and you still cannot sleep in a lot anywhere in the park.

Yosemite Conservancy’s 2026 briefing treats Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road as seasonal corridors that close with winter weather, usually from November into late May or June, and tells visitors to check the National Park Service for current closures. The Conservancy does not replace the October 15 overnight date. Use the park pages for the parking rule and the Conservancy page for the broader 2026 season frame.

Backcountry Exits Need a Ride After That Date

The practical traveler is a backpacker with a wilderness permit whose last night is October 15 or later. Once overnight parking ends, a car left at Cathedral Lakes, Tenaya Lake, or any other Tioga trailhead can be trapped if snow closes the road. The park’s own winter guidance is blunt: if you plan to exit the wilderness after October 15, you need a ride. No public transportation is available on that corridor once overnight parking is gone.

Book the ride before you start the hike. Friends in Yosemite Valley, a commercial shuttle that still runs that week, or a second driver who stays in a reserved campsite are the options that actually work. Do not assume a YARTS bus will be waiting at Tuolumne Meadows after the lots go overnight-dark. Confirm the live YARTS calendar separately. Deep Arrival’s where to stay near Yosemite page is the fallback when the high trailhead is no longer a legal overnight lot.

Wilderness permits remain required year-round and are reserved on Recreation.gov. The parking ban does not cancel a permit. It changes how you stage the car. A party that planned a Tioga drop-off and a later Valley pickup should reverse that: leave the car in the Valley or in a town with winter access, and get dropped at the trailhead on the start day.

Tioga Is Open Now, Glacier Point Is Not

As of September 26, the park’s current conditions board lists Tioga Road as open, with 10-minute delays in Tuolumne Meadows and 15-minute delays Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between Olmsted Point and Tioga Pass. That is weekday road work on a still-open high road. It is not the October 15 parking switch. Drive it in daylight through mid-October if the board still says open.

Glacier Point Road is a different problem this week. The same board lists it temporarily closed because of smoky conditions and firefighting on the Dome Fire. Deep Arrival already covered that Dome Fire closure of Glacier Point Road and Chilnualna trails. Do not treat the October 15 overnight rule as a reopening date. The fire closure can last past or end before October 15. Check the live board the morning you drive.

The October 15 overnight rule still matters for Glacier Point once that road is open again. If firefighters give the road back in early October, the overnight ban still starts on the 15th. If the road stays closed, the parking rule is moot until spring. Either way, do not leave a car on Glacier Point Road overnight after October 14.

Campground Closures Cluster in the Same Window

High-country camping is already winding down around the parking date. The current conditions board lists Tuolumne Meadows Campground closing September 27, Porcupine Flat closing October 11, and Crane Flat and Tamarack Flat closing October 12. Those closings remove legal overnight vehicle stays near Tioga just as the roadside and trailhead ban begins. After October 12, a Tioga traveler who wants to sleep in a vehicle needs a reserved valley campsite or a room outside the park.

East-side access has its own dated work. Deep Arrival’s note on Lee Vining US 395 delays starting September 28 sits on the same approach used by drivers coming from Mono Lake to Tioga Pass. Combine that rebuild with the October 15 overnight ban and you get a two-week window where the east entrance is slower by day and illegal as a car-camp at night. If your plan is a one-night car camp at Olmsted Point, move it before October 15 or drop it.

Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road typically close to through traffic sometime in November, depending on snow. October 15 is not that closure. It is the date the park stops allowing cars to sit unattended overnight so a surprise storm cannot bury them until June. Day drivers can still use Tioga after October 15 until snow actually closes the gate. Watch the recorded line, not a calendar guess, for the full winter closure.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Finish a Tioga backpack on or after October 15 Do not leave a car at the trailhead overnight. Arrange a ride or stage the car in Yosemite Valley or a winter-access town.
Want a scenic Tioga day drive in late October Drive in daylight while the current conditions board still says open, and do not leave the car overnight.
Planned Glacier Point at dawn after October 14 Skip the overnight lot. Confirm the Dome Fire closure first, then use a same-day drive from the Valley if the road is open.
Need a legal place to sleep in a vehicle Hold a reserved campsite. Roadside and trailhead lots on Tioga and Glacier Point are not legal overnight after October 14.
Planning Impact

September 27 is the Tuolumne Meadows campground close. After that night, the main high-country campground is gone and trailhead lots become the only nearby car option until October 15 ends those too.

October 15 is the overnight parking gate. From that date until spring opening, do not leave a vehicle overnight on Tioga Road or on Glacier Point Road east of Badger Pass.

The November snow closure is separate. Daytime through-travel can continue after October 15 until snow actually closes the road. Use 209-372-0200, then 1, then 1, the morning you drive.

Frequently Asked

When does Yosemite ban overnight parking on Tioga Road?

October 15, 2026, through the spring opening of the road, per the park’s vehicle restrictions page updated August 3, 2026.

Does the October 15 rule also cover Glacier Point Road?

Yes. Overnight parking is not permitted on Glacier Point Road between Badger Pass and Glacier Point from October 15 until that road reopens in spring.

Can I still drive Tioga Road after October 15?

Yes, in daylight, while the current conditions board lists the road as open. The October 15 change is overnight parking, not the full winter closure, which usually comes in November with snow.

Can I leave my car at a Tioga trailhead for a backpack after October 15?

No. Arrange a ride for the finish. The park says there is no public transportation for that pickup, and an overnight car can be buried if snow closes the road.

Is Glacier Point Road open now?

No. As of September 26 the current conditions board lists Glacier Point Road closed for Dome Fire smoke and firefighting. That closure is separate from the October 15 overnight rule.

Where can I sleep in my vehicle in Yosemite after October 15?

Only in a campsite you are registered to occupy. Roadside, trailhead, and parking-lot sleeping is not permitted, and Tioga and Glacier Point lots are included in the overnight ban.
