One road in Yellowstone never closes, and it is not the one most autumn visitors are driving. The stretch from the North Entrance at Gardiner through Tower Junction to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City is the only road the park keeps open to regular vehicles year round.
Everything else in Yellowstone has a date on it. Yellowstone’s published 2026 projections put two closures ahead of the rest, and both land on October 12.
- October 12: Dunraven Pass, the Beartooth Highway and the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway are projected to close.
- October 31: every other park road closes to regular vehicles.
- Year round: only Gardiner to Cooke City by way of Tower Junction.
- Watch out: campgrounds and stores shut through September, weeks before the roads do.
The Answer Is the Northern Road, and Only That One
Gardiner to Cooke City is the road the park plows. It is why Lamar Valley stays reachable in winter for wildlife watching while the rest of the loop goes quiet, and it is the answer to the question most late season itineraries are really asking.
The park is direct about the rest: most roads are closed to regular vehicles from early November to late April, with commercially guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches taking over from mid December to mid March.
October 12 Takes Two High Passes and a Highway
Dunraven Pass, the Grand Loop stretch between Canyon Village and Tower Fall, is projected to close for the season on October 12. The same date is projected for the Beartooth Highway, US 212, and the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, Wyoming 296.
The park flags both as high elevation routes that generally see more winter weather than anything else in the area, and it says plainly that the closing dates are subject to change. Treat October 12 as the optimistic case rather than a promise.
Losing the Beartooth Changes How You Reach Cooke City
This is the practical consequence that catches people. The Beartooth Highway is the scenic approach to the Northeast Entrance from Red Lodge, and after it closes the only remaining way in or out of Cooke City is through the park itself from Gardiner.
Anyone routing a road trip through Cooke City in late October should plan a there and back through the north of the park, not a loop. There is no alternative once the Beartooth is gated.
October 31 Takes Everything Else
The West Entrance roads to Madison, Old Faithful and Norris, plus Mammoth to Norris and Norris to Canyon, run to October 31. So do the East Entrance road over Sylvan Pass, Canyon to Bridge Bay, and the South Entrance roads by way of West Thumb and Craig Pass.
Oversnow travel then opens on December 15, which leaves roughly six weeks in which most of the park is reachable by nothing at all. Roads typically open at 8 a.m. on the first day of each window.
Services Close Weeks Before the Roads Do
An open road is not an open park. Bridge Bay Campground closed on September 14 and its marina on September 13, with boat tours running to September 20. The concessionaire lists Bridge Bay as a May 15 to September 14 season for 2026.
Canyon Campground closes September 19, Grant Village Campground September 26, and the Grant Village general store and Lake House Restaurant September 27. A late October drive over roads that are technically open can mean no campground, no fuel repair service and no restaurant for a long way, which is when our guide to where to stay in Yellowstone starts earning its keep.
One Lane at Mammoth, and Five Nights Closed
Construction continues to the end of the season. The bridge half a mile southeast of Mammoth Hot Springs toward Tower Junction is down to a single lane with delays of up to 15 minutes, around the clock, into late October.
Five full overnight closures from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. are planned there after September 7, with advance notice promised, and oversized or overweight vehicles cannot cross at all. Bridge Bay expects delays of up to 15 minutes into November, and the Old Faithful area the same during October.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Want Dunraven Pass or the Beartooth | Go before October 12, and check the road status the morning you drive. |
| Are staying in Cooke City after October 12 | Route in and out through Gardiner. The Beartooth approach will be gated. |
| Are visiting in late October | Roads to Old Faithful and Norris run to October 31, but campgrounds and stores have already closed. |
| Are visiting in November or early December | Only Gardiner to Cooke City is open. Oversnow travel does not begin until December 15. |
| Drive an oversized vehicle | You cannot cross the Mammoth to Tower bridge during the works. Plan a different approach. |
October 12 is the real deadline for the scenic drives. Dunraven and the Beartooth go almost three weeks before the rest of the park.
The services calendar runs ahead of the roads calendar. Check what is open where you are sleeping and eating, not only what is drivable.
Every date here is a projection. The park says so itself, and high passes are the first to move.
