The Whiskey Fire crossed onto the eastern side of New Mexico’s Manzano Mountains during the week ending September 11, adding a fresh reason to check trail restrictions before a mountain trip. The Mountainair Dispatch’s September 11 update, citing the U.S. Forest Service, reported growth across the crest and north into Jaramillo Canyon while a defined recreation closure remained in effect.
The current Cibola National Forest closure order, checked September 12, restricts specified Mountainair Ranger District lands, roads, trails and recreation sites. It does not close every Manzano route: Spruce Spring Trail 189 and Road 253 remain open boundary routes, but adjacent lands described in the order are closed.
- Fresh development: September 11 reporting describes fire growth across the Manzano crest.
- Access restriction: A mapped closure covers specified Mountainair Ranger District recreation routes and sites.
- Order window: September 1 through September 30, unless rescinded.
- Important exceptions: Spruce Spring Trail 189 and Road 253 remain open, not the adjacent closed lands.
- Before departure: Check the complete approach, trail and campground against the current order and map.
What Changed Around the Whiskey Fire
The September 11 Dispatch report places the latest growth on the eastern side of the range and to the north in Jaramillo Canyon. It describes steep, difficult access on the western side and direct suppression work with air support on the eastern side, based on the Forest Service’s Friday update.
That reporting is a dated operational update, not a live perimeter feed. The practical access decision comes from the current closure order, which already took effect September 1. Friday’s fire growth should not be confused with a newly issued blanket closure of the entire mountain range.
The Dispatch identifies the fire as lightning caused, with a start date of August 21, north of Osha Peak and south of Capilla Peak. It also notes that smoke may be visible from nearby communities. Smoke visibility alone does not establish that a particular community is evacuated or that every road near it is closed.
Which Manzano Trails and Sites Are Affected
The federal order covers a defined area in Torrance County and lists recreation routes within it, including Trigo Trail 185, Comanche Canyon Trail 182, Osha Trail 100, New Canyon Trail 101, Trail Canyon Trail 176 and Encino Trail 181. Restrictions also include the Manzano Crest Trail 170 where it lies within the described closure, not necessarily its entire length.
Named affected recreation sites include Trigo Trailhead, Comanche Trailhead, New Canyon Campground, New Canyon Trailhead, Manzano Crest South Trailhead and Manzano Crest North Trailhead. Road restrictions include Forest Roads 245, 245C and 245D. Visitors planning a campground stay or trailhead pickup need to check those access points as carefully as the walking route.
The order’s map and boundary description control the exact footprint. A trail name by itself may be insufficient, especially for a long route crossing more than one area. For a through hike, check every segment and connecting trail, including the route planned for the return journey.
Open Boundary Routes Do Not Open the Closed Area
The Forest Service explicitly leaves Spruce Spring Trail 189 open while closing the described National Forest System lands north and east of it. Road 253 also remains open, with the described lands north of the road closed. These are meaningful distinctions for visitors checking alternatives, but neither is permission to enter the restricted area from an open edge.
An itinerary that begins on an open road can still fail the access check when it reaches a closed campground, trailhead or connecting trail. Treat the approach and destination as separate checks. Do not use an open boundary route as a workaround to reach a trail inside the closure.
The order prohibits being on the described lands, roads and trails for public and firefighter safety. Parking outside the restricted area and walking in does not avoid the prohibition. An unblocked track or a route displayed by a navigation application is not evidence that the Forest Service has reopened it.
What September 30 Means for Trip Planning
Order 03-03-04-26-21 took effect at 8 a.m. September 1 and runs through 11:59 p.m. September 30 unless rescinded. That is the stated order window, not a guaranteed forecast for when conditions will permit a particular hike. A later trip still needs a fresh check for any revised, replaced or rescinded order.
The listed exceptions include authorized permit holders, people carrying out official duties and specified access for private property owners. Ordinary visitors should not assume those exceptions apply to a recreational outing. The Mountainair Ranger District contact number in the notice is (505) 847-2990.
| Planned trip | Access check |
|---|---|
| New Canyon camping or trailhead visit | The named campground and trailhead are in the restriction list. |
| Manzano Crest hike | Check the exact segment against the closure map, not only the trail name. |
| Spruce Spring Trail 189 or Road 253 | The boundary route remains open; adjacent described lands do not. |
| Trip later in September | Recheck the current order before committing to the closed route. |
The latest fire-growth report makes the route check timely. It does not supply permission to use a closed trail or establish a new reopening date.
Choose an alternative only after checking its full route. A named open boundary road or trail does not establish access to every nearby recreation site.
Are all Manzano Mountains trails closed?
No. The order defines a particular closed area and explicitly leaves Spruce Spring Trail 189 and Road 253 open. Check the mapped boundaries for your route.
Is New Canyon Campground affected?
Yes. New Canyon Campground and New Canyon Trailhead are among the recreation sites named in the current closure order.
Can I walk into the closure from an open road?
No. The order prohibits being on the described closed lands, roads and trails; an open approach does not remove that restriction.
When does the Whiskey Fire closure end?
The current order runs through September 30 unless rescinded. Check for an official change before planning access, because the date is not a guarantee of future trail conditions.
