WestJet Adds Five Winter Sun Routes From Calgary Regina Winnipeg and Ottawa

Canadian winter sun shoppers just got five more nonstop city pairs to put on the calendar. WestJet will add weekly flights from Calgary, Winnipeg, Regina, and Ottawa into Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic for the 2026 to 2027 peak season.

The first of the new services starts as early as late November 2026. The practical question is which weekly flight matches your gateway, and when live inventory appears on the airline site.

The headline first is Calgary to Merida. WestJet frames that link as its first nonstop between Western Canada and Yucatan’s cultural capital, and as the only nonstop on that pair when the schedule begins.

The five new nonstops and their start windows

According to WestJet’s official winter route release, the airline is adding five leisure nonstops for winter 2026 to 2027. The list pairs Prairie and Ottawa gateways with Mexico and Latin Caribbean sun markets.

• Calgary (YYC) to Merida, Mexico (MID): once weekly, beginning December 17, 2026. WestJet calls this its first nonstop into Merida and the only nonstop between Yucatan’s capital and Western Canada at launch.
• Winnipeg (YWG) to Belize City (BZE): once weekly, beginning November 28, 2026.
• Winnipeg (YWG) to Punta Cana (PUJ): once weekly, beginning December 14, 2026.
• Regina (YQR) to San Jose del Cabo (SJD): once weekly, beginning December 14, 2026.
• Ottawa (YOW) to Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR): once weekly, beginning December 20, 2026.

All five are framed as seasonal winter products, not year-round daily trunks. A weekly leisure nonstop can sell out on peak holiday weeks even when midweek space looks open on paper.

Why Merida is the standout new market

Most of the list extends known sun brands into secondary Canadian gateways. Merida is the market opener.

WestJet presents it as a first-time nonstop from Calgary into a city known for colonial architecture, Yucatan cuisine, and inland day trips. That is a different product than pure beach-resort packaging.

That changes the trip design. A Cabo, Punta Cana, or Liberia week often centers on a resort transfer.

Merida more often rewards a city base plus day trips to archaeological sites and coastal towns. Travelers who want pure sand and all-inclusive logistics may still prefer SJD or PUJ.

Travelers who want food, culture, and a less resort-packaged Mexican city get a cleaner airlift path if the Calgary schedule holds. Calgary Airport leadership is quoted in the WestJet release as welcoming another direct southern option for local leisure demand.

That does not guarantee high load factors. It does show the gateway is treating Merida as a real leisure product, not a one-off charter experiment.

What Winnipeg, Regina, and Ottawa travelers actually gain

Winnipeg picks up two weekly sun targets: Belize City and Punta Cana. That matters for Manitoba travelers who currently stitch sun trips through a hub connection and a long connection day.

Belize City is a gateway city, not the beach itself. Many vacationers continue by domestic flight or boat to Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, or the cayes.

Ottawa to Liberia packages are described as a first for that product set. The full Sunwing Vacations winter package window cited in the release runs from November 1, 2026, through April 30, 2027.
