South Western Railway’s autumn timetable, in force from 20 September 2026, says trains towards Clapham Junction will not call at Wandsworth Town between 11:00 and 14:00 on Mondays only while Network Rail finishes step-free lift works. That skip window runs through the last Monday before the works end date of Sunday 11 October, which is Monday 5 October 2026. The operator’s published PTT01 notes are the timetable in your ticket, not the older weekday wording still sitting on some engineering listings.
If you are heading into Waterloo around midday on a Monday, stay on the train to Clapham Junction and come back one stop. Clapham Junction is the interchange those skipped trains still serve, so the extra ride is short, but you should budget a connection rather than assume a direct alighting at Wandsworth Town.
- Skip days: Mondays only, 11:00 to 14:00, through 5 October 2026.
- Direction: Trains towards Clapham Junction and London Waterloo do not call.
- Works end: Sunday 11 October 2026, per Network Rail and SWR.
- Platform now: Platform 3 is closed; trains call at platform 4.
- Lifts: Step-free access is scheduled for summer 2027, with a new Odyssey Way entrance.
Monday Midday Trains Toward Clapham Junction Do Not Stop
Network Rail is installing lifts at Wandsworth Town under the Department for Transport Access for All programme, with extra money from Wandsworth Council. The Wessex Access for All project page says the station stays open, with service changes and platform diversions while the lifts and a second entrance go in.
The first construction phase, from 11 May to 26 July, skipped trains towards Putney between 11:00 and 14:00 on Mondays to Thursdays. That phase is over. The current phase, from 27 July to 11 October, reversed the skip: trains towards Clapham Junction are the ones that pass through without stopping, and South Western Railway has narrowed that skip to Mondays only in the 20 September to 12 December timetable.
Rush hours, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays keep their normal calling pattern. If your Monday train leaves Wandsworth Town before 11:00 or after 14:00, the skip does not apply. The three-hour hole sits in the late morning and early afternoon, which is exactly when a visitor coming from Heathrow, a hotel near Waterloo, or a day trip from the Windsor lines is most likely to assume every stopping service will still pause here.
Getting Off at Clapham Junction and Coming Back
When a train does not call, South Western Railway and Network Rail tell you to continue to Clapham Junction, then take the next service back towards Putney to alight at Wandsworth Town. There are typically three or four connecting trains an hour on this stretch of the Windsor and Reading lines, so the extra time is usually one wait plus a few minutes of running time, not a long detour across London.
Do not walk from Clapham Junction to Wandsworth Town unless you already know the streets. The rail replacement is the next train, not a bus substitution for this specific skip. Local buses from Putney can work if you are already west of the station, but they do not beat a same-platform or same-station connection at Clapham Junction for anyone already on a Waterloo-bound train.
Buy a ticket to Wandsworth Town as usual. The skip is a calling-pattern change, not a line closure, so you remain valid on the train that overshoots and on the return hop. If you hold an Oyster or contactless PAYG journey, tap in and out at the stations you actually use; do not tap at Wandsworth Town if you never leave the train there.
Platform 3 Closed Until 11 October
National Rail’s current engineering notice still describes the station layout for this phase: platform 3 is closed, and trains that do stop call at platform 4. Network Rail separately says the stairs to platform 4 have been closed since April 2026 so the second entrance can be built, with a temporary footbridge from platforms 2 and 3. Follow the yellow signs on the day. The diverted walk is about two minutes.
That split matters if you have luggage, a buggy, or limited mobility. Wandsworth Town is not step free yet. The whole point of the works is to add lifts to every platform. Until summer 2027 you are using stairs, a temporary bridge, and a station that was never designed as a fully accessible interchange. If you need level access, travel via a step-free SWR station such as Clapham Junction or Putney and use a bus or taxi for the last mile rather than forcing this stop.
The National Rail engineering-works page for Wandsworth Town still summarises the second phase as a Monday to Thursday skip towards Waterloo. That is the wording from the start of the July phase. The operator timetable that took effect on 20 September is narrower. Trust the timetable PDF and a live journey planner over a static incident summary when the two disagree, then allow extra minutes in case a train is retimed on the day.
Step-Free Lifts and Odyssey Way Come in 2027
Network Rail says Wandsworth Town will be fully step free, with lifts to all platforms, once the job finishes in summer 2027. A new second entrance at Odyssey Way will open from the north side of the station to serve housing growth on that flank. New lighting and CCTV will sit on and around the lifts. Those dates are construction milestones, not a reason to wait until 2027 to use the station. Trains keep calling every day except that Monday midday window through 5 October.
Barnes, Isleworth, Motspur Park, and Stoneleigh already received Access for All footbridges and lifts on the same Wessex programme. Wandsworth Town is the live site on this corridor. The disruption you feel in 2026 is the price of a station that currently has no lift route between street and platform. Treat the Monday skip as a temporary calling change, not as evidence the station is closed.
After 11 October the skip should end, but the temporary footbridge and platform 4 stair closure can continue until the Odyssey Way entrance is ready. Check South Western Railway’s journey planner the week of 12 October before you assume every midday Monday train is stopping again, because engineering end dates sometimes slip by a week when lift shafts or signalling need a final possession.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Travel towards Clapham Junction on a Monday between 11:00 and 14:00 through 5 October | Stay on to Clapham Junction, then take the next Putney-bound train back one stop. |
| Travel on Tuesday to Sunday, or outside 11:00 to 14:00 on Monday | Use Wandsworth Town as booked. Calling is unchanged in those hours. |
| Need step-free access today | Do not count on this station. Use Clapham Junction or Putney and finish by bus or taxi. |
| Are planning after 11 October 2026 | The skip should end, but confirm the live timetable; lift works continue into 2027. |
Monday 28 September and Monday 5 October are the remaining skip Mondays. If you must use Wandsworth Town in the 11:00 to 14:00 hour, build a Clapham Junction connection into the booking.
Sunday 11 October is the advertised end of this possession. After that date, recheck SWR before you restore a Monday midday habit.
Summer 2027 is the lift and Odyssey Way target. Do not wait for step-free access at this station in 2026.
Does every Monday train skip Wandsworth Town?
No. Only trains towards Clapham Junction between 11:00 and 14:00 on Mondays through 5 October 2026 skip the stop, according to the SWR autumn timetable.
Do trains skip Wandsworth Town on Tuesday to Thursday?
Not under the 20 September timetable. The operator narrowed the current phase to Mondays only. Check a live planner if a possession is added at short notice.
How do I get to Wandsworth Town if my train does not stop?
Continue to Clapham Junction and take the next service back towards Putney. That is the official diversion, not a rail-replacement bus.
When does the Wandsworth Town skip end?
The advertised works window ends on Sunday 11 October 2026. The last scheduled Monday skip inside that window is 5 October.
Is Wandsworth Town closed for the lift works?
No. The station stays open. Platform 3 is closed, some stairs are diverted, and one Monday midday calling pattern is suspended.
When will Wandsworth Town have lifts?
Network Rail is targeting summer 2027 for lifts to all platforms and a new Odyssey Way entrance on the north side of the station.
