Vy cancelled 163 train departures on Sunday, September 20, 2026, as a locomotive engineer strike that began Friday at 10 a.m. continued through eastern Norway and into a Bergen local line, the company said on its website as reported by NRK.
Travelers with tickets on RE10 Drammen to Lillehammer, Oslo to Gothenburg, or Oslo commuter lines should check the live list before leaving for the station, because Vy is not running replacement buses, taxis, or flights. If your trip still centers on the capital, start with our Oslo cruise-day planning guide so a cancelled train does not strand the rest of the day.
- Sunday cancellations: 163 Vy departures on September 20, per Vy as reported by NRK.
- Monday list: 141 departures cancelled on September 21, Vy communications chief Age-Christoffer Lundeby told NRK.
- Hardest line: RE10 Drammen to Lillehammer, with 31 Sunday trips cancelled and 67 percent of that line cut.
- Replacement transport: None. Vy will not add buses, taxis, or flights during the legal strike.
- Refunds: Cancelled-train refunds apply to all ticket types if you file the change yourself.
Sunday Cancellations Hit Eastern Norway First
NRK’s line list, updated Sunday afternoon from Vy, shows the heaviest Sunday cuts on L2 Stabekk to Ski (44 departures), RE10 Drammen to Lillehammer (31), R21 Stabekk to Moss (27), and L1 Spikkestad to Lillestrom (20). RE20 from Oslo Central to Halden and Gothenburg lost 10 Sunday trips. On the west coast, L4 Bergen to Arna lost 18 Sunday trips, a jump from two on Saturday.
News in English reported Saturday that nearly 400 departures were cancelled across the following three days, with Drammen through Oslo to Hamar and Lillehammer the worst hit. That independent count matches the Sunday-plus-Monday scale now on Vy’s public list. SJ Nord’s six daily Oslo to Lillehammer trains are not part of the strike.
Monday and Tuesday Lists Are Already Posted
Lundeby told NRK on Sunday morning that Monday’s strike-related cancellations total 141. The same NRK rundown, refreshed at 3:15 p.m. Sunday, lists Monday cuts on L1 Spikkestad to Lillestrom (39), RE10 Drammen to Lillehammer (33), RE20 Oslo to Halden and Gothenburg (14), R13 Drammen to Dal (13), and R14 Asker to Kongsvinger (12). West-coast Monday cuts include six L4 Bergen to Arna trips and seven R40 Bergen to Voss and Myrdal trips.
Tuesday’s posted list still concentrates on RE10 (31 cancellations) and adds 33 R23 Oslo Central to Ski trips, plus 15 on R13 Drammen to Dal and 13 on R21 Stabekk to Moss. NRK Innlandet copied Tuesday’s Innlandet rows from vy.no at 12:57 p.m. Sunday, so the Tuesday plan is already in the operator file even if later hours change a few trips. Recheck the operator list the night before you travel; Vy is updating it as the walkout continues.
Refunds on Cancelled Vy Tickets
Vy told NRK that a cancelled departure qualifies for a refund regardless of ticket type, but the passenger has to make the change. Flexible and refundable tickets can be moved to another departure or refunded in full. Standard nonrefundable tickets can be cancelled through Vy’s cancellation form for a refund. A period ticket can be cancelled at any time; it then stops from the cancellation date and the unused remainder is refunded.
A cancelled ticket can also be used on another Vy train the same day on the same stretch, except on Oslo to Bergen and on departures that require a seat reservation. That same-day reuse is the fastest fix when a later train on your corridor is still running. It does not create a bus, taxi, or flight voucher. If you already bought a separate airline or long-distance ticket to skip the strike, that purchase is on you unless your own card or insurance covers it.
Replacement Transport Is Not Coming
Vy will not insert buses for cancelled trains while locomotive engineers are on a legal strike, and it will not offer taxi or air alternatives. Lundeby told NRK the company is following the strike rules rather than trying to paper over the walkout. News in English independently reported the same bar on buses, taxis, and flights. Travelers who need to move on Sunday or Monday should plan around remaining Vy trips, SJ Nord on Oslo to Lillehammer, or a privately booked car, not a promised rail-replacement bus.
The walkout started after overnight talks at the National Mediator ended without a deal Friday morning. Norsk Lokomotivforerforbund, the locomotive engineers’ union, first pulled 46 members out. The union wants pay equal to Airport Express (Flytoget) staff after Vy took over that operation, plus more predictable schedules. Spekter, the employer side, said the union is striking for a pay result more than three times what other groups can expect this year. That dispute is why the list keeps growing by the day instead of ending after one weekend.
SJ Nord Still Serves Oslo to Lillehammer
RE10 is the strike’s pressure point: Lundeby said 67 percent of Drammen to Lillehammer trains are cancelled, and NRK Innlandet recorded 31 Sunday trips, 29 Monday trips, and 31 Tuesday trips off that line. If you only need Oslo to Lillehammer, SJ Nord’s six daily trains on that corridor are not in the Vy walkout. Buy or keep an SJ ticket rather than assuming a leftover Vy RE10 will appear at the platform.
Lundeby also said nearly 90 percent of Vy trains still run, so a planned trip is often possible if you pick a line that is not on the cancellation table. That is true on many corridors and false on RE10 this weekend. For a Norway trip that can shift off rail entirely, our Norway small-ship and fjord cruise guide is the next planning page if the strike has already broken a rail-and-port connection, not a substitute for today’s cancelled commuter trip.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Hold a Sunday RE10 Drammen to Lillehammer ticket | Treat the trip as likely cancelled (31 Sunday trips cut). Check Vy’s list, then look at SJ Nord’s six daily Oslo to Lillehammer trains. |
| Hold a standard nonrefundable Vy ticket on a cancelled train | Use Vy’s cancellation form for a refund, or ride another same-day Vy train on the same stretch if it does not require a seat reservation. |
| Need Oslo to Gothenburg this weekend | RE20 lost 10 Sunday trips and 14 Monday trips. Confirm the remaining departures before you go to Oslo Central. |
| Are on Bergen to Arna Sunday | L4 lost 18 Sunday trips. Do not wait for a rail-replacement bus; Vy is not providing one. |
| Hold a period ticket | You can cancel it from a chosen date and recover the unused remainder. Do that only if the strike has already broken your commuting window. |
Sunday, September 20 is the 163-cancellation day. Recheck your exact departure on Vy’s list before you leave for the station. There is no bus substitute.
Monday, September 21 is posted at 141 cancellations. L1, RE10, and RE20 carry the largest Monday cuts. Move or refund tonight if your train is already listed.
Tuesday, September 22 already has a line list. RE10 still shows 31 cuts and R23 Oslo to Ski shows 33. Treat Tuesday as a strike day until Vy says otherwise.
Are Vy trains running in Norway on September 20?
Yes, most of them. Vy says nearly 90 percent of its trains still run, but 163 Sunday departures are cancelled, concentrated in eastern Norway plus Bergen to Arna.
Does Vy run replacement buses during the locomotive engineer strike?
No. Vy told NRK it will not add buses, taxis, or flights while the legal strike is on. News in English reported the same bar.
Can I get a refund on a cancelled Vy ticket?
Yes, for a strike cancellation on any ticket type, if you file the change. Flexible tickets can be moved or refunded. Standard tickets use Vy’s cancellation form.
Is the Drammen to Lillehammer line running?
Partly. RE10 has 31 Sunday cancellations and 67 percent of that line cut. SJ Nord’s six daily Oslo to Lillehammer trains are not in the strike.
Does the strike stop SJ Nord trains?
No. NRK Innlandet states SJ departures are not affected. Use those six daily Oslo to Lillehammer trains if RE10 is cancelled.
When did the Vy locomotive engineer strike start?
Friday, September 18, 2026, at 10 a.m., after overnight mediation failed. The union first took out 46 locomotive engineers.
