Vietjet has signed an agreement with Starlink, the satellite internet service run by SpaceX, to install high-speed Wi-Fi on 120 of its aircraft and offer it free to all passengers. The deal covers 100 narrow-body jets and 20 Airbus A330s, and Vietjet says aircraft it receives in future will be fitted as well. The agreement was signed in New York on September 24 during a visit to the United States by Vietnam’s leader, To Lam.
For travelers, this is a promise rather than a service you can use today. Neither company has published an installation schedule, so there is no date yet for when the first Vietjet flight will offer Starlink Wi-Fi or how quickly the fleet will be covered. What is clear is the model: the service is described as free for everyone on board, on domestic and international flights, a notable promise from a low-cost airline.
Vietjet is the airline many visitors use to hop between Vietnamese cities, and our guide to things to do in Vietnam covers the destinations its domestic network links.
- Deal: Starlink Wi-Fi on 120 Vietjet aircraft.
- Fleet split: 100 narrow-body jets and 20 Airbus A330s.
- Price to passengers: free for all passengers, according to Vietjet.
- Timing: no installation schedule published yet.
- Signed: September 24, 2026, in New York.
The Starlink Deal Covers 120 Vietjet Aircraft
VietnamPlus, the Vietnam News Agency’s English-language service, reported that the initial phase covers 120 aircraft, made up of 100 Airbus A321 and Boeing 737 jets and 20 Airbus A330s, with future deliveries also to be equipped. It said passengers will get free high-speed Wi-Fi on domestic and international flights, with coverage extending over oceans and remote areas, and that the agreement was signed in New York in the presence of General Secretary and President To Lam.
Vietjet chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said that with Starlink, time in the air no longer has to mean time offline. Tim Hughes, a senior vice president at SpaceX, said the company was pleased to bring its connectivity to Vietjet and its customers.
Travel Daily News Asia-Pacific reported the same aircraft numbers and the free-for-all-passengers model, and said the service will expand across Vietjet’s domestic and international routes. Neither report gave a start date or said which routes will be fitted first.
Longer Vietjet Routes Stand to Gain Most
Starlink uses a network of low-orbit satellites, and airlines that already use it market it as fast enough for streaming and video calls. If Vietjet delivers the service as described, passengers on its longer flights, such as routes to Australia, India, Japan and South Korea, would gain the most. On short domestic hops, the benefit is mainly staying reachable for work or messages.
Free Wi-Fi could also change the calculation for travelers choosing between Vietjet and full-service rivals, once it is actually available on the aircraft you book. Check whether your competing airline charges for its own Wi-Fi before treating the two as equal. We have covered other Starlink rollouts, including Emirates’ first Starlink installation on an A380, which show that fitting a whole fleet takes time.
| If you are… | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Flying Vietjet this year | Do not count on Wi-Fi; no start date is published. |
| Booking a long Vietjet route for 2027 | Wi-Fi may arrive, but check before relying on it. |
| Needing to work in flight | Plan offline until Vietjet confirms fitted aircraft. |
| Comparing airlines | Treat free Wi-Fi as a future perk, not a current one. |
What Is Still Unknown
The reports we reviewed do not say when installation starts, how long it will take to fit 120 aircraft, whether all of Vietjet’s affiliated airlines are included, or whether any usage limits will apply. Until Vietjet names specific fitted aircraft or routes, assume your flight does not have Wi-Fi, download entertainment before you board and keep essential documents available offline.
The next signals to watch are Vietjet naming the first aircraft or routes fitted with Starlink, and confirming that the free-for-all model holds once service begins. Until then, the deal shows where the airline is heading, not what you will find on your next flight.
Planning Travel With Vietjet
Vietjet continues to add international routes, including its Ho Chi Minh City to Western Sydney flights from January 2027, which are exactly the kind of longer sectors where connectivity would matter most.
