United Airlines flight UA884 from Washington Dulles to Rome never left the ground on Friday, October 2, after passengers spent nearly 12 hours in the cabin and at the gate, according to Simple Flying. The overnight flight was cancelled at about 4:00 a.m. Saturday and passengers were moved to an extra flight that evening.
The decision for affected travelers is what to claim and when, because the airline offered a $175 voucher to at least one passenger while a federal refund rule points to cash. The same evening’s storm delays at the airport are covered in our Dulles October 2 delays report.
- Flight: United UA884, Washington Dulles to Rome Fiumicino, Boeing 777-200ER.
- Scheduled departure: 5:35 p.m. Eastern, Friday, October 2.
- Outcome: cancelled around 4:00 a.m. Saturday after crew duty limits were reached.
- Rebooking: extra flight UA3028 left just before 7:00 p.m. Saturday, more than 25 hours late.
- Compensation: a $175 goodwill voucher was reported by one passenger.
How the Delay Unfolded Hour by Hour
Passenger Rebecca Bliden told WJLA that boarding began around 4:30 p.m. and that a technical issue in the cockpit came first. Thunderstorms then reached Dulles while the aircraft waited, and about three hours later the plane returned to the gate to refuel.
At that point, she said, flight attendants let people leave the aircraft, and the catering was swapped because the meals had sat too long. About six hours in, the crew reached its duty limit and everyone left the plane to wait for a replacement crew.
After reboarding, passengers waited roughly an hour while maintenance checked a door that would not seal. The aircraft then pushed back, but passengers heard a bang when a band on the pushback tug broke, and the jet returned to the gate for another inspection.
United’s Explanation and the Crew Limit
In a statement to WJLA, United said the flight returned to the gate after taxiing to take on extra fuel for a longer planned flight because of weather. A new crew was brought in and a maintenance issue was resolved.
The airline said the aircraft then pushed back but needed another mechanical inspection, and the flight was cancelled because of crew time limits. United rebooked customers on an extra Saturday evening flight.
Simple Flying adds that the replacement crew also timed out after the tug incident used up more time. It reports that the same 28 year old aircraft was cleared after inspection and flew to Athens on Saturday as UA982.
Which Federal Rules Apply to a Delay Like This
Simple Flying notes that under the Department of Transportation tarmac delay rule, airlines must offer passengers on international departures the chance to deplane before a delay reaches four hours. That rule does not require any compensation.
The separate Department of Transportation refund rule, as Simple Flying describes it, entitles passengers to a full refund when a flight is cancelled and they decline the alternative travel offered. A voucher is therefore not the only remedy a traveler can ask for.
Katy Nastro of the flight tracking app Flighty told WJLA that travelers should find out whether the airline classifies a long delay as inside or outside its control. She pointed travelers to flightrights.gov to see what each airline has committed to in writing.
The Cancelled Return From Rome
Because UA884 never reached Italy, its return flight UA885 from Rome Fiumicino to Dulles on Saturday morning was cancelled too. Passengers booked on that leg should check their rebooking and refund options directly with United.
Simple Flying says that flight departed from a European Union airport, so passengers on it may qualify for compensation under the EU rule known as EC 261, worth up to about $675 (600 euros) per person. Whether United owes it depends on the cause United assigns to the cancellation.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Were on UA884 and flew UA3028 on Saturday | Keep boarding passes and receipts, then ask United in writing for expenses and a response beyond the $175 voucher. |
| Were on UA884 and did not travel | Ask for a full cash refund under the Department of Transportation refund rule instead of accepting a voucher. |
| Were booked on UA885 from Rome on Saturday | Request rebooking or a refund and ask whether EC 261 compensation applies. |
| Fly a long haul departure from Dulles soon | Check crew and weather updates in the United app and confirm your rebooking options before leaving for the airport. |
Saturday, October 3 was the rebooking day. Passengers who accepted the extra flight should keep proof of the times they actually departed and arrived.
The next few days are the claim window to use. A written request to United that cites the cancellation reason and the cost of the delay is easier to resolve while records are fresh.
Any later United statement on the incident is the next signal. The airline has so far described only crew limits and a mechanical inspection, not any compensation policy for this flight.
Why was United UA884 cancelled?
United said the flight was cancelled because of crew time limits after a mechanical inspection followed a pushback. Earlier problems included a cockpit fault, thunderstorms and a door that would not seal.
When did the replacement flight leave?
Simple Flying reports that extra flight UA3028 departed Dulles just before 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3. WJLA reported the rebooking as 6:30 p.m. that evening.
Is United required to pay cash compensation for the delay?
Simple Flying says the tarmac delay rule has no mandatory compensation, but a cancelled flight does carry a refund right. The $175 voucher was a goodwill gesture, according to the passenger.
Does the cancelled Rome return flight qualify for EC 261?
Simple Flying says it may, because UA885 was due to leave an EU airport. United has not said how it classifies the cancellation, so check the airline directly.
