United Airlines Starts Newark Terceira Flights June 9

United Airlines will start three-times-weekly nonstop flights between Newark Liberty International Airport and Lajes Airport on Terceira in Portugal’s Azores on June 9, 2027, according to The Portugal News report on the carrier’s summer 2027 expansion. The seasonal service is expected to run through September 5, 2027, on a Boeing 737 MAX 8. United says it will be the only U.S. airline with a nonstop to Terceira.

The useful next step is to treat June 9 as a bookable window, not a rumor. If you already fly United to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, this is a different island and a different airport. For lodging once you land, start with Where to Stay in the Azores, then decide whether Terceira or São Miguel is the base you actually want.

Newark Gets a Direct Path to Terceira

Newsday reported that Terceira is one of eight new Newark nonstops in United’s 2027 Europe package, with three-times-weekly flights starting June 9. Six of those Newark cities, including Terceira, currently have no other U.S. airline nonstop, according to the same report quoting United.

That matters because Terceira is not São Miguel. United already serves Ponta Delgada, plus Lisbon, Porto, and Faro, The Portugal News notes. A Terceira ticket skips the hop through Ponta Delgada or Lisbon that many U.S. visitors still use to reach the Central Group islands. For what the existing São Miguel gateway looks like on the ground, see Things to Do in Ponta Delgada.

The Azores Regional Government welcomed the route. Vice President Artur Lima called the Newark-Lajes link a recognition of Lajes Airport’s role and said better access could help lodging, restaurants, and transport on Terceira and neighboring Central Group islands, according to The Portugal News. That Central Group point is practical: Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, and Faial are easier to reach from Terceira than from São Miguel, so a Newark arrival can change which island you use as a first night.

Terceira is not starting from zero on the U.S. map. The Portugal News notes that in summer 2026 the island already had a Boston nonstop on Azores Airlines and a San Francisco seasonal on TAP. United’s Newark flight adds the New York market and a Star Alliance U.S. carrier, not the first ever American seat to Lajes.

If you are in New England, Boston may still be the shorter drive. If you are in the New York metro, Newark is the new option that did not exist on United metal. Keep both on a fare watch if your dates are flexible inside the June to early September window.

June 9 Is the Date That Changes Bookings

June 9, 2027, is the first listed departure. Three weekly frequencies on a 737 MAX 8 is a summer-season pattern, not a year-round shuttle. The Portugal News says the seasonal window is currently expected to run until September 5, 2027. That is roughly 13 weeks. If you need a winter or shoulder-season visit, this announcement does not create one.

Newsday lists Terceira alongside Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille, Luxembourg City, Ljubljana, Olbia, and Catania as Newark’s new 2027 Europe set. Those other cities have their own start dates, some in April and May. Do not assume every city in that package starts on June 9. Terceira’s date is June 9.

United’s wider 2027 map also includes Okinawa from San Francisco and Toulouse from Washington Dulles, per the same expansion coverage. Those are separate tickets. This story is the Newark-Terceira pair only.

Who This Route Is For

Newark is United’s main Atlantic gateway. If you already connect through EWR, a Terceira nonstop removes a Lisbon or Ponta Delgada change. If you live closer to Kennedy, Newsday’s door-to-door warning still applies: a nonstop from Newark can still lose time if the transfer to New Jersey is long. Price the full trip, not just the fare.

The island has a large diaspora in North America, which is why a New York-area nonstop is more than a beach add-on. It is also a tourism bet. Lima’s comments, as reported in Portugal, tie the flight to visitor spending and cargo for Azorean products. Travelers should still plan hotels and island hops as they would for any small-island arrival. Lajes is a dual-use field; confirm passenger terminal hours closer to departure. Three weekly flights also means a missed inbound can cost you days, not hours, so travel insurance and a flexible first hotel night matter more here than on a daily transatlantic.

For other United route news, keep using Deep Arrival’s airlines hub rather than treating every Newark add as the same story. Louisville, Charlottesville, and Chiapas are different streams with different dates.

What Is Not Settled Yet

United’s own newsroom page for the Aug. 25, 2026, release timed out on retrieval during this report, so the load-bearing dates here come from The Portugal News and Newsday, both of which cite the airline. Exact departure clock times, fares, and the weekday pattern should be confirmed on United.com when you book. Do not rely on a third-party schedule until the carrier’s booking engine shows the June 9, 2027, flight.

Aircraft type is reported as a Boeing 737 MAX 8. Cabin layout, bag rules, and whether Premium Plus is installed on that metal can change before summer 2027. Treat the airplane as a capacity signal: this is a narrowbody island run, not a widebody transatlantic.

The Portugal News says United will then have more Portuguese destinations than any other U.S. carrier. That comparison is about the network, not about a fare war. TAP and Azores Airlines still matter for Terceira from Boston and other gateways. United’s claim is that it will be the only U.S. airline with a Terceira nonstop, not the only airline on the island.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Want Terceira in summer 2027 Watch United.com for June 9, 2027, Newark-Lajes flights and treat September 5 as the likely last day of the season.
Already fly United to Ponta Delgada Do not reuse that ticket logic. Terceira is a different island; book TER, not PDL.
Live closer to Kennedy than Newark Compare total door-to-door time before you pay extra for the nonstop, as Newsday notes for Long Island trips.
Need a winter Azores trip This announcement does not add winter frequencies. Use existing Ponta Delgada or European connections.
Planning Impact

June 9, 2027, is the first listed Newark-Terceira departure. Put that date on the calendar before you lock hotels on Terceira.

September 5, 2027, is the reported season end. A late-August stay still fits; a mid-September stay may not.

Three weekly flights is the published frequency. Build island time around a three-day gap, not a daily shuttle, and hold a buffer night on Terceira before any onward ferry or island hop.
