United Adds Newark Flights From Knoxville and Northwest Arkansas

United Airlines is adding new nonstop flights to its Newark Liberty International Airport hub from Knoxville, Tennessee, and Northwest Arkansas beginning September 24, 2026. The same day route announcements create two distinct options: twice daily service from McGhee Tyson Airport and daily service from Northwest Arkansas National Airport.

Knoxville travelers can already shop the new flights, according to the airport, while XNA said its United inventory would appear Thursday evening. The routes add New York area access, but their wider value is a one stop path through Newark to United destinations beyond the Northeast.

Two United routes begin on the same September date

McGhee Tyson Airport said United will begin twice daily nonstop service to Newark on September 24. In its report based on the airport release, WVLT confirmed that tickets are available and that the new flights will supplement existing New York area service from East Tennessee.

Northwest Arkansas National Airport announced a daily nonstop on the same start date. Talk Business and Politics reported from XNA’s release that Newark will become the airport’s 28th nonstop destination, with inventory expected on United’s site Thursday evening.

The frequencies are not interchangeable. Twice daily Knoxville service may offer more useful outbound and return combinations, while the single daily XNA flight could make the exact departure time and connection bank more important to the booking decision.

Travelers can use United’s official search for Knoxville to Newark or Northwest Arkansas to Newark. The live result controls the actual time, aircraft, fare, and availability for a selected date.

Knoxville gains a more frequent Newark option

United’s twice daily plan gives East Tennessee travelers two chances each day to reach the Newark hub without a connection. That matters for travelers whose final destination is New York, but it can matter even more for an itinerary continuing on another United flight.

McGhee Tyson already has New York area service, including Delta flights to LaGuardia and limited Allegiant service to Newark, according to the airport release cited by WVLT. The new United service therefore adds frequency and network access rather than introducing the region’s first New York link.

A traveler headed to Manhattan should compare Newark and LaGuardia as complete door to door trips. Airport location, ground transportation, arrival time, fare, and the final neighborhood can matter more than the airline’s daily frequency on a short city visit.

A traveler connecting onward should make a different comparison. United can keep the new TYS flight and a Newark connection on one reservation, which gives the airline responsibility for reaccommodation when a covered delay disrupts the planned connection.

Northwest Arkansas adds a second New York area airport

XNA already offers service to LaGuardia, but the Newark route adds a different airport and a United hub. The airport release emphasized one stop access beyond Newark to destinations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and India, which is a more specific benefit than simply adding another New York map point.

The daily schedule means travelers should inspect both directions carefully. A useful outbound flight paired with a poor return time, or a long Newark connection in one direction, can change the value of the nonstop origin leg.

XNA said the flights would be posted Thursday evening, so an early search may not immediately show the new nonstop. Travelers should avoid treating an empty result as a cancellation until the promised inventory window has passed and should confirm the September 24 start date on the selected flight.

The airport also reported that June set a new monthly enplanement record. That context helps explain the network addition, but the booking decision still rests on United’s live schedule, total fare, and the quality of the Newark connection for the actual trip.

Newark works differently as a destination and a hub

For a New York area trip, travelers should compare the airport that best fits the final destination. Newark can work well for parts of New Jersey and Manhattan, while another airport may produce a shorter or simpler ground trip for a different borough, meeting site, or family address.

For an onward trip, the useful measure is the full itinerary rather than the first nonstop. Check the connection time, terminal path, arrival margin, and whether every segment appears on one United reservation before comparing it with an itinerary through Chicago, Denver, Houston, or Washington Dulles.
