Typhoon Saudel Cancels 150 Okinawa Flights as Naha Reopens

Typhoon Saudel has moved away from Okinawa, but the trip disruption is not over just because Naha Airport unlocked its terminal doors. About 150 flights to and from Okinawa were canceled as the storm crossed Japan’s southwestern islands, and travelers with August 26 or 27 plans still need to check their exact flight before heading to the airport.

Naha Airport says its domestic and international terminals opened normally at 6 a.m. Wednesday, August 26. That is a terminal update, not a promise that every flight is operating. The airport emphasizes that each airline makes its own weather decision and asks passengers to use carrier updates as the final word.

The practical question is simple: if the airport is open, can you travel normally? Not necessarily. An open building allows the recovery to begin, while canceled aircraft rotations, displaced crews and passengers from Tuesday can keep the schedule uneven after the strongest winds have passed.

What Typhoon Saudel changed in Okinawa

The Associated Press reported that Saudel was northwest of Okinoerabu Island late Wednesday morning with maximum winds of 144 kph, or 89 mph, as it moved west across the East China Sea. Two people suffered minor injuries, and more than 30,000 homes in Kagoshima Prefecture lost power.

More than 23 centimeters, or about nine inches, of rain fell in the Amami region over 24 hours. Japan’s weather agency expected additional rain in Amami and Okinawa through midday Thursday and issued a landslide warning for Amami.

Those details explain why recovery is not the same as an all-clear. The center of the typhoon may be moving away, but wet ground, residual wind and aircraft positioned away from their planned airports can continue to influence a flight schedule.

Naha’s announcement is encouraging because both terminals are operating. It also draws a firm line between the building and the planes: flight operations remain an airline decision. Travelers should read the airport notice as permission to check in only after the carrier confirms a usable flight, not as a reason to assume the original itinerary survived.

What JAL passengers need to know

Japan Airlines says many JAL Group domestic flights were canceled because of Saudel, affecting a large number of reservations. The airline suspended airport standby and departure-date upgrade services at Okinawa Naha for all of August 25 and 26.

That restriction matters even to people whose scheduled flight still shows as operating. Standby normally gives a traveler a path onto another departure, while a same-day upgrade can depend on airport availability. Neither should be treated as a recovery shortcut at Naha on Wednesday.

The traveler scenario to avoid is arriving at Naha because the terminal is open, then learning that the only realistic replacement leaves the next day. That adds transport, waiting and possibly lodging costs without improving the reservation.

This is also why screenshots age badly during a weather recovery. Refresh the reservation close to departure and again before leaving the hotel. If the airline issues a new boarding pass after a change, save it locally in case connectivity becomes unreliable.
