Turkish Airlines Expands Air China Codeshare Access Sept. 17

Turkish Airlines and Air China signed an expanded codeshare agreement on Sept. 17, 2026, at the opening of the 4th China Air Transport Association Aviation Conference and Exhibition in Beijing. Daily Sabah, citing a Turkish Airlines statement, said the deal now covers all direct flights between Türkiye and China, plus selected Chinese domestic flights beyond Beijing and selected international flights beyond Istanbul.

The traveler decision is whether to search a China or Africa itinerary as one ticket on the two Star Alliance carriers instead of buying separate tickets. Cabin product still depends on which airline operates each sector, so pair the new routing map with Deep Arrival’s Turkish Airlines business class review before you pay for a long-haul seat.

At a Glance
  • Signed: Sept. 17, 2026, in Beijing at the CATA aviation conference.
  • Core change: Codeshare now covers all direct Türkiye-China flights, not only Istanbul to Beijing.
  • Turkish passengers: Six extra mainland cities via Beijing: Shenzhen, Chongqing, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Qingdao.
  • Air China passengers: Ankara plus selected Africa and Latin America cities via Istanbul, sold on one ticket.
  • Next step: Search both sites and confirm the operating carrier on each coupon before you buy.

The Sept. 17 Signing Covers Every Direct Türkiye-China Flight

The two airlines launched a free-sale codeshare in June 2024 that covered Istanbul to Beijing only. The Sept. 17 expansion, according to the Turkish Airlines statement carried by Daily Sabah, lifts that limit so every direct mainline flight between Türkiye and China can carry both carriers’ codes.

Türkiye Today, citing THY’s Communications Directorate, reported the same scope: selected Chinese domestic flights connecting through Beijing, and selected international flights operating through Istanbul, sit inside the new agreement. Both outlets say connecting flights can be sold under a single ticket.

A codeshare is a marketing overlay, not a new airplane. Air China still flies the Beijing-to-Shenzhen sector. Turkish Airlines still flies Istanbul to Accra. What changed is the right to put the partner’s flight number on those sectors so a passenger can hold one reservation, one baggage plan, and one protected connection when the itinerary is built that way.

The carriers also said they plan to add newly launched direct routes between Türkiye and China to the codeshare as those routes come online. That is a future inventory promise, not a second network today. Treat only the named cities as the current booking list.

Six Mainland Cities Open Through Beijing for Turkish Passengers

Turkish Airlines passengers gain through-Beijing access to Shenzhen, Chongqing, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Qingdao. Those are Air China-operated domestic sectors that can now be ticketed with a Turkish marketing code, according to both the Daily Sabah and Türkiye Today accounts of the airline statement.

This is not the same story as Turkish Airlines’ own Chengdu launch. Deep Arrival already covered the November 11 Chengdu flights as a Turkish-operated route. Chengdu is metal you can buy as a Turkish flight. The six cities above are partner-operated add-ons behind Beijing, useful when you need a second Chinese city on the same ticket.

Search the city pair both ways. A Shenzhen traveler may see a Turkish flight number on an Air China domestic leg, or an Air China number on a Turkish long-haul into Istanbul. The fare rules, seat maps, and mileage credit follow the operating airline’s booking class more often than the logo on the e-ticket header.

If you are collecting Miles&Smiles, read the partner chart before you assume a cheap Air China domestic class will post elite miles. Codeshare accrual is class-based. The Sept. 17 announcement did not publish a new mileage table, so the existing partner rules still govern until the airline says otherwise.

Air China Travelers Gain Istanbul Onward Cities

Air China passengers gain Istanbul connections to Ankara and to selected Turkish Airlines destinations in Africa and Latin America. The named Africa list is Accra, Lagos, Marrakech, Dar es Salaam, Algiers, and Tunis. The named Latin America list is Cancun and Mexico City.

Those cities are already on the Turkish network. The change is that an Air China customer can, once inventory is loaded, continue through Istanbul on one ticket instead of self-connecting with two PNRs. That matters for checked bags, missed-connection protection, and visa timing on a same-day transfer.

A long layover in Istanbul is still a city night, not a sterile airside hop. Use Deep Arrival’s where to stay in Istanbul guide if the connection is long enough to leave the airport. A codeshare does not create a hotel, and it does not change Turkish transit-visa rules.

Do not mix this list with Turkish Airlines’ separate African route cuts. The Luanda cancellation and other 2026 Africa exits are a different stream. Accra, Lagos, Marrakech, Dar es Salaam, Algiers, and Tunis are the cities named on this codeshare expansion, not a promise that every African city remains on sale.

Single-Ticket Search Still Needs a Marketing-Carrier Check

Sign today, shop tomorrow, and still read the coupon. A codeshare signing is not the same as every city pair appearing in every GDS or on both airline apps on the same afternoon. If a named city does not price as a through-ticket yet, wait rather than buying two separate tickets that look cheaper until a delay hits Beijing or Istanbul.

Confirm three lines on the itinerary before you pay: the operating carrier on each flight, the connection time at Beijing Capital or Istanbul Airport, and whether baggage is through-checked. A 70-minute legal connection on paper can still be a terminal change. The Sept. 17 notice did not publish minimum connection times.

Premium-cabin shoppers should price the long-haul on the airline they actually want to sit on. Deep Arrival’s Turkish Airlines 777 business class guide is the product page for Turkish-operated widebodies. An Air China-operated Beijing domestic sector will not match that seat, even if the ticket says TK.

Keep a screenshot of the named city list with the Sept. 17 date. If a travel agent offers a codeshare to a Chinese or African city that is not on this list, ask whether it is a later add-on the airlines have not announced, or a different partner. This story’s inventory is the six Chinese cities, Ankara, and the eight named beyond-Istanbul cities.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Need Shenzhen, Chongqing, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, or Qingdao behind Beijing Search a Turkish Airlines ticket that includes the Air China domestic sector, then confirm the operating carrier before you buy.
Are on Air China into Istanbul and need Accra, Lagos, Marrakech, Dar es Salaam, Algiers, Tunis, Cancun, or Mexico City Ask for a single-ticket codeshare instead of a self-transfer, and check the Istanbul connection time.
Only need Istanbul to Beijing or another direct Türkiye-China flight The June 2024 core is now part of a wider deal covering all direct flights. Reprice the same dates as a codeshare through-fare.
Want Chengdu on Turkish metal in November That is a separate Turkish-operated route, not this Air China domestic add-on. Book it as a Turkish flight.
Planning Impact

Sept. 17 is the inventory gate. The expanded codeshare is signed. Search both airlines for the named cities as one ticket, and do not assume every city is loaded the same day.

Operating carrier is the product gate. Cabin, bags, and miles follow the airline that flies the sector, not the marketing code on the e-ticket.

New Türkiye-China routes are a later gate. The airlines said they will add future direct routes to the codeshare. Wait for a named start date before you plan around an unlisted city.
