TSA PreCheck is one programme with one benefit and three prices. Which one you pay depends entirely on which company’s website you happen to land on.
TSA lists three authorised enrollment providers, and their published prices for the same five years of membership are not the same: Telos at 76.75 dollars, IDEMIA at 85 dollars, and CLEAR bundling PreCheck free with a CLEAR Plus membership. TSA’s own summary phrases it carefully, as five years of benefits for 85 dollars or less.
- Telos: 76.75 dollars for five years.
- IDEMIA: 85 dollars for the identical membership.
- CLEAR: PreCheck included with a CLEAR Plus membership.
- Same benefit either way: the provider does the enrollment, not the screening.
The Spread Buys You Nothing Different
This is the part worth being clear about. The provider takes your application, checks your documents, captures fingerprints and a photo, and collects payment. What you get afterwards is a Known Traveler Number issued against the same programme, honoured in the same lanes.
Eight dollars and twenty five cents is not a fortune, but it is a pure price difference on an identical product, and it is invisible unless you compare the three sites before starting. Most people do not, because the enrollment link they follow decides it for them.
Where the Providers Actually Differ
Coverage is the real variable. Between them the three providers run more than 1,300 enrollment locations, and CLEAR alone lists over 514 centres with pop up events running daily.
So the calculation is not purely price. A provider that is 8 dollars cheaper but 40 miles further away is not cheaper once you have driven there, and appointment availability in the weeks before a trip varies by provider and by city.
The CLEAR Bundle Is a Different Product
CLEAR Plus is a paid membership in its own right, and PreCheck coming free with it is a bundle rather than a discount. It only reads as free if you already wanted CLEAR Plus.
Treat it as two questions rather than one. If CLEAR Plus earns its keep on your routes, the PreCheck inclusion is genuine value on top. If it does not, Telos at 76.75 dollars is the cheapest way to hold PreCheck alone.
What the Membership Is Worth
TSA puts about 99 percent of PreCheck passengers through security in under 10 minutes, and the lane lets you keep electronics and 3-1-1 liquids in the bag and belts, light jackets and shoes on. Over five years that is the case for the fee.
Children 17 and under can use the lane free alongside an enrolled adult, which quietly changes the family maths: one membership can cover a whole trip rather than one traveller. For how PreCheck compares with the programme that also speeds your return to the country, our Global Entry versus TSA PreCheck comparison is the decision behind this one.
Getting Enrolled Without Wasting a Trip
Apply online first, which TSA puts at about five minutes, then book the in person appointment, which runs about ten. Walk in is possible at many locations but an appointment is the version that does not cost you an afternoon.
The step people forget is the last one. A Known Traveler Number does nothing sitting in an email: it has to be entered in each airline reservation and saved to your travel profiles before it prints on a boarding pass. Our guide to which documents clear a domestic checkpoint covers what you still need to carry alongside it.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Want PreCheck alone, cheapest | Telos, at 76.75 dollars for five years. |
| Already want CLEAR Plus | The CLEAR bundle includes PreCheck, so compare total cost rather than headline price. |
| Live far from an enrollment centre | Check locations before price. A cheaper provider 40 miles away is not cheaper. |
| Are travelling with children | Under 18s use the lane free with an enrolled adult. One membership may be enough. |
| Have already enrolled | Put the Known Traveler Number in every reservation and profile, or it does nothing. |
One programme, three prices. 76.75 to 85 dollars for an identical five year membership.
Location can outweigh price. Over 1,300 enrollment sites, unevenly distributed.
Children ride free. Under 18s join an enrolled adult in the lane at no cost.
