Tri-Rail trips across South Florida will cost more from October 1, 2026. The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority’s September 23 announcement confirms a 10% increase on applicable fare products, including one-way fares and passes.

The change matters for visitors using the regional railway between Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, including airport connections. If you are comparing arrival gateways, our Miami airport comparison provides broader location context; the rail fare still needs to be checked for your particular journey.

At a Glance
  • Effective date: October 1, 2026.
  • Increase: 10% on applicable Tri-Rail fare products.
  • Coverage: One-way fares and passes are included in the announcement.
  • Discounts: Eligible passengers retain access to discounted fares under the operator’s policies.
  • Before boarding: Check the price of your exact ticket, rather than applying a percentage to an old online fare.

October 1 Is the Fare Change, Not a Service Closure

The governing board approved the adjustment following a June 26 public hearing. The September notice now supplies the date passengers need for their budgets. It does not announce a train cancellation, station closure or replacement-bus operation.

WPTV’s September 23 reporting independently confirms the increase and places it against Tri-Rail’s funding pressures. That background is not a reason to treat October 1 as the end of rail service: a funding concern and an announced passenger-service change are different facts.

For a trip spanning September and October, distinguish the dates of individual journeys. The operator’s announcement establishes the fare-change date, but does not promise that buying an older product beforehand will lock in the previous price for later travel. Check the applicable ticket conditions before trying to buy ahead.

Check the Ticket Price for Your Zones

Tri-Rail’s fare-information page describes a six-zone system for weekday journeys. Your origin counts as the first zone, with the destination and intervening zones determining the fare. A short ride and a trip crossing the region therefore do not share one universal ticket price.

The standing page also distinguishes weekend and holiday day products, 12-trip products and calendar-month passes. The September announcement does not provide a complete, dated October replacement table. We are consequently not presenting percentage calculations from the standing table as verified new prices, including rounded discounted amounts.

A full-fare ticket and a discount ticket can have different eligibility requirements as well as different prices. Select the correct product in the ticket vending machine or official mobile ticketing system, and check the amount shown before payment. For an unclear October product, the operator directs passengers to its website or customer service at 1-800-874-7245.

Decision Matrix
Your Trip The Check That Matters
A weekday single journey Use the actual origin and destination to identify the correct zone-based ticket.
Weekend sightseeing Check the weekend or holiday product, rather than copying a weekday fare.
A longer stay with repeated rides Compare the actual dated pass price and validity with the journeys you will take.
A reduced-fare journey Complete eligibility requirements before relying on the discount.
An airport transfer Budget the rail fare and plan the airport connection separately.

Discount Eligibility Still Requires Preparation

The increase does not abolish reduced fares. However, Tri-Rail’s discount policy requires passengers to prequalify, with discounted products available through a Discount EASY Card or an approved SoFloGO account.

The standing policy includes eligible seniors aged 65 or older, people with disabilities, children and qualifying students. Student eligibility includes specific South Florida school or residency requirements; being a student elsewhere is not enough to assume the same entitlement. The 50% discount categories exclude 12-trip passes.

Children under five ride free under the published policy. Children aged five through 12 need an accompanying adult to obtain the applicable Discount EASY Card at a ticket kiosk. Those details can change a family’s ticket purchase more than the headline percentage, so establish eligibility before arriving for a train.

Airport Connections Are a Separate Planning Step

Tri-Rail’s airport connection information identifies different links at the region’s three major airports. At Miami Airport Station, passengers connect to the terminal using the MIA Mover; the rail station is not simply the airline check-in hall.

At Fort Lauderdale Airport Station, a complimentary shuttle connects Tri-Rail passengers with FLL during train operating hours. Palm Beach International uses Palm Tran Route 2 from West Palm Beach Station, with the operator specifying proof-of-fare conditions for the airport-bound connection.

Do not extend the rail increase to every connecting transport service. The notice concerns Tri-Rail fare products, not a blanket increase across South Florida buses, Metrorail or airport services. The operator’s transfer rules also distinguish fare media and direction of travel, so a valid rail ticket is not universal permission to board another system free.

Planning Impact

October 1 is the budgeting trigger. Recheck the actual fare for travel on or after that date, including any pass you intend to use.

Eligibility comes before a discount purchase. Prepare the required documents and approved fare media rather than assuming the ticket machine will verify them.

The station is the final boarding check. Tri-Rail requires a valid ticket or fare product before boarding; its standing guidance recommends arriving 20 minutes before departure.
