Do Transport for Wales Trains Leave Earlier From Oct. 10?

ShareEmailWhatsAppLinkedInXFacebook
Transport for Wales Class 197 train at Blaenau Ffestiniog station on the Conwy Valley line with misty hills behind

Transport for Wales will run a temporary autumn timetable from Saturday, October 10, to Friday, December 4, 2026, with some trains leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. The operator says the retimings give drivers extra room to brake and accelerate when wet leaves coat the rails.

Most of the changes are one to three minutes, but two are bigger: a late weekday train from Cardiff Central to Maesteg stops running, and most Wrexham to Liverpool services will start and finish at Wrexham General. If you commute or connect between Welsh lines, the Cardiff to Bridgend weekend closures are the other autumn change to check before you book.

At a Glance
  • Dates: Saturday, October 10, to Friday, December 4, 2026, per Transport for Wales.
  • Cause: leaves on the line reduce traction, so trains need more time to stop and start.
  • Biggest cut: the 23:16 Cardiff Central to Maesteg does not run Monday to Friday.
  • Wrexham line: most trains start and end at Wrexham General, with no rail replacement bus to Wrexham Central.
  • Refunds: tickets for affected trains can be used on other Transport for Wales services or refunded.

Cardiff to Maesteg: Earlier Departures and a Missing Late Train

On the Maesteg line, most services leave Cardiff Central one to two minutes earlier than before. That is small, but it matters if you usually arrive on the platform as the train is about to go.

The 23:16 Cardiff Central to Maesteg is the one real loss. Transport for Wales says it will not run from Monday to Friday so the Railhead Treatment Train, which cleans the rails, can use the line. The operator advises taking the 23:20 Cardiff Central to Carmarthen service to Bridgend, where a rail replacement bus will carry passengers on to Maesteg.

Wrexham to Liverpool Services Will Turn Back at Wrexham General

On the Wrexham to Bidston line, the majority of services will start and terminate at Wrexham General. Transport for Wales says no rail replacement service will run between Wrexham General and Wrexham Central, so anyone heading for the Central station needs a different way to cover that short gap.

Journeys on this route will be retimed by roughly one to three minutes. The operator says connections are preserved at Shotton.

Conwy Valley and Marches Timings Shift Slightly

On the Conwy Valley line between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog, journeys will take two to three minutes longer, and trains will leave Blaenau Ffestiniog slightly earlier. Visitors who time a hike or a day out around the last departure should leave a little more margin.

Services between Shrewsbury and Newport on the Marches line get minor retiming. So do routes from Shrewsbury to Birmingham, where some trains between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton leave slightly earlier, and from Shrewsbury to Chester and Crewe.

How Leaf-Fall Timetables Work Across Britain

Transport for Wales is not alone. National Rail’s autumn 2026 leaf-fall page explains that heavy leaf-fall bakes into a thin, slippery layer under train wheels, much like black ice on a road. It lists which operators publish special timetables and which make no change.

Other operators have their own versions, including Chiltern’s earlier-departing trains towards London. A Welsh timetable change does not mean the same change applies to a connecting English operator, so check each leg of a cross-border trip.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Take the last train from Cardiff to Maesteg on weekdays Use the 23:20 to Carmarthen as far as Bridgend, then the rail replacement bus, from October 10.
Travel between Wrexham and Liverpool Plan to start or end at Wrexham General and allow for the missing link to Wrexham Central.
Catch a Conwy Valley train back from Blaenau Ffestiniog Arrive a few minutes early, as trains leave slightly earlier and run two to three minutes longer.
Hold a ticket for a changed train Use it on another Transport for Wales service or request a refund on the operator’s refunds page.
Planning Impact

October 10 is the first day. Re-check any journey you booked from this date, because departure times can differ from the ones you saw earlier.

December 4 is the last day of the temporary timetable. Transport for Wales has not published a different end date, so trips after that day should return to normal timings.

Every trip needs a fresh look. The operator says to enter your journey for a date from October 10 in its journey planner or rail app rather than rely on printed times.
