Sunset Crater Road Closure Cuts Off Two Campgrounds

Sunset Crater volcanic slopes and lava landscape near Flagstaff

Sunset Crater visitors face a changed approach road and two campground closures later this month, but the Arizona monument itself will remain open. The National Park Service says a section of Forest Road 545 will close to all vehicle traffic from September 21 through October 21, 2026, while Recreation.gov lists September 20 closures for Bonito Campground and O’Leary Group Site.

The distinction matters for fall trips: a day visit can still work with a different route, while an overnight camping plan needs a separate replacement. Start with the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument guide, then apply the dated access restrictions before setting the day’s driving order.

At a Glance
  • Camping deadline: Bonito and O’Leary list closures on Sunday, September 20.
  • Roadwork window: The affected Forest Road 545 segment closes September 21 through October 21.
  • Still open: Sunset Crater’s visitor center and trails remain accessible through Wupatki.
  • RV warning: The unpaved Forest Road 776 detour is unsuitable for RVs and trailers.
  • Expected road reopening: October 22, subject to the project’s actual completion.

The Monument Stays Open During the Roadwork

The National Park Service road closure notice, issued August 24, describes culvert installation intended to address drainage and flooding after the Tunnel Fire. The closed road segment extends to the monument entrance kiosk near Bonito Campground.

This is not an announcement that the visitor center, trails or the whole scenic road system will shut down. NPS specifically directs visitors to approach Sunset Crater along Forest Road 545 through Wupatki National Monument during the work.

For a day trip, the practical change is the route into and out of the monument. Do not build an itinerary that depends on driving through the closed section simply because the destination itself still appears open in a map or trip planner.

Save the current closure notice with your route before departure, and follow posted road restrictions when you arrive. If an automatic route tries to send you toward the work area, the fact that it calculates a shorter journey does not establish that the road is available.

Bonito and O’Leary Close One Day Earlier

Bonito Campground’s Recreation.gov alert says the campground closes Sunday, September 20, ahead of work beginning Monday. The listing also identifies this as an early seasonal closure, so visitors should not assume the campground returns when road construction ends.

Bonito normally has 44 individual campsites, with 22 reservable and 22 available on a first come basis. That usual mix does not provide a workaround after closure: an unreserved campsite is still part of the closed campground, not an alternative arrival option.

The separate O’Leary Group Site alert gives the same September 20 closure date. Its three group camping areas ordinarily accommodate up to 50 people in each of the east and north loops and up to 75 in the west loop.

Group organizers should therefore check the overnight booking before distributing a final meeting point or shared driving plan. Replacing a group site may require different capacity and vehicle arrangements from finding one ordinary campsite for a couple.

If a reservation overlaps the closure, review its status with the booking provider before making a voluntary cancellation. These notices establish the closure dates, but they do not establish the handling of every individual reservation or promise a particular refund outcome.

RVs Need the Correct Approach, Not the Shortest Detour

NPS describes Forest Road 776 as an unpaved detour and recommends high clearance vehicles for it. More importantly for camping travelers, the notice explicitly says that this route is not suitable for RVs or trailers.

That warning should be treated as a vehicle suitability constraint, not merely a prediction that the drive will be slower. A traveler towing a trailer should not choose the unpaved option simply because a navigation app displays fewer miles.

Instead, plan the monument approach through Wupatki and verify the complete route for your vehicle before leaving the main road network. If you have a rental vehicle, check its road restrictions too; a route being mentioned in a park notice does not override your rental agreement.

Travelers replacing a camping stay can compare the Flagstaff RV park and campground options against their actual vehicle and service needs. Treat that as a starting list for checking current availability, not evidence that a particular replacement site is open or has space.

Bonito’s normal facilities include drinking water and flush toilets but no utility hookups. O’Leary also prohibits RV hookups, despite listing electricity for small appliances, so compare replacement facilities explicitly rather than assuming the original booking included full RV services.

The 30 Minute Figure Is Not a Universal Delay

The NPS notice puts the drive between the Wupatki and Sunset Crater visitor centers at about 19 miles and 30 minutes. That is a distance and time between two named points, not a blanket statement that every visitor’s trip will be exactly half an hour longer.

Your revised travel time depends on the starting location, the direction of approach and the stops included in the day. Someone combining both monuments has a different route calculation from someone making a single visit and returning directly to accommodation.

Our planning recommendation is to redraw the whole day’s route before adding a fixed buffer. Include the drive out as well as the drive in, then compare the result with visitor center hours, planned walks and the next fixed reservation.

If the revised route leaves too little time, reduce the number of stops rather than relying on an unavailable exit to recover the schedule. A road closure is a good reason to simplify the day; it is not, by itself, a reason to cancel an otherwise workable monument visit.

October 22 Applies to the Road, Not Every Facility

The road is expected to reopen October 22 after the September 21 to October 21 work window. Travelers arriving around that transition should check the park’s current notice before treating the usual approach as restored.

Keep the road and campground questions separate when checking an autumn booking. Completion of a construction project would not automatically reverse Bonito’s early seasonal closure or establish that O’Leary has resumed accepting overnight guests.

Before committing to a replacement stay, confirm its own operating dates and arrival instructions with the operator. This is especially important when changing a group booking or towing a trailer, where a last minute alternative may need more than a spare tent space.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Visit the monument during roadwork Plan access through Wupatki and remove the closed segment from the route.
Camp at Bonito or O’Leary Check the September 20 closure against the actual reservation dates.
Drive an RV or tow a trailer Do not use Forest Road 776 as the replacement approach.
Arrive around October 22 Verify the road reopening and campground status separately.
Planning Impact

September 20 is the camping cutoff. Resolve an overlapping overnight booking before traveling to either campground.

September 21 changes the drive. Use the current access plan, including the RV restriction, throughout the construction period.

October 22 is a verification point. Check completion rather than assuming every facility reopens together.

Frequently Asked

Is Sunset Crater closing for a month?

No. NPS says the monument, visitor center and trails remain open, with access through Wupatki while the affected road segment is closed.

Can I arrive without a Bonito reservation after September 20?

The campground closure applies regardless of whether a site is normally reservable or first come. Look for an operating alternative rather than relying on Bonito’s usual unreserved sites.

Can a trailer use Forest Road 776?

NPS says the unpaved detour is unsuitable for trailers and RVs. Plan the alternative monument approach through Wupatki instead.

Will the road closure add exactly 30 minutes?

Not necessarily. The published estimate describes the drive between the two visitor centers; calculate your full revised route from your own starting point.
