Sun Valley lists Stars Over Sun Valley for Wednesday, August 12, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the Roundhouse deck on Bald Mountain. Guests were supposed to ride the Roundhouse Express Gondola, take a complimentary drink, eat light bites, and look at Perseids with professional astronomers and telescopes.
The same page now repeats, twice, that the event is sold out. Registration is required. The contact line is 208-622-2135 or [email protected]. That is a confirmation channel, not a second box office.
Earlier recaps priced the night at $125 a person and bundled gondola access, food, and astronomy. Those details describe the product that sold out. They are not a current offer.
If you already have a ticket, go to the gondola, not the village parking lot, and bring a layer. Roundhouse sits at mid-mountain. August nights in the Wood River Valley drop fast after twilight.
If you do not have a ticket, skip the gondola line. A sold-out astronomy night does not become a public deck at 8:55 p.m.
Why Sun Valley is talking about the night sky now
DarkSky International said in July that Sun Valley Resort is the first U.S. property certified through the DarkSky Approved Lodging and Resorts Program. The cert covers outdoor lighting, habitat protection, and public education, not a single party.
Pete Sonntag, then quoted as Sun Valley’s chief operating officer in the resort’s own materials and as CEO in the DarkSky note, said the outdoors is the center of the guest experience and that protecting the night sky is part of protecting the place. James Brigagliano of DarkSky called it the first certified DarkSky resort in North America.
That July recognition is why tonight’s sold-out event exists. It is not a reason to invent a second ticket window. Future astronomy nights are listed only as plans on the DarkSky page and the resort calendar.
The Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, designated in 2017, is the larger geography around Ketchum and Sun Valley. The resort cert is a lighting-and-hospitality badge inside that reserve. You do not need the $125 party to stand in the reserve.

Where to look if the Roundhouse is closed to you
DarkSky’s own Sun Valley note lists the same viewing family the resort has been promoting. Bald Mountain’s Roundhouse is the marquee deck, and that one is sold out tonight.
Dollar Mountain Lodge is the easier in-town alternative. DarkSky describes wide-open skies and a low ambient-light footprint for naked-eye viewing. You do not need a telescope reservation to stand there.
Trail Creek, east of Sun Valley, is the meadow option. DarkSky calls it a classic open view with little surrounding light. Bring a headlamp with a red mode so you do not wreck your night vision or someone else’s.
Inside the village, DarkSky says resort-wide lighting compliance makes the Pavilion Lawn, the Whitecloud Trail System, and the Hemingway Memorial usable. Those are not wilderness. They are darker than a typical resort core.
Galena Summit, about 30 miles north on Highway 75, is the darkest drive-to spot DarkSky names. It is a highway pullout in the reserve, not a hotel terrace. Check weather and a full tank before you leave Ketchum after dinner.
How to watch Perseids without the ticket
The Perseids are the reason Sun Valley timed the party for August 12. You can still see meteors from Dollar Mountain or Trail Creek if the sky is clear. Lie back, give your eyes 20 minutes, and face away from valley lights.
Do not use high-beam headlights at a pullout. Do not set up a chair in a travel lane on Highway 75. Galena Summit is popular on peak nights. If the shoulder is full, keep driving to the next safe turnout.
The paid event included telescopes and a guided talk. A free night does not. A phone sky app and a blanket are enough for Perseids. Planets and galaxies were the telescope extra, not the meteor show.
If smoke from a regional fire sits in the valley, the deck party would have suffered too. Check a visible-satellite loop or the resort’s own weather note before you drive 30 miles for Galena.
Dress for 7,000 feet, not for a Boise evening. Wind at Roundhouse and Galena is the usual surprise, even in August.
Parking is the other failure mode. Dollar Mountain and Trail Creek have finite lots. If those lots are full, do not invent a space on a bike path or a private drive. Turn around and use a village lawn that DarkSky already listed as compliant.
The gondola is the access for ticket holders only tonight. A scenic daytime gondola ride is a different product on a different clock. Do not argue with lift staff that DarkSky certification makes the Roundhouse public after 9 p.m.
If you are staying in Ketchum and only want meteors, you can skip the mountain entirely. Walk to a dark edge of town, sit still, and look up. The sold-out ticket bought a guided deck, not exclusive rights to the Perseids.
