Sun PhuQuoc Airways Starts Phu Quoc to Chengdu Flights

Sun PhuQuoc Airways begins nonstop flights between Phu Quoc and Chengdu on July 16, opening the first scheduled direct link between the Vietnamese resort island and the western Chinese city. The new service gives travelers a three day weekly alternative to connections through Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or another regional hub.

Flight 9G610 leaves Phu Quoc in the afternoon and reaches Chengdu Tianfu the same evening, while the return operates overnight into Phu Quoc. The airline is using an Airbus A320neo and has placed the route on sale as it expands its international network around its island base.

The July 16 flight creates a new direct island link

The route launch was announced through a current Sun PhuQuoc Airways release carried by Vietnam News. It identifies the service as the first scheduled nonstop connection between Phu Quoc International Airport and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport.

That direct status is the main passenger benefit. A traveler can now move between the two destinations on one flight rather than changing planes at a mainland Vietnamese airport or another Asian hub, reducing both elapsed time and the number of operational handoffs.

The service is also distinct from the airline’s Ho Chi Minh City to Chengdu route, which is scheduled to begin August 12. Travelers should match the origin carefully because the Phu Quoc flight uses number 9G610 and the later Ho Chi Minh City service uses a different schedule.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways is building international access around Phu Quoc rather than treating the island only as the end of a domestic trip. The Chengdu service follows other international growth and gives the carrier a direct path into a large western China market.

Three weekly flights require date flexibility

Independent schedule specialist AeroRoutes lists the service on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday with an Airbus A320neo. That pattern can work well for a short island stay, but it gives passengers fewer recovery choices than a daily route if a flight changes.

The outbound leaves Phu Quoc at 4:25 p.m. and arrives at Chengdu Tianfu at 9:05 p.m., using local times. Chengdu is one hour ahead of Phu Quoc, so the scheduled elapsed time is about three hours and 40 minutes rather than the four hours and 40 minutes suggested by the clocks alone.

The return leaves Chengdu at 10:05 p.m. and lands in Phu Quoc at 12:50 a.m. the following day. That overnight arrival can preserve most of the departure day in Chengdu, but it also means a passenger needs lodging, transfer and check in plans that work after midnight.

A three day weekly pattern makes separate ticket connections riskier. Travelers connecting onward should leave a substantial buffer or use a protected single itinerary whenever available, especially because the next nonstop on the same route may be two or three days later.

Chengdu Tianfu is the airport on the ticket

The new service uses Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, code TFU, rather than Chengdu Shuangliu, code CTU. The distinction affects ground transport, hotel selection and any onward flight, so passengers should not rely on the city name alone when arranging a connection.

Tianfu sits well outside central Chengdu and is connected by metro, rail and road options. A late evening arrival leaves less margin for a same night transfer, making it important to confirm the last practical public transport and hotel check in time before travel.

At the other end, Phu Quoc International Airport uses code PQC and serves the island rather than mainland Vietnam. International passengers remain responsible for the entry, passport and visa rules that apply to their nationality and itinerary even when the flight itself is nonstop.

The direct flight removes a connection but does not remove border processing. Travelers should arrive with enough time for airline check in, document inspection, security and outbound or inbound immigration at the relevant airport.

The aircraft and fare bundle shape the onboard decision

Sun PhuQuoc Airways schedules the route with an Airbus A320neo, a narrow body aircraft used on regional international sectors. The exact seat, meal, change and baggage inclusions depend on the fare selected rather than the aircraft type alone.

The airline promoted a launch discount of up to 20 percent for eligible bookings through July 26, subject to its terms and inventory. It also paired some launch fares with Sun World benefits, but customers should verify the live checkout because a promotional headline does not guarantee that every date or fare qualifies.

Baggage is another place where the selected product matters. Before paying, passengers can compare the airline’s displayed allowance with Deep Arrival’s airline carry on size chart, then save the final itinerary and receipt that show the exact cabin and checked baggage included.

A lower headline fare can become less competitive after bags, seats, meals or changes are added. The clean comparison is the final trip total for the same travel dates and flexibility, not the first one way price shown in a search result.

The nonstop is strongest for point to point travel

The clearest use case is a traveler starting on Phu Quoc or in Chengdu who wants to visit the other destination without a connection. The schedule also supports a multi city Southeast Asia trip when the passenger can align the island stay with the three operating days.

It is less straightforward for travelers feeding into Phu Quoc from another city on a separate ticket. A delay on the first flight can cause a missed connection without automatic protection, and the limited weekly frequency can make a replacement expensive or slow.

The same consideration applies in Chengdu. Anyone continuing on a separate domestic or international ticket should account for immigration, baggage collection, terminal movement and the airport named on the onward reservation.

Because this is a new international route, schedules can still be adjusted after launch. Rechecking the itinerary, operating day and airport code several days before departure is a sensible step even when the original booking remains visible in an email.
