Stockholm Berlin Night Train Drops to Three Days a Week

Sweden’s public subsidy for the Stockholm to Berlin night train ended on August 31, 2026, and the service did not vanish with it. RDC Deutschland said it took over the RDC EuroNight as the responsible railway undertaking from September 1, running the 1,500 kilometer corridor commercially three times a week instead of daily.

The traveler job is now to pick an operator and a night. SJ no longer sells EuroNight tickets for travel from September 1. Book RDC at nachtexpress.de or nattexpressen.se, or use Snälltåget if you need more days of the week. If Berlin is the arrival, plan the next morning around Deep Arrival’s Stockholm day guide in the other direction, or a Berlin walk from Hauptbahnhof.

At a Glance
  • Subsidy end: Trafikverket’s contract with SJ expired August 31, 2026, after about SKr79 million a year in Swedish-leg support.
  • New operator: RDC EuroNight runs Stockholm, Hamburg, and Berlin from September 1, 2026, three times weekly year-round.
  • Tickets: Buy at nachtexpress.de or nattexpressen.se. SJ says it cannot sell EuroNight tickets from September 1.
  • RDC times: Stockholm departs 17:29 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Berlin departs 18:39 on Mondays and Fridays.
  • Snälltåget: Six weekly Stockholm to Berlin trains until October 30, 2026, except Saturdays, then four a week from November 2 to December 11.

RDC Takes Over After the Swedish Subsidy Ends

Railway Gazette reported on September 4 that SJ’s state-backed EuroNight ran for the last time under its public service obligation on August 31. EU rules block subsidies for an entire cross-border journey, so the Trafikverket contract covered only the Swedish portion. The current Swedish government chose in October 2025 not to extend that support.

RDC had already been SJ’s partner on the German section since 2022 and owns the rolling stock. In a June 1, 2026, press note it said it would continue the established Berlin to Hamburg to Stockholm night train commercially after the funding ended. Kathleen Stöckel, RDC’s night-train chief operating officer, thanked SJ for operational support on the Scandinavian section during the handoff.

The connection remains. The product changed. Daily PSO frequency is gone. Tickets no longer sit in the SJ app. Anyone who booked an SJ EuroNight for a September date needs to confirm the operator named on the ticket and the sales channel for any change.

Three Departures a Week Replace Daily Service

RDC’s published pattern is year-round, three times weekly in both directions, as trains 344 and 345. From Berlin, EuroNight 344 leaves at 18:39 on Mondays and Fridays. On Wednesdays it leaves Hamburg at 21:53. Arrival in Stockholm is 9:45 the next day. Southbound, EuroNight 345 leaves Stockholm at 17:29 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, reaching Hamburg at 5:53 on Wednesdays and Berlin shortly before 9:00 on Fridays and Sundays.

That is a real planning cut. A traveler who used to treat the sleeper as a nightly option now has to match a Berlin meeting or a Stockholm hotel checkout to those three nights. RDC says the train still carries sleeper, couchette, and seated cars, with up to five sleepers. The route is still about 1,500 kilometers.

If you are pairing the sleeper with a Stockholm park day, Deep Arrival’s Gröna Lund planning guide is the local ride page. A 9:45 arrival is late for a park open, so budget a hotel night or a slow first day rather than a same-morning rope drop.

Snälltåget Adds Winter Dates on the Same Corridor

Railway Gazette says private operator Snälltåget, which has run Sweden to Germany night trains without subsidy since 2012, welcomed the end of the SJ support. Commercial manager Marco Andersson called the subsidy a short-term fix and said long-distance international services should follow passenger demand. AllRail had earlier called the SJ subsidy unfair competition on a route Snälltåget already served commercially.

Snälltåget is filling some of the gap. Until October 30, 2026, it runs Stockholm to Berlin six times a week in each direction, every day except Saturdays. From November 2 to December 11 that falls to four times a week. After holiday departures in late December and early January, the operator pauses for winter and plans to resume after Easter. That seasonal model is the opposite of RDC’s thinner year-round grid.

If you need a midweek night that RDC does not run, Snälltåget is the first place to look through October. Do not assume it is a drop-in replacement in January. The winter pause is part of the published 2026 to 2027 plan, not a rumor.

Tickets Move Off SJ to Nachtexpress Sites

SJ’s English EuroNight page told passengers that from September 1, 2026, the Stockholm to Hamburg to Berlin night train is operated by a new company under the name RDC EuroNight, and that tickets for September travel onward are sold at nattexpressen.se. SJ’s booking FAQ, dated September 1, says it is not possible to buy EuroNight tickets via SJ for travel from that date, and points customers to nachtexpress.de.

RDC opened those portals on June 1. Use the German or Swedish Nachtexpress site, not sj.se, for a September or later sleeper on this corridor. Keep the confirmation email. Operator changes are when through-tickets and delay-repay paths get messy. If a trip still shows as SJ EuroNight for a September date, call before you travel.

RDC is a German night-train specialist. SJ remains the Swedish incumbent for other domestic and Nordic trains. Do not treat this as SJ leaving night trains as a category. It is this subsidized international pair that moved.

Booking Rules for the Next Six Months

Match the night of the week to the operator before you lock a hotel. RDC is the year-round three-day grid. Snälltåget is the denser option through October 30, then thinner through December 11, then a winter break. A Saturday Stockholm departure is an RDC night, not a Snälltåget night, in the current Railway Gazette account.

Budget the frequency cut. A missed connection in Hamburg on a three-day-a-week sleeper can cost a full extra night in a hotel. Build a buffer on the German side, especially if you are arriving on a Deutsche Bahn ticket that is not issued with the sleeper. RDC said SJ is still helping on the Scandinavian section during the start, but that is an operations note, not a through-ticket promise.

The political fight is not your booking problem. Centre-left and green parties in Sweden criticized dropping the subsidy while cutting aviation climate taxes. For a traveler, the useful facts are the August 31 cutoff, the September 1 operator change, the three-day RDC grid, and Snälltåget’s autumn calendar. Price both sites before you assume the sleeper is full.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Need a year-round Stockholm to Berlin sleeper Book RDC EuroNight three times weekly at nachtexpress.de or nattexpressen.se. Do not use sj.se from September 1, 2026.
Need more than three nights a week through October Check Snälltåget first. It runs six weekly trains until October 30, 2026, except Saturdays.
Are traveling in January or February 2027 RDC’s three-day grid is the standing option. Snälltåget plans a winter pause until after Easter.
Already hold an SJ EuroNight ticket for September Confirm the operator and change rules. SJ says it no longer sells this product from September 1.
Planning Impact

August 31, 2026, was the last SJ PSO night. The subsidized daily pattern is over. Do not plan as if a sleeper leaves every evening.

September 1, 2026, is the RDC start and the SJ sales cutoff. New tickets belong on Nachtexpress sites.

October 30, 2026, is Snälltåget’s six-day peak end. November 2 to December 11 is four days a week, then holiday extras, then a winter pause.
