Star of the Seas Tests App Room Service: What the $7.95 Fee Buys

ShareEmailWhatsAppLinkedInXFacebook

Royal Caribbean is letting passengers on Star of the Seas order room service from its mobile app, the first ship in the fleet to do so. The line told Pinnacle Club members in a letter that “Star of the Seas is the first ship in the fleet to introduce Room Service requests through the Royal Caribbean App,” according to Royal Caribbean Blog, which reported the pilot on 21 September 2026.

The ordering method is new; the price is not. Orders still carry the standard room service charge and gratuity, which our guide to Royal Caribbean room service fees breaks down across the fleet.

At a Glance
  • Ship: Star of the Seas only, as a pilot.
  • What’s new: room service orders in the Royal Caribbean App instead of the cabin phone.
  • Cost: $7.95 service charge per order plus an 18 percent gratuity.
  • Suites: suite guests do not pay the service charge, the blog reports.
  • Rollout: no fleetwide date announced.

App Ordering on Star of the Seas

Instead of calling from the stateroom phone, passengers browse the room service menu in the Royal Caribbean App, add items and send the order, in a layout the blog compares to food delivery apps. The pilot covers the room service menu only; suite guests cannot yet use the app to order dishes from the main dining room menu, which suites can normally request by phone.

Royal Caribbean Blog’s report is based on screenshots from a passenger on the current sailing and on the Pinnacle Club letter. It also says the line’s senior vice president of food and beverage mentioned the project during a travel agent webinar, pointing to a wider rollout, but Royal Caribbean has not published a timetable.

Fees Stay at $7.95 Plus Gratuity

Nothing about the price changes with the app. Royal Caribbean’s own room service FAQ says a $7.95 service charge applies per order and that an 18 percent gratuity is added automatically to the check. The FAQ notes the charge can change without notice.

Because the gratuity is a percentage of the check, a large order costs more in gratuity than a single coffee, while the $7.95 charge is the same per order. Combining requests into one order is the simplest way to keep the total down.

Decision Matrix
If you are… What to expect
Sailing on Star of the Seas Look for room service ordering in the app.
On another Royal Caribbean ship Keep ordering by stateroom phone for now.
In a suite No service charge; the 18 percent gratuity still applies.
Wanting dining room dishes delivered Use the phone; the app covers the room service menu only.
Watching costs Group items into fewer orders to avoid repeat charges.

Why Star of the Seas

Star of the Seas is the second of Royal Caribbean’s Icon class ships and sails seven night Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral, Florida. As one of the line’s newest and largest ships, it is a natural place to test changes to onboard ordering before they reach older ships, where the app’s in cabin features and kitchen systems vary.

The Wider Push to App Service

The pilot also fits a wider shift toward app based service at sea. Royal Caribbean passengers already use the app for check in, dining reservations and shore excursions, and room service is one of the few everyday requests that still depended on the phone.

For passengers, the practical gains are a visible menu with prices on screen, fewer misheard orders, and no waiting on hold at busy breakfast times. Whether the kitchen can keep up with easier ordering is the open question, and one the pilot is presumably meant to answer before any wider rollout.

What We Do Not Know Yet

Royal Caribbean has not said how long the pilot runs, whether it will expand to other Icon class ships first, or whether delivery times differ between app and phone orders.

It is also unclear whether the app will show order status or estimated delivery times, a feature common in food delivery apps that would help passengers plan around a late breakfast or a pre dinner snack.

If you sail on Star of the Seas in the coming weeks and the option does not appear, the phone route still works, and the fee is the same either way.

Planning Impact

New: app room service orders on Star of the Seas.

Same price: $7.95 per order plus 18 percent gratuity.
