Southwest Opens Phoenix-Birmingham Fall Nonstops Oct. 1

Southwest Airlines is putting Phoenix Sky Harbor to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth nonstops back on the fall schedule, with the carrier’s public booking calendar showing service from Oct. 1, 2026. The Arizona Republic reported on Aug. 29 that the early pattern is four flights a week, with denser flying around Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break weeks in March 2027.

This is a bookable schedule change for travelers who want a one-seat hop between central Arizona and northern Alabama. It is not a brand-new city pair forever. A Southwest spokesperson told the Republic the airline has flown Phoenix to Birmingham at varying seasonal frequencies before, including a 2024 market test celebrated by Birmingham airport officials.

What changed on the Phoenix to Birmingham map

For much of the summer schedule, travelers moving between Phoenix and Birmingham typically faced a connection. Southwest’s published Phoenix to Birmingham page now lists nonstop inventory again, with October fares and a stated average flight time of about 3 hours and 17 minutes over roughly 1,455 miles.

The Arizona Republic framed the restart as new fall service for Sky Harbor passengers who want Alabama without a mid-trip plane change. The same report places the first flight on Oct. 1 and says the base pattern is four weekly round trips before holiday peaks.

Independent schedule aggregators that read carrier filings show the same October start. FlightConnections and FlightsFrom both list Southwest as the only nonstop operator on PHX-BHM beginning in October 2026, with early week patterns that concentrate on selected weekdays rather than a full daily bank.

How often the nonstops run, and when they thicken

Four days a week is enough for many leisure and visiting-friends trips, but it is not a hub-frequency product. If your preferred day of week is dark at launch, you will still connect or shift dates. The Republic said Southwest plans near-daily service in the Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks, then daily flying for a few weeks in March 2027 when many schools break.

Treat the calendar, not the headline, as authority.
