Skull Island Kong Stays Closed at Universal Orlando

Skull Island: Reign of Kong has been closed for most of the time since August 27, 2026 at Universal Islands of Adventure, according to CrowdLevels wait-time records, and independent park trackers still listed the ride closed on September 12. Universal Orlando has not posted a reopen date or an official reason for the outage.

If you are going to Islands of Adventure this week, do not build the morning around Kong. Check the Universal Orlando app before you walk to Skull Island, then use our Skull Island Reign of Kong ride guide for height, Express, and vehicle details that still apply when the attraction returns.

At a Glance
  • Status: Closed on September 12, 2026, with no Universal reopen date.
  • Outage window: Down most days since August 27; briefly listed open on August 31, then closed again.
  • Official page: Universal still presents Kong as a current Islands of Adventure attraction.
  • App: The Universal Florida app has shown a Closed listing during the outage.
  • When it runs: 36-inch minimum height and Universal Express when operating.

The Outage Timeline at Islands of Adventure

CrowdLevels reported on September 11 that Kong remained closed after being unavailable for most of the period since August 27. The ride was briefly listed as open on August 31, then closed again the next day. That pattern is an unannounced operational outage, not a dated refurbishment with a return window on Universal’s public calendar.

TouringPlans listed the attraction as currently closed on September 12, with the reopen date marked unknown. Live wait boards, including Laughing Place’s Islands of Adventure table the same day, also showed Skull Island: Reign of Kong as closed while the rest of the park ran a normal 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. schedule. Those independent boards agree on the status even though Universal has not published a closure notice.

Kong is not the park’s longest line when it is running. CrowdLevels put the 90-day average posted wait at about 20 minutes, with a reliability score of 90.2 over that window. Inside the Magic separately noted that 2026 posted waits have hovered near 25 minutes, far below Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World VelociCoaster. The outage still matters because Kong is a unique dark-ride island, not a duplicate of those coasters.

Universal Has Not Posted a Reopen Date

Universal’s public attraction page for Skull Island: Reign of Kong still describes the ride as a current Islands of Adventure experience. On September 12 it showed park hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., the 36-inch height rule, a supervising companion under 48 inches, Universal Express, and the standard parental advisory for mature themes and intense sound. It did not mention a closure, a refurbishment, or a return date.

WDW News Today reported the same split on September 12: the website continued to list Kong as a current attraction with ordinary hours, while the Universal Florida app showed Closed in the list view. The site has not formally labeled the outage as indefinite, which means the ride could reopen without a press note. It also means a printed touring plan that assumes Kong is a midday filler can fail on arrival.

That is why the live app, not the marketing page, is the decision tool. Our Islands of Adventure wait times page is the Deep Arrival place to compare Kong against the rest of the park once Universal restores it. Until then, treat the attraction as unavailable unless the app flips to an actual posted wait.

What the Fire Talk Does Not Prove

Fan posts on Facebook and Reddit have claimed the King Kong animatronic caught fire during repairs. WDW News Today and Inside the Magic both traced those posts and found no photographs, no named witness, and no Universal confirmation. Both outlets state clearly that the fire claim is unverified. Deep Arrival is not treating a fire as a confirmed cause.

Universal has not said the figure is damaged, has not issued a safety statement, and has not tied the outage to a specific mechanical failure. The official ride copy still describes Kong as about three stories tall and 18 feet wide at the shoulders, with a head larger than an automobile. That is marketing language from the attraction page, not evidence about the current machine.

A 2008 backlot fire at Universal Studios Hollywood destroyed a different King Kong figure on the Studio Tour. That California incident is not proof of what is happening in Orlando in 2026. If Universal later confirms a cause, that is a material update. Until then, plan around the confirmed closure, not around an unconfirmed fire.

How to Plan a Visit Without Kong

Build the day around rides that are actually posting waits. Hagrid’s, VelociCoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey are the capacity sinks at Islands of Adventure. If you hold Universal Express, spend it there. Kong’s usual 20-minute wait was never the Express justification; losing it should not wreck a well-ordered park day.

Families using the 36-inch height line still have plenty of IOA capacity: The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish, Flight of the Hippogriff, and Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges when the water rides are running. The Skull Island queue itself is part of the experience, with live actors in the caves, so a closed ride also removes that walk-through. Do not send kids to the island entrance expecting a consolation queue.

Halloween Horror Nights 35 is running select nights at Universal Studios Florida through November 1, 2026, not at Islands of Adventure. A daytime IOA ticket is still a separate park day. If Kong was the one IOA credit on a three-park Florida resident ticket, keep the Islands day and substitute VelociCoaster or Hagrid’s rather than trying to swap the date at the gate. Ticket rules for those special 3-day offers are on Universal’s site and are not changed by this outage.

Nearby Rides and the Rest of Your Day

Some September 12 wait boards also showed Jurassic Park River Adventure, Camp Jurassic, and the Jurassic Park Discovery Center as closed. Water rides and play areas close for weather, seasonal cycles, or separate work. Do not assume those listings are part of the same Kong outage. Check each one in the app the morning you go.

Thunder Falls Terrace, the table-service restaurant next to Skull Island, already closed in July 2026 for a signature dining conversion, which we covered in our Islands of Adventure dining note. That is a different decision from the ride outage, but it does mean the Kong corner of the park currently offers less food and no dark ride. Plan lunch in Toon Lagoon, Mythos, or a Jurassic venue that is actually serving.

Inside the Magic reported that Kong closed 87 times in January 2026 alone, so reliability was already a planning issue before this longer gap. A two-week-plus silence is still unusual because Universal usually restores a 20-minute attraction quickly. Until the app shows a wait, leave Kong off the must-do list and put the saved hour into Hagrid’s or a second VelociCoaster lap.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Visit Islands of Adventure this weekend Assume Kong is closed unless the Universal app posts a wait the morning you arrive.
Hold Universal Express Spend it on Hagrid’s, VelociCoaster, Hulk, and Forbidden Journey, not on a dark ride that is not running.
Travel with kids at the 36-inch height Keep the IOA day. Use Hippogriff, Seuss rides, and water rides that are posting waits.
Built the day around the Kong finale Do not wait at the Skull Island entrance. Recast the hour toward a coaster or a meal away from Thunder Falls Terrace.
Planning Impact

August 27 is the outage start in CrowdLevels records. Do not treat Kong as a scheduled refurbishment with a published return. It has been down most days since that date, with only a brief open listing on August 31.

September 12 is the current check. The Universal Florida app still showed Closed, while the public ride page still marketed Kong as a current attraction with 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. park hours.

A posted wait in the Universal app is the reopen signal. Until that wait appears, leave Skull Island off the must-do list and spend Express on Hagrid’s, VelociCoaster, and Hulk.
