Six Flags Great America’s Oktoberfest begins September 19, but arriving when the gates open will not mean the festival has started. The Gurnee, Illinois, park lists its Bavarian food, beer and entertainment program from 2 p.m. until one hour before park closing on select dates through November 1.
That creates a different afternoon and evening window from the full park day. The official Oktoberfest listing supplies the festival hours, while our Six Flags Great America park-hours calendar currently lists September 19 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; under the published event rule, that would put Oktoberfest’s finish at 10 p.m., subject to schedule changes.
- First date: September 19, 2026, at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee.
- Season: Select dates through November 1, not daily operation.
- Festival hours: From 2 p.m. until one hour before park closing.
- Program: German-inspired food, craft and imported beers, music and family activities.
- Separate decision: Fright Fest haunted mazes require their own access product.
An Afternoon Start, Not an Opening-Gate Event
For visitors driving from Chicago or Milwaukee primarily for Oktoberfest, the relevant arrival target is the festival’s afternoon start rather than the park’s morning opening. Guests who want rides first can use the earlier park hours, but should not assume the seasonal food and entertainment program begins at the same time.
The closing rule also changes the calculation for an evening visit. Oktoberfest ends an hour before the park does, so the final operating hour is not an extra hour of guaranteed festival service. Check the selected day’s closing time rather than applying the opening Saturday’s schedule to every date in the season.
The park directs visitors to the Six Flags app for showtimes and directions. A listed festival window is not a continuous performance schedule, and the operator says entertainment, activities, attractions and ride availability can change without notice.
Bavarian Food and Music Join the Ride Day
The published food examples include bratwurst, warm pretzels and spätzle, alongside craft beers, German-style brews, lagers and ales. The program also promises German-inspired music, live performances and activities described as family-friendly; it is not presented as a beer-only event restricted to an adults’ outing.
Those examples establish the festival’s flavor, not a complete priced menu. The event page does not establish that every food or drink purchase is included with admission, nor does it publish a tasting-package entitlement in the description. Visitors should check individual purchases rather than treating access to the celebration as an unlimited dining offer.
FOX 32 Chicago’s fall-event reporting independently identifies Oktoberfest as a non-spooky alternative in the park’s autumn lineup and confirms the September 19 to November 1 window. Its August report is advance coverage, not evidence that the festival has already opened.
Three Fall Programs, Different Expectations
Oktoberfest shares the fall calendar with daytime Tricks and Treats and nighttime Fright Fest. That gives a group different ways to shape the same visit, but it does not make their schedules, tone or admission conditions interchangeable.
The park’s Fright Fest rules describe the evening celebration as intensely scary and not recommended for children younger than 13 after 6 p.m. Oktoberfest’s family-friendly description should not be taken as a promise that the wider park remains free of evening scares.
For maze access, the distinction is financial as well as thematic. The operator sells a bundle combining park admission and haunted mazes, plus a maze-only add-on that expressly excludes park admission. Buying an ordinary park ticket for Oktoberfest therefore should not be confused with buying every nighttime haunted attraction.
Check the Date Before Choosing the Ticket
September 19 is the first advertised Oktoberfest date, with the remaining season described as select dates. Choose a date the event actually operates before comparing ticket products, especially if the main reason for the trip is the festival rather than the rides.
A passholder should likewise confirm that the pass covers the intended visit and separately review any optional maze purchase. This is a scheduled return next weekend, not an announcement of new pass benefits or a new park-wide entry requirement.
| Your Main Plan | Timing or Ticket Check |
|---|---|
| Oktoberfest first | Plan around the 2 p.m. start on an event date. |
| Rides before the festival | Check the park’s separate opening time. |
| An evening food stop | Allow for Oktoberfest ending one hour before park close. |
| Add haunted mazes | Check the bundle or maze add-on; park admission alone is not the same product. |
September 19 brings the first festival afternoon. Confirm the operating date, then use the park’s closing time to calculate the earlier Oktoberfest finish.
Family-friendly programming has a time and place. Review the evening Fright Fest warning before extending a young family’s visit into the nighttime event.
When does Oktoberfest start at Six Flags Great America?
September 19, 2026, with select dates through November 1. The published daily event start is 2 p.m.
Does Oktoberfest run until the park closes?
No. The operator lists its finish one hour before park closing, so the end time depends on the chosen date.
Are Fright Fest mazes included with an Oktoberfest park visit?
Do not assume so. Haunted mazes require the appropriate bundle or add-on, and the maze-only add-on does not include park admission.
