Shedd Aquarium Welcomes Four Marineland Belugas After Rescue Flight

Four rescued beluga whales from Canada's closed Marineland park arrived at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium on 21 July 2026, opening the first public chapter of a multi-city rehoming effort.

Marineland of Canada, the long-running Niagara Falls marine park, closed to the public and left its beluga colony without a viable long-term home. Canadian authorities blocked earlier export plans toward China, and partners in the United States and Europe offered habitats instead.

Shedd's official rescue brief says the aquarium is preparing to rehome as many as 10 belugas into its roughly 3-million-gallon cold-water Abbott Oceanarium. The 21 July flight delivered the first four females as a group because handlers wanted to preserve their existing social bonds.

Shedd identified the four newcomers with estimated ages: Acadia at about 27 years, Osiris and Sierra at about 26 years each, and Lillooet at about 21 years. Staff moved them together as a sub-pod rather than as four unrelated animals.

Lead veterinarian Dr. Karisa Tang called the arrival the start of the next care chapter. She said teams are focused on support, nutrition, and treatment while the whales settle.

Director of animal behavior Charlie Jacobsma said early positive signs include eating, socializing, and investigating the habitat. He stressed cautious optimism rather than a finished recovery.

Those are clinical milestones, not exhibit marketing lines. A whale can be on site and still need quiet time, limited public programming, and flexible tank rotations that change what a ticketed guest sees hour by hour.

How the transport worked

Canadian Press described a slow, animal-first logistics chain. Handlers lifted each beluga from a pool by sling, placed it in a water-filled container, and moved the convoy carefully toward the airport while avoiding steep grades where possible.

Aircraft takeoff and landing profiles were also managed gradually. Marine-mammal veterinarians traveled with the animals.

If your trip is already booked for late July, treat Oceanarium time as flexible. Arrive early enough to re-check the day's schedule, and build a second highlight such as a Chicago history stop so the visit does not hinge on one animal program.

Another open question is breeding policy. Canadian animal-law advocates want guarantees that exported whales will not become a new captive-breeding pipeline outside Canada's Ending the Captivity of Whales and Dolphins Act.

Shedd's emailed reply to WTTW focused on rescue, acclimation, welfare, and AZA standards when breeding occurs. That reply does not turn this arrival day into a finished legal settlement.
