Mürren Cable Car and Allmendhubel Closures Oct. 19: Plan Your Route

The cableway linking Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen Valley with Gimmelwald and Mürren will close for its annual maintenance from October 19 to October 30, 2026, Schilthorn Cableway says on its timetable page. During the closure a replacement shuttle bus connection runs via Mürren between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., with limited seats and possible waits.

The Allmendhubel funicular above Mürren also closes from October 19, and stays shut until December 11, the operator says. The upper cableways from Mürren to Birg and from Birg to the Schilthorn summit have no closures listed and run every day of the year, Holidays to Switzerland reports in its 2026 closure guide.

Stechelberg to Mürren Cableway Closure Dates

The Schilthorn Cableway timetable lists the Stechelberg to Gimmelwald to Mürren section as closed for maintenance from October 19 to October 30, 2026. The same page lists the next maintenance closures for that section from April 26 to May 7, 2027, and on October 28 and 29, 2027.

The Stechelberg end of the system is the usual way up for visitors who park or arrive by bus in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and want to reach Gimmelwald, Mürren or the Schilthorn without changing at Grütschalp. While it is closed, the operator says a shuttle bus replacement connection runs via Mürren between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. It warns that seats are limited and that there can be waiting times.

Allmendhubel Funicular Closed Until December

The Mürren to Allmendhubel funicular normally runs every 20 minutes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the operator says. Its maintenance closure runs much longer than the cableway’s, from October 19 to December 11, 2026, so anyone heading up to Allmendhubel during that period should plan to walk and check directly with the operator whether facilities at the top, such as the panorama restaurant, are open. The funicular’s spring 2027 closure is listed from April 5 to May 28.

Reaching the Schilthorn and Piz Gloria in Late October

The upper sections from Mürren to Birg and on to the Schilthorn summit, home of the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant, are listed in the Holidays to Switzerland guide as operating 365 days a year. That means a late October Schilthorn trip is still possible, but the first leg from the valley will take longer if you would normally board at Stechelberg. Plan for the shuttle bus connection and its limited seating, and leave earlier in the day so you are not racing the 6 p.m. end of the shuttle service.

The operator reserves the right to reduce or stop service in bad weather or storms, so check the timetable page on the morning of your trip. Fares are published in Swiss francs and are valid until December 12, 2026, with discounts for Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card and Eurail holders listed on the same page.

Planning a Lauterbrunnen Valley Trip in October

Late October is shoulder season in the Jungfrau Region, and several lifts take maintenance breaks before winter. If your itinerary depends on a specific cableway, funicular or mountain railway, check that operator’s own timetable for the exact dates rather than relying on summer schedules. For Mürren and Gimmelwald specifically, the Stechelberg cableway closure ends on October 30, so travelers arriving at the very end of the month have more options.
