The New Pass Changes Airport Goodbyes in Salt Lake City

The Transportation Security Administration says Gateside gives people who receive TSA PreCheck benefits terminal access even when they are not flying. The agency specifically presents the pass as a way to welcome or send off travelers at the gate, meet someone during a layover, and visit shops or restaurants beyond the checkpoint.

That creates a different decision from an airline courtesy gate pass. A visitor does not need to be escorting an unaccompanied child or helping a traveler with a disability to state a reason for going through security. The visitor does need to qualify for the TSA program, apply ahead, receive approval, and complete screening.

Axios Salt Lake City reported that applications opened this week at 13 airports, including Salt Lake City. Its local importance is easy to see: airport arrivals in Utah can bring large family greetings, while a friend connecting through Salt Lake City may have enough time for a gate area meal but not enough time to leave security.

Applications Open One to Three Days Before the Visit

Axios says applicants should start no earlier than three days and no later than one day before the visit. The process uses a Login.gov account, so a first time applicant should allow time to create the account and complete its security steps. Do not wait until the traveler is already boarding the flight into Salt Lake City.

Use the exact date of the airport visit, not the date when a departing traveler leaves another city. This distinction matters around overnight trips and late arrivals. A Gateside approval is tied to the planned terminal visit, so the airport date should match the day the visitor actually expects to reach security.

Approval appears in the applicant’s account dashboard, according to Axios. Keep the account accessible on a charged phone and bring the identification normally accepted at the checkpoint. If a child is part of the visit, add that child during the application rather than assuming the adult approval automatically covers the group.

Plan for a refusal or delay. The program creates an application path, not an entitlement to enter whenever desired. Until approval appears, keep a public side meeting point as the backup and do not promise a traveler that the visitor will be waiting at the aircraft door.

TSA PreCheck Status Is the Main Eligibility Gate

The official TSA page tells applicants to use their Known Traveler Number, commonly called a KTN. That means the pass is designed for people who already receive TSA PreCheck benefits. A companion who does not have qualifying status should not assume that another person’s membership can be shared.

The distinction is central to the headline. No flight is needed, but eligibility still is. A nontraveler without the required trusted traveler status cannot use the general passenger line as a substitute for the Gateside process, and buying airport parking does not create secure terminal access.
