The Bear Lake Road permit is the one that runs to October 18, and it is the last reservation Rocky Mountain National Park requires this year. The standard timed entry permit stops six days earlier, after Monday, October 12, according to the park’s Recreation.gov listing.
From October 19 the whole park is reservation free until the system returns in late May. That reopens the late autumn trip a lot of visitors give up on, and our Rocky Mountain National Park road trip guide is built around the drives that window puts back in reach.
- Standard timed entry: required 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Monday, October 12.
- Timed Entry plus Bear Lake Road: required 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Sunday, October 18.
- Cost: a non refundable 2 dollar Recreation.gov processing fee, on top of the park entrance fee.
- The catch: the park says Trail Ridge Road normally closes in mid October, in the same stretch the permits end.
Two Permits, Two End Dates, Six Days Apart
The split confuses people every autumn because the two permits are sold as one system. The standard permit covers everything except the Bear Lake Road corridor, which the National Park Service lists as Trail Ridge Road, the Alpine Visitor Center, the west side and Wild Basin.
The second permit adds the corridor itself: Moraine Park, Sprague Lake, the Park and Ride, Glacier Gorge Trailhead and Bear Lake. That corridor is the busiest ground in the park, which is why it keeps its reservation six days longer than everywhere else.
The Hours Differ More Than the Dates Do
A standard permit is only needed between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Bear Lake version covers 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., a thirteen hour window against a five hour one, so the corridor is effectively reserved for the entire usable day.
That gap matters more than the calendar for anyone planning before October 12. A sunrise start at Glacier Gorge needs a permit; the same start anywhere else in the park does not.
Trail Ridge Road Normally Closes the Same Week
The park states plainly that Trail Ridge Road normally closes in mid October and reopens to through travel in the last week of May, weather permitting. That is the same stretch of the calendar in which both permit requirements expire.
So the reservation free window a visitor gains is also the window in which the park’s headline drive can vanish overnight. No 2026 closing date has been published, and the most recent closure the park announced was November 14 in 2025, which shows how wide the range is.
What Stays Open After the Road Shuts
The park names its own survivors, which is more useful than a general warning. Bear Lake Road and Endovalley Road stay open, as does Trail Ridge Road itself on the west side from the Grand Lake Entrance to the Colorado River Trailhead.
On the east side the road stays open as far as Hidden Valley and Many Parks Curve. That is enough for a full day of driving and walking, but it is not the 48 mile crossing to Grand Lake and it does not reach the 12,183 foot high point.
You Can Already Skip the Permit Before Those Dates
The requirement is a window, not a gate. Entering before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. needs no standard permit at all, which is why the park’s own advice for a busy October Saturday is an early start rather than a refresh of the reservation page.
The Bear Lake corridor is the exception that swallows the rule, because its 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. window leaves almost no unreserved daylight. Before October 18, that corridor is the one place where the early start does not work.
Who Never Needed a Reservation
Three groups are exempt outright: holders of a wilderness overnight camping permit, anyone with a campground reservation, and operators travelling under a Commercial Use Authorization. Their existing booking is the entry document.
Everyone else pays the 2 dollar Recreation.gov processing fee per reservation, which is separate from the park entrance fee. The September 1 release already covered October 1 through 18, so the final permits of the season are out and moving.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Are visiting on or after October 19 | Book nothing. No timed entry permit of either type is required for the rest of the season. |
| Want Bear Lake between now and October 18 | You need the Timed Entry plus Bear Lake Road permit for any arrival between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. |
| Are visiting the rest of the park before October 13 | Either hold a standard permit for a 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. arrival, or simply arrive outside those hours. |
| Are counting on driving Trail Ridge Road | Call the recorded road line at 970 586 1222 the morning you go. The park says mid October is the normal closing window. |
| Already hold a campground or wilderness booking | You are exempt from timed entry entirely, so do not buy a second reservation. |
October 12 is the last day the standard permit applies. After that the only reservation left in the park is for the Bear Lake Road corridor.
October 18 is the last day of the system for 2026. The requirement returns on May 22 in a normal year, so the window runs seven months.
Mid October is the road risk, not the permit risk. Build the trip around a Trail Ridge Road that may already be shut rather than around the reservation you no longer need.
When does Rocky Mountain National Park stop requiring reservations?
The standard timed entry permit is required through Monday, October 12, 2026, and the Bear Lake Road version through Sunday, October 18, 2026.
What is the difference between the two permits?
The standard permit covers the park except the Bear Lake Road corridor. The Bear Lake version adds Moraine Park, Sprague Lake, the Park and Ride, Glacier Gorge Trailhead and Bear Lake.
Can I enter without a reservation before those dates?
Yes, outside the permit hours. No standard permit is needed before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m., though the Bear Lake corridor is reserved from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.
How much does a timed entry permit cost?
A non refundable 2 dollar Recreation.gov processing fee per reservation. The park entrance fee is charged separately.
Will Trail Ridge Road still be open in late October?
There is no way to promise it. The park says the road normally closes in mid October, though in 2025 it stayed open to through travel until November 14.
Are there still permits left for early October?
The September 1 release covered October 1 through 18, and a further batch of next day permits is released at 7 p.m. Mountain time the night before each date.
