Riviera Travel’s river cruise update centre, last refreshed at 18:55 on 29 September 2026, says two sailings that embark on 30 September cannot pass the Rhine Gorge because water is too low, and it has cancelled two Rhine Cruise to Switzerland departures that were due to leave on 25 and 26 September. The operator is reviewing every remaining Rhine and Danube departure individually and will only keep a ship in service when an amended map still meets its Five Point Promise.
If you are on one of those ships, use the notice Riviera says it has already sent: take the revised itinerary with the stated compensation, rebook the same cruise in 2026 or 2027 at the price you paid, or claim a full refund. For how the Gorge, Cologne, Koblenz, and Rudesheim usually sit in a standard week on the river, start with Deep Arrival’s Rhine River Cruise Guide.
- Update: Riviera Travel restated Rhine and Danube operations at 18:55 on 29 September 2026.
- 30 September: MS George Eliot and MS Geoffrey Chaucer cannot pass the Rhine Gorge.
- Cancelled: MS Oscar Wilde on 25 September and MS Riviera Resplendence on 26 September, both Rhine Cruise to Switzerland.
- Gauge: Germany’s Pegelonline service listed the Kaub Rhine gauge at minus 2.0 centimeters at 23:15 CEST on 29 September.
- Choice: travel the amendment, rebook 2026 or 2027 at the same price, or take a full refund.
September 30 Ships Skip the Rhine Gorge
Riviera’s live table of departures operating with revised itineraries lists MS George Eliot on Cologne, the Rhine Gorge and Medieval Germany, sailing 30 September 2026, as unable to pass through the Rhine Gorge. The same table lists MS Geoffrey Chaucer on Cruise to the Heart of Europe, also 30 September, as unable to sail onto the Pfelling reach and the Rhine Gorge. Both ships remain in the programme on new maps rather than as outright cancellations.
Those two dates are the next embarkation cluster, not a historical recap. Guests due to board on 30 September should treat the email as current until Riviera sends a further change, because the operator says it reviews each sailing right up to departure and while the cruise is underway. Captains can still alter docking order, move guests between ships, or add rail links if a coach transfer would run too long.
The Gorge is the scenic core of a classic Cologne-to-Rudesheim week, which is why the skip matters even when the rest of the cruise still sails. Deep Arrival’s Rhine versus Danube comparison is the planning page to reopen if your replacement map now leans toward the Moselle, the Dutch waterways, or a western Danube rail connection instead of the original river.
Switzerland Sailings on 25 and 26 September Will Not Operate
Under cancelled cruises, Riviera says it will not operate MS Oscar Wilde’s Rhine Cruise to Switzerland on 25 September 2026 or MS Riviera Resplendence on the same itinerary on 26 September. The stated reason is low water in and around Dusseldorf, with no rain forecast that would restore confidence in the return to that reach. The company says those two decisions rest on guest numbers, excursions, transport, and ship positioning as well as the gauge, not on river height alone.
All affected guests, Riviera writes, have been contacted directly and offered a full refund among other options. Because those two Switzerland dates have already passed, the live task for those cabins is the refund or rebooking file, not a same-day boarding fight. Do not assume a neighbouring sailing is cancelled unless that ship’s row appears on the same table.
Kaub Gauge Sat at Minus 2 Centimeters on September 29
Germany’s Waterways and Shipping Administration Pegelonline current measurement for station KAUB recorded minus 2.0 centimeters at 23:15 CEST on 29 September 2026, with the low-water flag set. Kaub, at Rhine kilometre 546.23, is the reference gauge operators watch for the Middle Rhine and the Gorge. A negative reading is a planning alarm, not a literal remaining depth of the navigation channel.
Riviera says it does not steer by one number. The update centre explains that the company combines 52 official river gauges, weather modelling, and first-hand reports from captains, and that conditions can still move faster than a seven-to-ten-day forecast. That is why a sailing listed as revised on 29 September can change again before 30 September boarding, and why a later October date is not automatically safe.
Travel Extra reported on 27 September that Rhine and Danube river cruises were expected to stay disrupted until mid-October at the earliest, with about 75 percent of Riviera guests on affected trips choosing an alternative itinerary rather than walking away. Treat that share as industry reporting from two days earlier, not as a new Riviera statistic in the 29 September table.
Refund, Same-Price Rebook, or an Amended Route
For cancelled Switzerland cabins, Riviera’s written options are a price-matched rebooking of the same itinerary, cabin type, and departure airport in 2026 or 2027, a transfer to another Riviera vacation in those years, or a full refund. If the new trip costs less, the difference is refunded. If it costs more, Riviera contributes 350 dollars per person toward the extra. The company warns against transferring into a near-term Danube, Rhine, or Moselle cruise because those rivers can still move. It points instead to the Douro, Seine, or Rhone, or to escorted tours.
For sailings that still operate on a new map, Riviera says a significant change comes with a clear explanation of the replacement holiday and of the compensation tied to that change. Guests who do not want the amendment may cancel for a full refund. The northbound Rhine substitute runs toward Amsterdam, Kinderdijk, Antwerp, Ghent, and Bruges. Danube guests may see a Budapest night plus rail to Vienna and the Wachau rather than a long coach. Some Moselle dates keep Cochem, Bernkastel, Trier, Koblenz, and a Luxembourg day, with scenic sailing still advertised as the spine of the week.
Independent shore tours booked off the ship are not covered by Riviera’s automatic port-tour refund language on this page. If you bought a private Gorge, Heidelberg, or Black Forest day, call that operator with the new docking plan before you spend another deposit. For earlier Riviera booking mail on 2028 hardware, see Riviera’s free 2028 deck-upgrade window through 9 October, which is a separate commercial offer and does not replace a low-water refund.
October 2 and 3 Rhine Dates Are Already on New Maps
The 29 September table already revises MS Riviera Radiance, Budapest to the Black Sea, on 2 October, which cannot sail southeast of Budapest. MS Oscar Wilde’s Rhine and Moselle cruise on 2 October cannot pass the Rhine Gorge. MS Riviera Resplendence’s Rhine Cruise to Switzerland on 3 October cannot sail into Switzerland or through the Gorge. MS Emily Bronte’s Rhine, Strasbourg and Heidelberg cruise on 3 October is also blocked from the Gorge; Riviera says that departure will operate on the Moselle, with full details due the following day.
MS Riviera Radiance on The Blue Danube, 25 September, remains under review with Budapest still unavailable. MS Moments, formerly MS William Wordsworth, on The Blue Danube, 28 September, cannot pass between Vienna and Budapest. MS Emily Bronte on The Moselle, Luxembourg and the Majestic Rhine, 23 September, is already sailing a Gorge-free map. Those rows are for guests still aboard or still inbound, not for shoppers chasing a brand-new week.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Board MS George Eliot or MS Geoffrey Chaucer on 30 September | Read the 29 September amendment, pack for the replacement ports, and keep the next Riviera email open through boarding. |
| Held Oscar Wilde on 25 September or Riviera Resplendence on 26 September to Switzerland | Work the refund or same-price 2026 or 2027 rebook file; those two sailings will not operate. |
| Sail on 2 or 3 October on Radiance, Oscar Wilde, Resplendence, or Emily Bronte | Expect a Gorge skip, a Switzerland skip, a Black Sea skip, or a Moselle substitution, and decide on the amendment versus a refund now. |
| Are shopping a late-October Rhine week | Buy only after you reread the update centre the morning you pay, and prefer Douro, Seine, or Rhone if you need a firmer river. |
30 September 2026 is the next boarding gate. George Eliot and Geoffrey Chaucer guests should confirm transfers against the new map before leaving the airport, because a Gorge skip can change the first overnight berth.
2 to 3 October 2026 is the next published cluster. Four named ships already have Gorge, Switzerland, Black Sea, or Moselle substitutions on the 29 September table.
Mid-October is the earliest window Travel Extra cited on 27 September for more normal Rhine sailing. Until Riviera itself posts a recovery date, treat every remaining Rhine and Danube week as under review.
Did Riviera cancel the 30 September Rhine cruises?
No. MS George Eliot and MS Geoffrey Chaucer on 30 September 2026 remain in service on revised itineraries because they cannot pass the Rhine Gorge. The cancelled rows are MS Oscar Wilde on 25 September and MS Riviera Resplendence on 26 September.
What is the Kaub Rhine water level today?
Pegelonline listed the Kaub gauge at minus 2.0 centimeters at 23:15 CEST on 29 September 2026. That is a low-water flag at kilometre 546.23, not the exact remaining depth under a hull.
Will Riviera refund a changed Rhine cruise?
Yes. Riviera says guests who do not want a significant amendment may cancel for a full refund, and cancelled Switzerland guests have the same refund path plus a same-price 2026 or 2027 rebook.
How much will Riviera pay toward a more expensive replacement?
If you transfer to another Riviera vacation that costs more, the 29 September page says the company will contribute 350 dollars per person toward the extra. A cheaper replacement is refunded down to the new price.
Is the Rhine Gorge closed to every river ship?
Riviera’s table is a Riviera decision, not a blanket navigation ban. Other lines may still swap ships or coach around the shallow reach. Check your own operator’s notice for 30 September through 3 October.
When could a standard Rhine itinerary return?
Riviera has not posted a recovery date on the 29 September update. Travel Extra, writing on 27 September, said operators did not expect normal Rhine sailings before mid-October 2026 at the earliest.
