Rhine Low Water Alters Cruise Stops Through July 19

Low water on the Rhine is now changing passenger operations across several parts of the river. Köln-Düsseldorfer has cancelled five scheduled routes through July 19, closed a group of landing points and warned that some active gangways are unusually steep, while Scenic says sections of the Rhine are not currently suitable for navigation.

The practical message as of July 17 is broader than one delayed ship. Travelers with a river cruise, sightseeing sailing or independent transfer should verify the operating ship, exact pier, boarding accessibility and any revised embarkation plan directly with the operator before starting for the waterfront.

Five Rhine sailings are cancelled through July 19

The clearest current passenger notice comes from Köln-Düsseldorfer’s July 14 low water update. It cancels five scheduled circuits from July 14 through July 19, covering departures from Boppard, Mainz, Rüdesheim and Koblenz and affecting routes through St. Goar and St. Goarshausen.

The same notice lists Bad Honnef as unavailable and names multiple Middle Rhine stations that can no longer be approached. Koblenz, Oberlahnstein, Braubach, Kamp Bornhofen, Assmannshausen, Oberwesel, Lorch, St. Goarshausen and Bad Salzig appear with route or ship specific limitations, so a ticketed stop should not be assumed to operate from its normal landing point.

Cologne and Düsseldorf sightseeing sailings also carry uncertainty. Köln-Düsseldorfer says the Cologne panorama route may change with water and traffic conditions, while Düsseldorf sailings may be unable to enter Medienhafen, leaving the captain to communicate the actual route when conditions require an adjustment.

Low water is also an accessibility issue

The operator’s boarding warning is unusually direct. Some Rhine landing bridges are now very steep, crew members cannot physically assist guests with boarding or disembarking for insurance reasons, and passengers must move their own bicycles, trailers and electric bikes between the dock and vessel.

Piers 7 and 8 below Cologne’s Hohenzollern Bridge are identified as particularly steep. Düsseldorf’s second landing bridge at Burgplatz has both a steep approach and steps to the pontoon, which Köln-Düsseldorfer says makes it suitable only to a very limited extent for people with reduced mobility.

That changes the value of a routine schedule check. A sailing can remain listed while the boarding path is not workable for a particular passenger, so anyone who uses a wheelchair, walking aid or companion assistance should ask the operator about the actual pier and gangway before travel rather than relying on the route alone.

Longer river cruises may change ships or endpoints

Scenic’s current travel alert says parts of the Rhine, Main and upper Danube are affected and that some stretches are not suitable for navigation. Its operations teams are reviewing sailings and may transfer guests to a sister ship or alter embarkation and disembarkation locations while trying to preserve the main itinerary.

Scenic says affected guests and travel advisors will be contacted directly when a change is anticipated. That makes the operator’s message, booking portal and advisor communication more authoritative for a named departure than a general river map or a single gauge reading, because different ships have different drafts and operating limits.

The Upper Rhine is also showing a distinct service break. Schweizerische Schifffahrtsgesellschaft Untersee und Rhein says service between Stein am Rhein and Diessenhofen has been interrupted since June 27, with travelers advised to use the train for that segment while other named routes continue.

The Bonn gauge explains the pressure, not every sailing

Germany’s official ELWIS gauge for Bonn recorded 94 centimeters at 05:00 on July 17. The same table lists 142 centimeters as the equivalent water level and 121 centimeters as the mean low water value for its reference period, putting the current figure in useful context.

A gauge number is not a universal cancellation threshold for passenger ships. Vessel draft, local channel depth, the position of a landing stage and the captain’s operating judgment all matter, which is why two services on the same river can reach different decisions at the same time.

The operational risk became visible in Bonn on July 16 when the 135 meter Thurgau Gold grounded while approaching a landing point. WDR reported from the scene that a tow pulled the ship free later that day, no leak was found, and the 100 passengers and 45 crew remained aboard before the vessel continued toward Cologne.

That incident is now resolved rather than an ongoing rescue. Its relevance is evidence of how tight local margins have become, not a reason to describe every Rhine sailing as stopped or unsafe.

What passengers should take from the current notices

The Rhine is not closed as one continuous system. Some services continue, some stations are unavailable, five named Köln-Düsseldorfer circuits are cancelled through July 19, and longer cruise operators are preparing ship or endpoint changes where local depth makes them necessary.

The safest planning sequence is therefore specific: open the operator alert, match it to the exact departure, confirm the pier and boarding access, then adjust transfers only after the sailing details are clear. Recheck close to departure because the notices are responses to changing river conditions rather than permanent timetable revisions.
