Queen City Bridge Manchester Closed After Monday Inspection

Manchester, New Hampshire, closed the Queen City Bridge until further notice after a Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, inspection by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation flagged potential structural problems. The Union Leader quoted Manchester Public Works saying the city was notified that morning and shut the span to protect people already using it.

If you drive, bus, or ride through Manchester this week, treat this Merrimack River crossing as closed, not delayed. There is no published reopen date. Plan a detour on the city’s public works channels before you leave, then recheck notices the morning you travel. California drivers are already doing the same kind of reroute around the Vincent Thomas Bridge closure, a separate span with its own dates.

  • Traffic: Union Leader reported nearly 30,000 vehicles a day and peak hourly volume of 1,300.
  • Next step: Testing beyond a visual look; no reopen timetable as of Sept. 23.

Monday Closure After the State Inspection

Union Leader reported that the Queen City Bridge is a 14-span, 1,175-foot crossing of the Merrimack, originally built in 1923, and that it still carries weekday river traffic at that scale when it is open. Manchester Public Works said the full inspection had not been completed when the city closed the bridge. Director of Public Works Tim Clougherty told the paper around midday Monday that crews were still assessing it. Mayor Jay Ruais said he was in contact with Clougherty and with Governor Kelly Ayotte.

By Tuesday, Deputy Public Works Director Owen Friend-Gray said the state’s initial inspection was done Monday and that the city was waiting for more information. He said the first report was an apparent crack in one of the truss members, and that investigators were trying to determine whether the visual concern was superficial rust or a more significant structural issue. Methods beyond visual inspection were still underway.

WMUR’s Truss Notes and the 2024 Inspection

WMUR, citing Manchester Department of Public Works, reported rust buildup and a potential crack in the truss, the superstructure that supports the deck drivers use. University of New Hampshire civil engineering professor Erin Bell told the station the Manchester closure was the right call on a roughly 100-year-old structure. She described fatigue in a truss the way a paper clip eventually snaps after repeated bends.

WMUR said the 2024 inspection report showed rust in multiple areas, including the truss, but no crack at that time. The same report noted that a fracture-critical inspection needed to be completed by consultants. Manchester DPW confirmed to WMUR that a fracture-critical inspection was completed in 2024. A crack can appear inside a two-year inspection window, Bell said. That is why a Monday finding can close a bridge that was still carrying weekday traffic on Sunday.

Detours, Buses, and a Second River Crossing

Friend-Gray told Union Leader the city hoped to know more within a day or two of Tuesday’s briefing. As of WMUR’s Sept. 22 night report, there was still no timetable for a full reopen. Do not assume a midweek reopening because testing is “ongoing.” School bus runs in Manchester were already being rerouted, Union Leader reported, which is a signal that local operators are treating the closure as a multi-day traffic change.

The same week, Hudson closed one westbound lane of the Veterans Memorial Bridge toward Nashua after a separate biennial inspection found a crack in a beam. That is a different span, a different town, and a four-to-six-week repair window described by Hudson’s town engineer. Do not treat a Nashua-Hudson lane drop as a substitute crossing for a fully closed Queen City Bridge. If both river routes are in your usual path, rebuild the trip as if the Manchester crossing does not exist.

How to Drive Manchester Without That Span

The Queen City Bridge is a local river crossing, not an Interstate bypass you can ignore. Union Leader’s volume figures mean a closed deck dumps thousands of vehicles onto remaining streets and other bridges. Watch for city-posted detours rather than following a stale GPS route that still draws the closed line. Peak 1,300 vehicles an hour is the period when a missed closure costs the most time.

Interstate 293 is a different facility. A Wednesday crash sent a box truck into the Merrimack off I-293 in Manchester, according to Union Leader, with hospital transports and a temporary interstate disruption. That crash is not the Queen City inspection. It does mean Wednesday traffic in the same city had two unrelated river problems. If you are arriving from out of state, leave extra time and confirm both the Queen City closure and any I-293 restrictions the morning you drive.

Cause Still Unassigned as Testing Continues

Friend-Gray declined to tie the finding to the city’s $428 million Cemetery Brook Drain Tunnel project, saying the city did not yet understand the issue well enough to speculate on cause. Political statements about the Executive Council and the 10-year transportation plan are not inspection results. The load-bearing facts remain the Monday NHDOT notice, the city’s until-further-notice closure, the apparent truss crack still being tested, and the absence of a reopen date.

Until Manchester Public Works or the New Hampshire Department of Transportation publishes a repair plan and a date, the traveler decision is simple: do not count on this bridge. Recheck official traffic feeds the day you move, because an until-further-notice closure can last days or weeks without a new headline.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Drive the Queen City Bridge on a usual commute Assume it is closed until Manchester Public Works or NHDOT says otherwise, and pick a posted detour before you leave.
Are routing a bus, truck, or same-day delivery Remove the span from the run. School buses were already being rerouted after Monday’s close.
Need a Hudson-Nashua river crossing instead Do not treat Veterans Memorial Bridge as a full substitute. One westbound lane there is also closed for a separate beam crack.
Are visiting Manchester later this month Recheck the city and NHDOT notices the morning you travel. There is no published reopen date as of Sept. 23, 2026.
Planning Impact

Monday, Sept. 21, 2026 is the closure date. NHDOT notified Manchester Public Works that morning, and the city shut the bridge until further notice.

Further testing is the next gate. Friend-Gray said the city is checking whether the visual truss concern is rust or a deeper structural crack.

No reopen date is posted. Do not book a tight connection through this crossing until the city publishes a repair window.

Frequently Asked

Is the Queen City Bridge in Manchester closed?

Yes. Manchester closed it until further notice after a Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, NHDOT inspection. Recheck city notices before you drive.

Why did Manchester close the Queen City Bridge?

Inspectors flagged potential structural deficiencies. Friend-Gray said the initial report was an apparent crack in a truss member, and testing continues.

When will the Queen City Bridge reopen?

No date has been published. Public Works said the bridge stays closed until further notice while the inspection is completed.

How much traffic uses the Queen City Bridge?

Union Leader reported nearly 30,000 vehicles a day and peak hourly volume of about 1,300. That is why a full closure changes a Manchester driving day.

Is this the same as the Hudson-Nashua bridge lane closure?

No. Veterans Memorial Bridge in Hudson has one westbound lane closed after a separate beam crack. Queen City Bridge is a full Manchester closure.

Did the Cemetery Brook project cause the crack?

Friend-Gray said the city does not yet understand the issue well enough to speculate on cause, including that drain-tunnel project.
