Qantas Sets December 8 for Its Biggest Status Overhaul

Qantas has put a date on the first wave of its Frequent Flyer status overhaul: December 8, 2026. That is when excess Status Credit rollover and earning Status Credits through everyday spending begin, while Points Club, Points Club Plus and Green Tier stop accepting new progress.

The date turns a broad loyalty announcement into a real deadline. Members now need to check when their personal membership year ends, because that date determines whether current activity can count or whether the new rules begin in the next membership year.

What starts on December 8

Qantas’ official program-changes page says eligible members will be able to roll a portion of excess Status Credits into a new membership year beginning December 8. The rollover is automatic, so Qantas does not require separate registration.

Silver members can roll 25% of Status Credits earned above the 300-credit attain threshold, capped at 100 credits. Gold members can roll 50% above 700, capped at 350. Platinum members can roll 50% above 1,400, capped at 500, and Platinum One members can roll 50% above 3,600, also capped at 500.

The word “excess” matters. A Gold member finishing a qualifying year at 800 Status Credits does not roll half of 800. The member is 100 credits above the 700 attain threshold, so the formula produces a 50-credit rollover.

Travel Weekly Australia independently reported the December 8 launch and the wider program reset. It also notes that members will be able to earn up to 140 Status Credits per membership year across 10 ground categories.

How the membership-year timing works

Qantas Frequent Flyer does not use one universal calendar year for every member. Each account has a membership year based on when the person joined. The transition therefore treats members differently depending on whether their current year ends before or after December 8.

Members whose year ends from August 31 through November 30, 2026, move into their next membership year before the launch. Qantas says the rollover calculation will apply to excess Status Credits earned in that next year, not the year that already ended before December 8.

Members whose year ends December 31, 2026, or later may get a retroactive effect. Eligible Status Credits earned earlier in the current membership year can count toward the rollover once the feature launches, subject to the published threshold and cap.

The guiding question is not simply “How many Status Credits do I have?” It is “Which membership year is active on December 8?” Open My Account or the MyQFF section of the Qantas app and record the start and end dates before changing travel or spending plans.

What earning Status Credits on the ground means

From December 8, members can earn Status Credits through Qantas Points activity outside flying. Qantas lists 10 categories: credit cards, banking and home loans, insurance, car, home utilities, hotels and accommodation, holidays and experiences, everyday shopping, retail and lifestyle, and sustainability.

The annual maximum is 140 Status Credits. Qantas says eligible ground-earned credits will count toward annual tier progress and Lifetime Status, which makes them different from a temporary coupon that only closes one yearly gap.

Not every point is eligible. Qantas excludes transferred credit-card rewards, credit-card bonus points, hotel-program points earned outside Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qantas Wellbeing points, family transfers, Qantas Business Rewards transfers, top-up points and several bonus or milestone rewards.

Members who already earn eligible points may receive credit for activity from the membership year active on December 8. Qantas says those Status Credits will not post until the launch, even when the underlying points activity happened earlier in the eligible year.

International members remain eligible, but Qantas warns their location can limit the partners and categories available. Someone outside Australia should not assume the full 140-credit maximum is realistically accessible without checking the partner list in their market.

What happens to Points Club and Green Tier

Points Club, Points Club Plus and Green Tier retire on December 8. The final day to attain Points Club or Points Club Plus is December 7, and Qantas says benefits already earned can continue for their promised validity period.

That creates a short decision window for members already close to a threshold. Reaching Points Club before the cutoff may preserve benefits through the remainder of the current membership year and, in some cases described by Qantas, the following full membership year. Starting from zero only to chase a disappearing program is a different calculation.

Green Tier progress also stops on December 8. A member who already qualified but has not selected the reward gets 90 days from the qualification date to choose between 10,000 Qantas Points and 50 Status Credits, according to Qantas.

Existing vouchers and lounge invitations issued before retirement keep their published validity. Save copies of qualification dates, reward selections and voucher expirations before the old dashboards change.

Why rollover is helpful, but not a free status extension

Rollover reduces the feeling that flying beyond a tier threshold is wasted. A member with uneven annual travel can carry a portion of one strong year’s excess into the next year, creating a head start toward retention or a higher tier.

It does not preserve the full balance. The percentage formula and tier caps limit the carryover. Rolled credits also do not count toward the Loyalty Bonus, Platinum Bonus Reward, Platinum One Bonus Reward, Lifetime Status or Status Accelerators, even though they help annual tier progress.

Ground-earned Status Credits work differently. Qantas says those can count toward Lifetime Status, but the same credits do not count toward several bonus and accelerator targets. Members should keep annual status, lifetime status and bonus qualifications as separate math problems.

For Platinum One, rollover can help reach the 3,600 total annual requirement. It does not count toward the separate minimum of 2,700 credits that must come from flights carrying a Qantas flight number.

The later 2027 change could make status harder to retain

Qantas will later move Silver, Gold and Platinum to one target for both attaining and retaining a tier. The published retention targets become 300 for Silver, 700 for Gold and 1,400 for Platinum, with four qualifying Qantas or Jetstar flight numbers still required.

Those numbers are higher than the current lower renewal hurdles for many existing members. Platinum One’s retention target is not changing under this part of the plan. Qantas says the attainment thresholds for all tiers and the Lifetime Status thresholds also remain unchanged.

The exact effective date for those higher retention targets is not yet published. Qantas currently says later in 2027, while the December 8 launch applies to rollover, ground earning and retirement of the three sub-programs. Do not merge those timelines when deciding whether to book a status run.

The existing Loyalty Bonus will also be retired in 2027, with more details still to come. Platinum and Platinum One Bonus Rewards are staying, according to the current Qantas FAQ.

What members should do now

First, save the membership-year dates shown in your account. Second, total current Status Credits and separate the portion above your tier’s attain threshold. Third, list the everyday Qantas Points categories you already use without changing behavior.

Then check whether Points Club, Points Club Plus or Green Tier is within reach before December 7. Count the cash cost and opportunity cost of any extra activity. A reward is not valuable if qualifying requires an unnecessary flight, purchase or financial product.

Finally, resist booking solely from fear of losing status. Price the trip against competitors and against buying the benefit directly where possible. Lounge membership, a better schedule or a lower fare can be worth more than earning credits toward a tier you will struggle to keep.

What to watch next

Qantas still needs to publish detailed partner-earning rules, the exact later-2027 retention transition, and more information on retiring the Loyalty Bonus. Members should also watch how the app displays retroactive ground activity and rollover calculations on December 8.

For now, the most important new fact is the clock. December 7 is the last attainment day for the retiring sub-programs, and December 8 starts the new rollover and ground-earning system.
