Qantas Lets You Pay Cash to Upgrade at the Airport in Melbourne

Qantas now lets travelers buy an upgrade with cash at the airport after they check in, if seats are free in a higher cabin. The option is offered at the Qantas service desk, and the airline’s upgrade page says it is available on international flights and all domestic flights from Melbourne. Executive Traveller, which reported it on September 24, describes it as a trial at Melbourne Airport covering both domestic and international departures.

For travelers, it is a new last-minute way into premium economy or business class that does not depend on points or status. The catch is that Qantas has not published prices, so you will only learn the cost at the desk, and you earn Qantas Points and status credits based on the fare you originally bought rather than the cabin you end up sitting in.

Before you head to the airport, check your allowance in our guide to Qantas baggage limits, so you know what you are carrying whichever cabin you end up in.

How the Airport Upgrade Works

Qantas’s flight upgrades page describes the new option as a last-minute choice: after checking in, you ask at the Qantas service desk and pay cash for an upgrade if premium seats are available, with fast confirmation on the spot. It says the option is now available on international flights and all domestic flights from Melbourne, and that you will earn Qantas Points and status credits for the fare you originally purchased.

Executive Traveller reported that the upgrade can be confirmed on the spot if seats are available within three hours before takeoff, and that it covers premium economy and business class. It said upgraded passengers receive the full service of the higher cabin but keep the earning rate of their original booking. It described the scheme as a trial at Melbourne Airport and said Qantas did not provide pricing or detailed eligibility rules.

Airport Upgrades Versus Confirmed Upgrades

The airport option sits alongside Confirmed Upgrades, which Qantas introduced earlier. Its upgrade page says Confirmed Upgrades are fixed-price upgrades bought at the time of booking, with confirmation within 12 hours of payment. That gives you certainty and a known price in advance. The airport option, by contrast, depends on what is left unsold on the day, and you will not know the price until you ask.

Qantas also offers upgrades using Qantas Points, for members who would rather spend points than cash. Each method has trade-offs: points upgrades use your balance, Confirmed Upgrades require committing money early, and airport upgrades depend on luck and on a price you cannot check ahead of time.

Decision Matrix
If you want… Consider
Certainty before you fly A Confirmed Upgrade when you book.
To use points, not cash A Qantas Points upgrade request.
A spontaneous upgrade at Melbourne Ask at the service desk after check-in.
Full points and status credits Book the premium cabin outright instead.

Tips for Asking at the Desk

Arrive early enough to visit the service desk without rushing, since the upgrade depends on seats still being available and on staff processing it before boarding. Ask for the price for both premium economy and business if your flight has both, and compare it with what you paid.

Because the option depends on premium seats going unsold, it is likely to work best on quieter flights and least often at peak holiday times, when premium cabins tend to fill. Have a plan for the flight in your booked cabin either way. Remember that you will earn points and status credits at your original fare level, so the value is in the seat and service rather than in loyalty earning.

Melbourne Airport is also changing how people arrive and leave by car; see our report on the new pick-up and drop-off zones from October 6. We will watch for Qantas to publish prices or extend the airport option beyond Melbourne. If you are spending time in the city before your flight, our guide to things to do in Melbourne has ideas for a day or two.
