Prague Airport Passport Works: What Could Delay Your Exit?

Prague Airport’s Terminal 1 passport-control expansion could mean temporary queues before it delivers more capacity. The airport has scheduled work from the first half of September 2026 through the end of April 2027, including a phase when three existing passport desks will close temporarily.

For passengers arriving through the terminal, the immediate decision is how tightly to schedule the journey after landing. The project is intended to improve processing, but the new facilities are not all available now. Our airline and airport planning hub can help place that arrival step within the wider itinerary.

At a Glance
  • Location: Terminal 1 arrivals border control at Prague Airport.
  • Work window: First half of September 2026 to the end of April 2027.
  • Planned additions: Five passport desks and four automated EasyGoGates.
  • Near-term risk: Temporary restrictions and queues; no fixed delay estimate is published.

More Passport Capacity Comes After the Works

The airport’s September 4 announcement describes a phased renovation, with a larger waiting area and ventilation improvements alongside the new processing points. Czech police are responsible for supplying and installing the additional desks and automated gates.

The investment is approximately CZK 290 million. That figure covers the project rather than a new passenger charge. The announcement does not introduce an airport entry fee, a paid priority product or a charge to use the renovated area.

For an autumn arrival, the relevant distinction is between planned capacity and available capacity. A project designed to shorten future queues can still create constraints while it is being built. Do not assume that the headline number of new desks is already reflected in the processing available on your travel date.

Three Desks Will Close During One Phase

Prague Airport says the temporary three-desk closure will be scheduled for a lower-traffic period. During other phases, restrictions should mainly affect the space immediately before border control, with passenger routes adjusted around the work.

The release does not identify the exact dates of that closure phase. Nor does it state that passengers will wait a particular number of minutes. The responsible planning response is to allow flexibility after arrival, not to add an invented standard delay to every Terminal 1 journey.

Someone arranging a fixed pickup should distinguish the flight’s landing time from the time they expect to leave the terminal. If a driver charges for waiting, check how that waiting period is measured and how to communicate after landing before choosing the pickup time.

A separate train, coach or appointment presents a different exposure: a border queue could consume the time between arrival and that commitment even if the flight lands as scheduled. Where the timing matters, compare flexible arrangements and the consequence of missing them rather than relying on the flight timetable alone.

Follow the Passenger Route for Your Documents

Expats.cz reported the project on September 10, explaining that Terminal 1 handles arrivals from outside the Schengen Area and that construction may temporarily increase waiting. It also distinguishes the planned extra capacity from the construction-period experience.

The airport says EU citizens can proceed to the passport desks and the automated gates for eligible European passport holders, without EES registration. That is not a promise that every passenger can use an automated gate, or that an electronic passport alone establishes eligibility.

Follow the signs and staff instructions for your own documents. If uncertain about the correct line, ask before joining it; a queue that appears shorter may serve a different group of passengers. The airport’s Red Team will help direct flows as the work progresses.

The construction notice does not change a passenger’s underlying entry requirements. Check those separately for the actual nationality and journey, especially if an itinerary combines an international arrival with another booking. This article does not treat the renovation as a new visa or border exemption.

This Is an Arrivals Project, Not a Terminal Shutdown

The airport plans to keep border processing operating during the phased works. Its warning concerns possible temporary constraints and queues, not a closure of Terminal 1 or a cancellation instruction for arriving passengers.

That distinction matters when deciding whether to alter a trip. The notice alone is not evidence that a booked flight will be disrupted. It is a reason to examine the steps after landing and to watch for a more specific phase notice before travel.

The end-of-April completion is a project target, not a guaranteed opening appointment for each individual desk. Travelers going later in the work window should look for a progress update rather than assuming that a facility will be ready because another part of the project has finished.

Decision Matrix
Your arrival plan What changes
Fixed driver pickup Allow for border processing between landing and terminal exit.
Separate onward booking Review flexibility if a queue uses the connection margin.
Automated-gate use Follow document eligibility and staff instructions.
Travel near project completion Check an updated notice rather than assuming every desk is open.
Planning Impact

September begins the work window. Current arrivals planning should allow for temporary restrictions, not assume the finished capacity.

April 2027 is the completion target. Watch for exact phase dates and subsequent progress notices.
