Airlines have scheduled record winter nonstop capacity from Pittsburgh International Airport to the Caribbean and Florida, according to Cirium schedule data published September 14, 2026 by the airport news outlet Blue Sky News. The first new flight in the build out starts October 2.
For a Pittsburgh flyer the decision is when to buy, because the additions arrive in three separate waves between October and February rather than all at once. If Cancun is the target, our guide to all inclusive Cancun resorts with swim up rooms is worth reading first, since most of those swim up pools are unheated and December through February is the coolest stretch for using them.
- Caribbean seats: scheduled to rise from more than 4,800 to more than 15,600 on nonstop flights in the first quarter of 2027, which Cirium calls the highest total since 2005.
- Florida seats: up 5.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2026 against the same period last year, the highest total for that market in 20 years.
- First new date: Allegiant starts Fort Lauderdale on October 2, 2026, three times weekly.
- Biggest single change: Breeze Airways enters both the Caribbean and a new Florida market on January 7, 2027.
- Status: scheduled, not flown. These are published schedules that airlines can still adjust.
What the Cirium Numbers Actually Measure
The Caribbean figure covers the first quarter of 2027, when airlines are scheduled to increase nonstop seats from over 4,800 to more than 15,600. Cirium describes that as the highest total since 2005, which puts the coming winter ahead of anything Pittsburgh has offered in two decades.
The Florida figure is a separate measurement for a separate period. Scheduled nonstop seats in the fourth quarter of 2026 are expected to rise 5.8 percent against the same quarter a year earlier, the highest total for that market in 20 years.
Both numbers are scheduled seats rather than flown seats. Carriers routinely trim or add frequencies as the season approaches, so treat the totals as the plan of record rather than a guarantee, and check your own dates before assuming a specific departure day exists.
Allegiant Opens the Season on October 2
Allegiant begins Pittsburgh to Fort Lauderdale on October 2, 2026, operating three times weekly on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. That is the earliest of the new dates and the only one that lands inside the fall rather than the winter peak.
The route fills a gap rather than adding to a crowded market. CBS News Pittsburgh reported that Spirit was formerly the carrier between Pittsburgh and Fort Lauderdale, and that Allegiant moved in after Spirit left.
Drew Wells, Allegiant chief commercial officer, framed the additions as a response to industry change, saying the airline wanted to “increase travel options in these markets.” Travelers who previously connected through Orlando or Charlotte for South Florida now have a nonstop option on three days of the week.
Breeze Airways Adds Three Routes on One Day
Breeze Airways is the largest single change in the schedule. On January 7, 2027 it begins Pittsburgh nonstops to Cancun and Punta Cana, both three times weekly on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, flown by the Airbus A220-300.
The same aircraft type serves a third new Breeze route to Vero Beach, also three times weekly on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, running through April 2027. Vero Beach is a small Treasure Coast market with very little nonstop service from the north.
The Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday pattern matters for trip length. It supports four night and seven night stays cleanly, but it does not support a standard Friday to Sunday weekend, so a long weekend in Cancun on Breeze means taking weekdays off.
American and Southwest Restore Seasonal Flying
American resumes seasonal Cancun service on November 7, 2026 and seasonal Punta Cana service on December 19, 2026. Those are returns rather than new markets, and they arrive before the Breeze launches in January.
Southwest expands its seasonal Cancun flying by resuming Saturday flights on February 13, 2027. That single added day is the one piece of the winter build out aimed squarely at Saturday to Saturday resort weeks.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Want South Florida nonstop this fall | Book Allegiant to Fort Lauderdale for travel from October 2, 2026, on a Monday, Friday or Saturday. |
| Want a Saturday to Saturday Cancun week | Wait for Southwest Saturday service resuming February 13, 2027, rather than forcing a midweek pattern. |
| Want Cancun or Punta Cana before January | Use American, which resumes Cancun November 7, 2026 and Punta Cana December 19, 2026. |
| Are chasing the lowest winter fare | Compare after January 7, 2027, when Breeze adds three times weekly service on both Caribbean routes and the seat count peaks. |
| Are booking a swim up resort stay | Check whether the pool is heated before committing to a December through February date. |
October 2, 2026 is the first live date. Fort Lauderdale is bookable on Allegiant from that day, and it is the only new option available before November.
November 7 and December 19, 2026 are the American gates. Cancun and then Punta Cana return on those dates, covering Thanksgiving and the Christmas window respectively.
January 7, 2027 is when supply peaks. Breeze adds three routes at once, so fare comparisons made before that date do not reflect the fuller winter schedule.
