Pacific Surfliner Closes Van Nuys to LA Tracks Sept 19

Pacific Surfliner will close the tracks between Van Nuys and Los Angeles on September 19 and 20, 2026. If your ticket touches that San Fernando Valley to Union Station segment, the train will not take you through.

The operator says a bus bridge will replace the closed track. The station list and times for those buses are not published yet.

What the official advisory actually locks

The Pacific Surfliner Travel Advisories page lists a partial closure for September 19 and 20, 2026. The sentence is short: tracks between Van Nuys and Los Angeles will close so crews can finish capital projects and regular track maintenance.

The same page says alternative bus connections will be arranged to connect between stations. It then tells riders to stay tuned for bus bridge details.

That last line is the live gap. A promised bus is not a published timetable.

The operator repeats the same banner on its schedules page. Advisories and schedules both flag the Van Nuys to Los Angeles weekend, so this is not a hidden footnote on one URL.

The advisory does not name the contractor, the work sites, a first or last bus, or which intermediate stations get a curb stop. It also does not say the rest of the LOSSAN corridor goes dark that weekend.

Amtrak’s current Pacific Surfliner route page still lists Van Nuys, coded VNC, and Los Angeles Union Station, coded LAX, as ordinary stops on the San Luis Obispo to San Diego run. Glendale, coded GDL, sits on that same published corridor between those two points.

Treat the Amtrak page as the living station map, not as a waiver of the September 19 and 20 outage. No independent newsroom has opened a separate confirmation of this partial weekend. The operator pages are the proof.

Do not confuse this weekend with September 12 and 13

Pacific Surfliner already published a harder stop one week earlier. On September 12 and 13, 2026, the operator says no trains will run between San Diego and San Luis Obispo, and no bus bridge will cover that full corridor halt.

The two notices sit on the same advisory page, which is why they are easy to mash together. They are not the same traveler problem. One weekend has no rail and no replacement bus along the whole coastal spine. The next weekend closes only the Van Nuys to Los Angeles tracks and promises buses.

If you hold tickets for both weekends, you have two jobs. First, move or replace the September 12 and 13 trip because there is no published rail or bus substitute for the full corridor. Second, keep the September 19 and 20 trip only if you can absorb a bus transfer whose stops are still unpublished.

Mixing those rules is how people show up at Union Station expecting a train that is not running.

August 12 and 13, 2026, already cut specific Surfliner trains for NCTD bridge repairs and Metrolink riprap near San Clemente. That window is over. It is not this September pair.

Who actually has to change plans

The people who feel this first are riders whose September 19 or 20 trip uses the San Fernando Valley approach into Los Angeles Union Station. A Van Nuys boarding, a Glendale stop, or a Union Station connection on that north side segment is inside the closed track.

A San Diego to Irvine commuter who never crosses Los Angeles toward Van Nuys is not automatically on this bus. A Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo rider is not automatically on this bus either.

The first check is the station list on the ticket, not the brand name Pacific Surfliner. Two people can hold Surfliner tickets for the same Saturday and only one of them is on the closed steel.

Los Angeles Union Station is the hinge. If you are using the train as a downtown arrival, the rail car may stop short of the building and put you on a bus for the last miles. If you are connecting to a Metro line, a flyaway, or a hotel van, the bus arrival point matters as much as the train time you originally bought.

Metrolink’s Ventura County Line also uses Van Nuys. The Metrolink pages opened for this desk do not publish a matching September 19 and 20 Van Nuys to Los Angeles bus plan. Do not assume a Pacific Surfliner bus accepts a Metrolink ticket, and do not assume Metrolink trains will run on the closed Amtrak track.

How to handle a bus bridge that is not on the map yet

A bus bridge is a curb-to-curb replacement, not a second train. You leave the rail car, or you never board one, and you ride a motor coach between named stations until you rejoin steel or you reach your ticketed city.

Pacific Surfliner has not published the first pickup, the last drop, or whether luggage goes under the bus. The honest plan is to leave slack now and refuse to invent a route.

If the later notice lists only Van Nuys and Union Station, intermediate riders may have a longer curb walk than they expect. If it lists every station, the run will be slower because the bus has to work city streets.

Build the trip as if the rail clock is gone. Choose a hotel or a flight that still works if the bus is 45 to 90 minutes slower than the train. Do not buy a nonrefundable airport transfer that assumes a Union Station arrival to the minute.

If the later notice is still blank ten days out, call Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL and ask whether the ticket rides the bus or must be reissued. Pacific Surfliner says flexible fares refund in full if you cancel before departure, with no change fees. Business Class still has to be updated if the plan changes.

Checked baggage is already suspended on Pacific Surfliner trains. A bus bridge makes that limit stricter, not looser. Pack what you can carry up the coach steps.

What remains unknown, and what does not change

Unknown: the bus stop list, the first and last trips, and whether Metrolink will mirror the outage. Known: the dates are September 19 and 20, 2026, and the operator intends buses on the Van Nuys to Los Angeles segment.

This is not a reason to skip Los Angeles for all of September.

A worked check looks like this. Open the reservation. Write the date, the boarding station, and the arrival station. If either end is Van Nuys, Glendale, or Los Angeles Union Station on September 19 or 20, assume the train will not complete that segment on steel. Recheck the official advisory for the bus list. If the list is still missing, move the trip or add slack.

If your September 19 or 20 ticket uses Van Nuys, Glendale, or Los Angeles Union Station, budget time for a bus and do not treat the original train clock as real until the operator publishes the stops.
