According to the official Pacific Surfliner Rail 2 Rail program page, San Diego Comic-Con International is a blackout window from July 22 through July 27, 2026.
During those dates, Metrolink and NCTD COASTER monthly passes stop working as free tickets on Pacific Surfliner trains inside the usual station pairs.

The reverse also holds in normal weeks: Pacific Surfliner monthly pass holders can ride Metrolink or COASTER trains inside their own station pairs without buying a second ticket.
Metrolink's matching Rail 2 Rail page says monthly pass holders can board any Pacific Surfliner train within their valid station pair, show the pass to the Amtrak conductor, and ride without a separate Amtrak fare.
That convenience is why many Orange County and North County San Diego commuters treat Surfliner as a backup when Metrolink or COASTER frequencies thin out, especially on weekends.
Comic-Con week turns that backup off for six calendar days.
Exact blackout dates and the Comic-Con calendar
Pacific Surfliner lists the 2026 Comic-Con blackout as July 22 through July 27.
The same operator page also lists earlier and later capacity blackouts, including Del Mar horseracing opening weekend from July 17 to 20, Labor Day weekend from September 4 to 8, and Thanksgiving week from November 25 to 30.
Metrolink publishes the same Comic-Con range and adds World Cup 2026 blackout days earlier in the summer, plus Memorial Day weekend from May 22 to 26.
The operator's Comic-Con travel tips page frames the 2026 convention as Preview Night on Wednesday, July 22, then public days Thursday, July 23 through Sunday, July 26.
That is why the blackout starts on Preview Night rather than only on the four public exhibit days.
If you planned to ride Surfliner on a Metrolink monthly pass for any of those six days, the free transfer is gone until Tuesday, July 28, when the published Comic-Con blackout ends.

What you must buy when the free pass stops working
On blackout dates, riders who want Pacific Surfliner must hold a valid Amtrak ticket.
Metrolink and Pacific Surfliner both point shoppers to Amtrak.com, the Amtrak app, Quik-Trak machines, station agents, and 1-800-USA-RAIL.
Unreserved coach seats can still fill to standing-room conditions on peak Comic-Con trains, so a confirmed seat matters more than on an ordinary midweek commute.
Pacific Surfliner's Comic-Con tips page explicitly recommends Business Class when you need a guaranteed seat, onboard snacks, and a quieter ride during one of the corridor's busiest weeks.
Business Class inventory is limited per train and can sell out before the day of travel, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings returning north from San Diego.
Do not assume a Metrolink monthly pass plus a smile will get you past the conductor. The blackout is a capacity control, not a soft preference.
How this differs from codeshare and reservation rules
Southern California riders often mix three related products and treat them as one free network. They are not identical.
Rail 2 Rail is the monthly-pass overflow program on Surfliner and is fully blacked out for Comic-Con week.
Codeshare is a narrower arrangement on selected Pacific Surfliner trains between Los Angeles and Ventura that can accept a wider set of Metrolink ticket types when those trains are not at capacity.
Pacific Surfliner says codeshare is not locked to the same holiday blackout list as Rail 2 Rail, but it can still pause train by train when a train is full or when service is designated all-reserved.
That distinction matters for Ventura County Line riders more than for Orange County to San Diego Comic-Con trips.
If your trip is south of Los Angeles toward Santa Ana, Irvine, Oceanside, or San Diego, do not plan on codeshare as a workaround. Buy Amtrak.

Comic-Con station logistics once you hold a real ticket
Pacific Surfliner's tips page says trains into San Diego Santa Fe Depot put riders within a short walk of the free Comic-Con shuttle network.
After you leave the depot, the operator points travelers to the One America Plaza and Westin Bayview area for the free Blue Route shuttle toward the convention district.
Shuttle hours listed for the convention period run early morning into late night on Thursday through Saturday, with a shorter Sunday window, and no service overnight between about 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
You still need a valid Comic-Con badge to board those convention shuttles. The train ticket only solves the rail segment.

Who is not helped by a monthly pass this week
Rail 2 Rail never covered Amtrak long-distance trains such as Coast Starlight, Southwest Chief, or Sunset Limited.
It also does not override Amtrak bicycle reservation rules. Even in normal weeks, Metrolink says bike riders must buy a Pacific Surfliner ticket with a bike reservation rather than relying on the monthly pass alone.
During the Comic-Con blackout, that bike rule is simply louder: you need both the Amtrak fare and the bike space.
Kids Ride Free and other Metrolink promotional tickets do not convert into Surfliner blackout rides either. Metrolink states that free-ride promotions do not apply to Pacific Surfliner trains under Rail 2 Rail or codeshare.
If your household planned a cheap multi-stop weekend on one Metrolink monthly pass plus Surfliner hops, reprice the Amtrak legs now instead of improvising on the platform.
- Buy Amtrak now: Purchase Surfliner tickets for every July 22 to 27 trip that would have used Rail 2 Rail.
- Prefer reserved seats: Use Business Class when coach looks crowded or you cannot risk standing.
- Separate the products: Do not mix Metrolink free promotions, codeshare assumptions, and Rail 2 Rail into one plan.
- Time the depot walk: Build buffer from Santa Fe Depot to the free Comic-Con shuttle stop.
- Watch later blackouts: Labor Day and Thanksgiving weeks already sit on the same official blackout list.
Capacity blackouts exist because Surfliner is the only frequent intercity rail spine between San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. When a major downtown event packs that spine, the free monthly-pass overflow is the first product operators turn off.
The traveler decision this week is therefore mechanical: if you need Pacific Surfliner between July 22 and July 27, hold an Amtrak ticket before the conductor reaches your car.
