NJ Transit has added event tickets that activate automatically for MetLife Stadium trips, just ahead of the Giants hosting the Cowboys on September 13, 2026. The agency’s September 10 announcement also sets out a boarding requirement that fans cannot skip: a valid rail ticket must be exchanged for a wristband before boarding the stadium shuttle.
The app change took effect September 9, and tickets for Sunday’s game are available now. For visitors deciding where to stay in New York City, the important distinction is that a Manhattan hotel does not mean a direct stadium train: Penn Station passengers must change at Secaucus Junction.
- New app feature: Choose the game or event, with rail tickets valid only on that selected date.
- Activation: Event tickets activate automatically on the event day.
- Boarding: Wristbands are required at both Secaucus Junction and Meadowlands Station.
- Season opener: Giants versus Cowboys on September 13 starts the regular season rail service.
The App Removes One Step, Not the Wristband Check
According to NJ Transit’s new NFL service notice, customers using the event purchasing feature select the specific game they plan to attend. The resulting ticket activates on that date, removing the manual activation step for this ticket type rather than changing the activation rules for every ticket in the app.
That distinction matters if a group is buying ahead for several games or if someone already holds a different rail ticket. The announcement describes event specific tickets as valid only for the selected date, so buyers should confirm the game shown before completing the purchase and should not treat the ticket as a flexible pass for another home fixture.
At designated areas of Secaucus Junction, passengers show their valid Meadowlands rail ticket and receive a wristband. NJ Transit says only passengers wearing wristbands may board the DoorDash Meadowlands Rail Line at Secaucus and at Meadowlands Station, and the band serves as proof of payment for the trip back after the game.
Fans Arriving by Car Can Still Take the Train Home
The agency provides a separate procedure for people who reach the stadium by another mode and decide to leave by rail. They can buy through the NJ Transit app or pay electronically, with no cash accepted, at a designated ticket agent area outside the stadium; a valid ticket or accepted payment is then used to obtain the boarding wristband.
A ticket bought electronically from that stadium agent covers only the journey to Secaucus Junction. Anyone continuing to New York or another NJ Transit destination needs an additional ticket for that onward leg, so a last minute switch from a car ride to the train should include both the fare and the connection check.
The New York Giants’ own game day guidance separately tells fans that wristbands are needed for stadium trains and that people arriving by other means can obtain them at tents beside the station. It is team guidance corroborating the boarding procedure, not a promise that buying a band reserves a seat on a particular departure.
Secaucus Is the Connection That Determines the Return
NJ Transit will run Meadowlands service for every Giants and Jets home game through the regular season, with individual timetables published closer to each event. Before kickoff, peak shuttle service generally runs about every 10 to 20 minutes, but fans should check the actual last departure from Secaucus rather than assuming that frequency continues indefinitely.
After an event, the agency describes peak trains as departing at least every 15 minutes on a load and go basis until crowds ease, then as needed. A frequent shuttle out of the stadium does not guarantee a late connection from Secaucus, particularly after an evening game when the final train toward a hotel or home may become the limiting factor.
Passengers starting at Penn Station should choose a train marked SEC on the departure board and transfer at Secaucus. Hoboken has limited direct service on selected trains before weekend NFL games and limited direct return service on the last stadium trains, so travelers should use the specific schedule rather than assume every departure is direct.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Buy in the new event section | Confirm September 13 for the Cowboys game; that ticket activates on the chosen date. |
| Travel from Manhattan | Choose a train stopping at Secaucus, then collect the wristband before the stadium shuttle. |
| Arrive by car but leave by train | Use the app or an electronic payment at the stadium agent area and obtain a wristband. |
| Continue beyond Secaucus after the game | Check the last onward train and ensure your ticket covers that additional journey. |
Before September 13: Update the app, choose the correct event and consult the published game timetable, including the final connection from Secaucus.
At the boarding checkpoint: Keep the rail ticket ready to show and retain the wristband for the trip back. Automatic activation does not replace this physical boarding check.
Do MetLife event tickets activate automatically?
Yes. NJ Transit’s new event tickets activate on the selected event date, starting with the feature introduced September 9, 2026; that statement does not apply to every ticket type.
Is there a direct train from New York Penn Station?
No. Take an NJ Transit train that stops at Secaucus Junction, then transfer to the Meadowlands service.
Can I pay cash for the train after the game?
Not at the designated stadium ticket agent procedure described in the new notice. Use the app or an electronic payment, then obtain the required wristband.
Does a stadium agent ticket cover my whole trip home?
No. NJ Transit says that ticket covers Meadowlands to Secaucus only; further travel requires an additional ticket and a usable onward connection.
