New Zealand Sets Visitor Visa Deadline for September 24

Immigration New Zealand said that from 24 September 2026, new applications for most visitor visas must be filed through its enhanced Immigration Online system. The agency’s 11 August announcement is the current official instruction: the older online portal will stop taking new files for the listed visitor visa types on that date, and unfinished drafts left in the old system will be deleted on 8 October 2026.

If you still need a visitor visa for a New Zealand trip, finish any draft now or start in the new system before you lock hotels or Lord of the Rings filming locations. Visa-waiver travelers who use a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority, or NZeTA, are not in this change. The people who are in it are applicants from countries that still require a visitor visa, plus anyone already mid-form in the old portal.

At a Glance
  • New filings: From 24 September 2026, most visitor visa types must start in enhanced Immigration Online.
  • Drafts: Unfinished files in the old portal are deleted on 8 October 2026.
  • Who is in it: Visitor visa applicants, not most NZeTA travelers.
  • Still on the old form: Partner of a New Zealander and Child of a New Zealander visitor visas.
  • Paper exception: Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa stays paper only.

September 24 Closes New Filings in the Old Portal

Immigration New Zealand will no longer let customers create new applications in the old online system for a long list of visitor visa types from 24 September 2026. New files for those visas must go through enhanced Immigration Online. The agency said it is closing the older forms so it can focus on one faster channel for both customers and staff.

That date is the first hard gate for anyone who has not yet started. If you are applying for a standard visitor visa, a business visitor visa, a guardian visa, a medical treatment visa, a parent and grandparent visitor visa, a sports events visa, visiting media, super yachts, or a private yacht or plane visitor visa, treat 24 September as the last day the old portal will open a fresh file. Group, Approved Destination Status, and tour escort visitor visas already moved on 24 August 2026.

Auckland is still the main air gateway for most long-haul arrivals, including people connecting toward the Auckland to Waiheke ferry. The portal change does not alter landing rules at the airport. It changes how you prove you are allowed to visit before you fly.

October 8 Wipes Unfinished Draft Applications

Existing drafts can still be completed and submitted in the old system after 24 September. Immigration New Zealand said it will contact people who have drafts sitting in that portal. You do not need to resubmit an application that is already lodged.

The second gate is 8 October 2026. On that date the listed old forms close, and any remaining draft applications are deleted. If you still want to apply after a draft is wiped, you must start again in enhanced Immigration Online. Submitted files stay reachable in the old system so you can upload documents and answer Immigration New Zealand requests until a decision is issued.

Immigration Chambers, an Auckland immigration law firm, independently walked through the same two dates after the agency posted the notice. Its 21 August briefing matches the official sequence: 24 September for new filings, 8 October for draft deletion, and a separate later transition for Partner of a New Zealander and Child of a New Zealander visitor visas.

Visa Waiver Travelers Stay on NZeTA

Most visitors from visa-waiver countries do not file a visitor visa at all. They request an NZeTA before travel. Australian citizens traveling on an Australian passport do not need an NZeTA. This portal change is not an NZeTA rewrite, and it is not a new entry ban.

Immigration Chambers named India, China, the Philippines, and several Pacific Island nations as the traveler groups for whom timing matters, because those passports still need a visitor visa rather than an NZeTA. If you hold a United States, United Kingdom, Japanese, or other visa-waiver passport, your next step is still the NZeTA channel, not enhanced Immigration Online for a visitor visa.

Transit is a separate product. Enhanced Immigration Online already lists Transit Visa among the applications that system can take. Do not treat this visitor-visa form closure as a new transit-paper rule. If you are only airside at Auckland for under 24 hours, check the transit visa or transit NZeTA page that matches your passport, not the visitor visa list.

Enhanced Immigration Online Changes the Filing Steps

Enhanced Immigration Online is the newer platform Immigration New Zealand has been rolling onto since 2021. The agency says the smart form asks only the questions that fit your visa type, nationality, and starting point. You need a RealMe login, an acceptable passport-style photo, and a credit or debit card to pay. You do not upload a medical certificate up front. Officers ask for health evidence later if they need it.

Once a file is in, you can watch status on the Immigration Online dashboard and get email if anything changes. Applications can be shared with a licensed adviser, a family member, or another helper. Immigration New Zealand also says more than one officer may work a file at the same time, which is meant to cut waiting.

Current wait times still belong on the official visitor visa and NZeTA wait times page, which Immigration New Zealand updates weekly. In the latest four-week snapshot, a standard Visitor Visa averaged about one week, with most completed within two weeks. Business visitor visas were faster, at a few days. NZeTA requests averaged 24 hours, with a three-day allowance. Partner of a New Zealander visitor visas, which stay on the old form for now, were much slower, at about six weeks on average.

Partner and Child of New Zealander Forms Stay Put

Not every visitor product moves on 24 September. Partner of a New Zealander and Child of a New Zealander visitor visas remain in the old system until Immigration New Zealand transitions them later. Family-linked visitor visas for partners and children of workers, students, and military personnel already moved in June 2026, and the agency said those enhanced-system files are prioritized for assessment.

One listed product stays on paper: the Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa. For every other type on the 24 September list, plan to file in enhanced Immigration Online. If you need help with the new form, use Immigration New Zealand’s applying-online guidance or contact the agency rather than posting a paper pack.

If the trip is built around Queenstown hiking, wine, or a winter hut rather than Auckland, the visa channel is still the same national system. Finish the immigration step first, then use a place page such as things to do in Queenstown to sequence the days on the ground.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Need a visitor visa and have not started Create the file in enhanced Immigration Online. Do not open a new draft in the old portal after 24 September 2026.
Have an unfinished draft in the old portal Submit it before 8 October 2026, or start again in the new system if you will miss that date.
Already submitted in the old system Do nothing. Keep using that file to upload documents until Immigration New Zealand decides it.
Travel on a visa-waiver passport Request an NZeTA. This visitor visa portal change does not apply.
Are a partner or child of a New Zealander Stay on the old visitor visa form until the agency moves that category.
Planning Impact

24 September 2026 is the new-application gate. After that date, listed visitor visa types can be started only in enhanced Immigration Online. Get a RealMe account and an acceptable photo ready before you sit down to file.

8 October 2026 is the draft-deletion gate. Unfinished old-portal drafts are removed. A deleted draft is not a refused visa, but you lose the work and must start again.

Weekly wait times still govern trip padding. Build at least two weeks after a standard visitor visa filing, and longer if you are on a Partner of a New Zealander file, before you buy nonrefundable fares.

The Trafficking Child Victim Visitor Visa stays paper only. For the visas moving on 24 September 2026, use enhanced Immigration Online rather than a paper pack.

How long does a New Zealand visitor visa take right now?
