Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has walked away from a plan to build a day resort in Bermuda. The Bermuda Land Management Corporation said the company told it on 17 August 2026 that it would not pursue the roughly 18 acre Daniel’s Head property in Sandys Parish, ending talks that began with a non-binding agreement in July 2025, according to the corporation’s statement published by Bernews.
For cruise passengers, nothing changes on the ground: Bermuda calls still center on the Royal Naval Dockyard and the island’s public beaches. Our Bermuda cruise port guide covers how the Dockyard, ferries and buses fit together on a port day.
- What ended: Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ interest in Daniel’s Head, Sandys Parish.
- When: the company notified the land corporation on 17 August 2026.
- What it was: a non-binding July 2025 agreement to study a day tourism development.
- What it was not: a lease or any development right, the corporation says.
- Next: the corporation plans to invite other partners to propose ideas.
The Land Corporation’s Statement
The Bermuda Land Management Corporation said the discussions grew out of a memorandum of understanding announced in July 2025, under which Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings agreed to assess the property and explore investing in it as what the statement calls a first class day tourism product.
The corporation was explicit that the agreement carried no commitment: it “did not constitute an agreement to develop Daniel’s Head,” and no lease or development rights were granted. Any project would have needed further conceptual and financial evaluation plus stakeholder engagement.
Chief executive Andrew Dias said the corporation was “naturally disappointed” that the company decided not to pursue the opportunity at this time, as reported by The Royal Gazette, which noted that in June 2026 the corporation had described negotiations as complex.
A Site Next Door to the Dockyard
Daniel’s Head sits at the western end of Bermuda in Sandys Parish, the same parish as the Royal Naval Dockyard where cruise ships berth. Cruise Hive puts the site roughly 15 to 20 minutes from King’s Wharf.
That proximity is what made the site interesting to a cruise operator: a short transfer from the pier, rather than a tender ride or a long bus trip across the island. With the plan shelved, there is no cruise line controlled beach club in the pipeline for Bermuda.
What This Means for a Bermuda Port Day
Bermuda already differs from most Caribbean calls. Many Bermuda itineraries include an overnight at the Dockyard, which gives passengers time for the public ferries to Hamilton and St George’s, the beaches along the South Shore, and the forts and museums around the Dockyard itself.
Because no private day resort was ever built or booked, no existing shore excursion or itinerary changes as a result of this decision. What the news removes is a possible future option, not something travelers can book today.
| If you are… | What to know |
|---|---|
| Booked on a Bermuda cruise | Nothing changes; your call still uses the Dockyard. |
| Hoping for a private beach club | No cruise line project is in progress at Daniel’s Head. |
| Planning a beach day | Public beaches and ferries remain the main options. |
| Watching the site | The land corporation says it will seek other partners. |
| Comparing lines | No line has announced a Bermuda private destination. |
The Private Destination Model
Private beach clubs and islands let a cruise line control the day: it sets the food, the drinks, the excursions and the capacity, and it keeps the spending on its own books. That model has spread quickly in the Bahamas and the western Caribbean, where lines own or lease large sites.
Bermuda is a harder fit. The island is small, land is scarce and public opinion on tourism development matters, which is why the corporation stressed stakeholder engagement in its statement. The decision by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings does not explain itself publicly, and no reason was given in the statements reviewed.
What Happens to the Site Now
The corporation says it remains committed to finding a commercially sound partner whose proposal delivers meaningful benefits for Bermuda and the surrounding community, and that it intends to invite other experienced partners to submit concepts.
No timeline was given for that process, and no other company has been named. Treat any future Daniel’s Head plan as unannounced until the corporation says otherwise.
No change now: Bermuda port days run as they do today.
Off the table: a Norwegian day resort at Daniel’s Head.
Open question: who, if anyone, develops the site next.
