How NC By Train Makes Local Transit Free on 7 Networks

NC By Train passengers can now turn a Raleigh to Charlotte rail ticket into a local transit pass at no additional cost. The new Rail & Ride program connects eligible train trips with participating buses and, in Charlotte, the LYNX light rail system. Travelers still need to request a code and activate it in the correct local transit app before boarding.

The September 8 launch changes the last mile calculation for games, festivals, meetings and weekend trips along North Carolina’s busiest intercity rail corridor. A visitor weighing a car-free stay can pair the new benefit with Deep Arrival’s Raleigh trip planner, then check whether the hotel or attraction sits on a participating route.

The word free needs one important boundary. Rail & Ride covers the participating local connection, not the NC By Train ticket itself. It also does not make every transit agency in the state eligible. Kannapolis and Salisbury are excluded, Greensboro joins October 1, and local schedules still control whether a connection works.

At a Glance
  • What changed: An eligible NC By Train ticket can include participating local transit at no added cost.
  • Where it works: The Raleigh to Charlotte corridor, with named partners in the Triangle, Triad and Charlotte.
  • How to use it: Request a code by email, then redeem it in the UMO or CATS Pass app.
  • October change: Greensboro Transit Agency is scheduled to join October 1.
  • Main limits: Kannapolis and Salisbury are not included, and the code is tied to the train trip.

One Train Ticket Now Unlocks Several Local Networks

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says Rail & Ride is available to customers traveling between Raleigh and Charlotte. The participating list spans GoTriangle, GoRaleigh, Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation, Winston-Salem Transit Authority, High Point Transit System, LINK Transit and Charlotte Area Transit System. Greensboro Transit Agency is due to join on October 1.

That list does not mean one code works everywhere. The official instructions divide the corridor into regional redemption paths. Triangle and Triad riders use the UMO Mobility app. Charlotte riders use the CATS Pass app. A traveler using local transit before the train and again after arrival must submit the request separately for each mode to receive both codes.

GoCary and GoDurham appear in the Triangle instructions because those systems are already fare free. They do not require Rail & Ride payment coverage. This distinction matters when travelers map a trip that crosses agency boundaries, because the app, code and boarding step can change even within the same metro area.

The Free Connection Still Requires Advance Setup

The process starts after the traveler has an NC By Train booking. On the official Rail & Ride page, the passenger enters trip information to request a benefit code by email. That code is then entered in the participating agency’s mobile app to create the local pass or QR credential.

For GoTriangle and GoRaleigh, riders download UMO, create or enter an account, select GoTriangle as the location and choose Redeem Benefit Code. The app generates a QR code used when boarding. The Triad instructions also use UMO, but direct riders to PART before they enter the emailed code.

Charlotte works differently. Riders open CATS Pass, create an account, add payment information, select a local bus and LYNX adult day pass, and enter the Rail & Ride code as a promo code in the cart. The pass should then appear in the app wallet and must be activated before boarding. Adding payment information is part of the published workflow even though the eligible pass itself carries no added cost.

Travelers should complete these steps while they have a reliable connection. A code sitting in an email is not the same as an activated pass, and a dead phone or app login problem can erase the convenience at the moment it matters. The program pages list separate assistance numbers for the Triangle, Triad and Charlotte.

Raleigh, the Triad and Charlotte Have Different Coverage

In the Triangle, the benefit works with GoTriangle and GoRaleigh. Those networks can help travelers connect Raleigh Union Station with downtown stops, regional destinations and transfer points, but the trip planner should be checked for the exact day and time. A train arrival does not guarantee that a particular bus is waiting.

Across the Triad, PART, Winston-Salem Transit Authority, High Point Transit System and LINK Transit participate. This creates more options than a station-to-downtown shuttle, but it also introduces transfers. Travelers should compare total travel time with the price of a taxi or rideshare before assuming the free path is the fastest one.

Greensboro is the notable delayed start. NCDOT’s launch release names Greensboro Transit Agency but says it will join October 1. A September passenger should not build a Greensboro plan around the future benefit. Kannapolis and Salisbury are explicitly outside Rail & Ride, so a ticket that stops there does not create a local pass through this program.

The Biggest Saving May Be Parking, Not Bus Fare

Local transit fares are only one piece of the value. A visitor who can move from home to station, ride the train and reach a destination by transit may avoid downtown parking, event traffic and a second vehicle. That can make the benefit more useful for a full day in Raleigh or Charlotte than the face value of a single bus ride suggests.

The reverse is also true. A free connection is not automatically a good connection. Families with luggage, travelers with mobility needs and anyone arriving late should inspect walking distance, transfer time, accessibility details and the final return departure. The program removes an eligible fare, not the operational risk of a missed train.

NCDOT says the launch supports car-free travel to games, festivals and weekend getaways. That is a useful planning frame, but each event creates its own pressure points. A crowded platform, street closure or special service plan can change the best stop. Check the local agency alert page again on travel day.

Current Rail Adjustments Still Apply to the Trip

Rail & Ride does not override the train timetable. NC By Train is currently warning that select Piedmont and Carolinian services have temporary schedule changes from August 31 through October 8 because of track work. Travelers should verify the train number and departure time before matching a local route to it.

The emailed code is also tied to the NC By Train trip. It is not described as a general transit giveaway or a reusable monthly pass. The official page tells travelers to enter their actual trip details and use the benefit only with participating systems. If the rail itinerary changes, request current instructions rather than assuming the old code remains valid.

A September 8 report from Progreso Hispano News independently confirmed the launch, the participating systems and the app redemption model. The controlling details, however, remain the current NCDOT and NC By Train pages because partners and instructions can change after launch day.

Connection Matrix
Region Partner and redemption path
Triangle GoTriangle and GoRaleigh through UMO Mobility
Triad PART, Winston-Salem, High Point and LINK through UMO Mobility
Greensboro Greensboro Transit Agency joins October 1
Charlotte CATS bus and LYNX light rail through CATS Pass
Not included Kannapolis and Salisbury receive no Rail & Ride benefit
Planning Impact

Before booking: Confirm that both the train station and final destination connect to a participating local route.

Before departure: Request every required code, install the right app and verify the pass appears in the wallet.

On travel day: Recheck the train schedule, local alerts and the final return connection before relying on a car-free itinerary.

Frequently Asked

Does Rail & Ride make the NC By Train ticket free?

No. Travelers still purchase the qualifying train ticket. The new benefit covers eligible connections on participating local transit at no additional cost.

Which app is required for the free connection?

Triangle and Triad riders use UMO Mobility. Charlotte riders use CATS Pass. The code is delivered by email after the passenger submits trip information.

Can one code cover transit at both ends of the train trip?

The official instructions say travelers using one system to reach the departure station and another after arrival should submit the form separately for each mode to receive both codes.

Does Rail & Ride work in Greensboro now?

Not yet. NCDOT says Greensboro Transit Agency is scheduled to join on October 1, 2026. September trips should use the transit options available at the time of travel.

Are Kannapolis and Salisbury included?

No. The official program page specifically excludes Kannapolis and Salisbury from Rail & Ride, even though the benefit otherwise covers eligible travel between Raleigh and Charlotte.
