MTA Cuts 1 2 and 3 Weekend Service Through August 24 for Lower Manhattan Work

New York City weekend and late-night subway plans just got harder for lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is running major service changes on the 1, 2, and 3 lines through August 24, 2026, while crews replace tracks north of Chambers Street.

According to the MTA, every weekend from July 24 through August 24 the 3 train is fully suspended, the 1 train stops short of South Ferry, and the 2 train stops short of Brooklyn. Weeknight cuts already began July 20 and continue in blocks through late August, which matters for travelers who time Broadway shows, cruise transfers, or late JFK and Newark connections through midtown.

At a Glance
  • Window: Track work July 20 through August 24, 2026, on the 1, 2, and 3 lines.
  • Weekends: July 24 to August 24, Friday 11:30 p.m. to Monday 5 a.m.
  • Hard cuts: Full 3 suspension; 1 ends at 14 St; 2 ends at 34 St-Penn toward Brooklyn.
  • Why: Track and switch replacement north of Chambers Street.
  • Action: Rebuild South Ferry, Chambers, Penn Station, and Brooklyn routes before weekend arrival.

What the MTA is changing on weekends

The MTA’s summer 2026 service-change article, updated July 20, 2026, says crews are replacing track and switches north of Chambers Street, a key junction for Broadway and Seventh Avenue service.

SILive reports the same July 24 through August 24 weekend package for Staten Island and citywide riders who depend on Broadway-Seventh Avenue service for lower Manhattan and Brooklyn transfers.

Every weekend from July 24 to August 24, from 11:30 pm Friday to 5 am Monday, 1 trains will not run between 14 Street and South Ferry.

Those trains instead run between Van Cortlandt Park-242 Street and 14 Street about every eight minutes by day and evening.

2 trains will not run between 34 Street-Penn Station and Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn College. They will run between 34 Street-Penn Station and East 180 Street, then on the 5 line to and from Eastchester-Dyre Avenue about every ten minutes by day and evening.

3 trains will be suspended for the full weekend window. The MTA is redirecting riders onto 4 and 5 patterns, free shuttle buses in Harlem, and nearby A, C, E, R, and W stations for lower Manhattan and Brooklyn links.

That package is larger than a single-station weekend closure. Anyone planning Battery Park, South Ferry ferry connections, Federal Hall, or the African Burial Ground should treat the 1 train as midtown-only on those weekends and map an alternate from 14 Street south.

Deep Arrival’s guides to African Burial Ground National Monument and Federal Hall National Memorial remain useful for the lower Manhattan sites themselves, but weekend transit into those blocks now needs a non-1 path.

Hotel and conference travelers who normally ride the 1 straight from midtown hotels to the Financial District should rebuild that hop now. A short R or W ride plus a walk often beats waiting for a suspended Broadway train that never appears on the board.

Weeknight cuts that still hit hotel and theater trips

Weeknight changes run on a different clock from July 20 to 24 and July 27 to 31, when the MTA suspends 1 service between 34 Street-Penn Station and South Ferry from 9:30 pm to 5 am.

On those same nights it also suspends 2 service between Penn Station and Brooklyn and suspends the 3 train overnight. Theater exits and late Amtrak arrivals at Penn therefore need a backup line before you leave the venue.

In August the pattern shifts. On August 3 to 7 and August 10 to 14, 2 trains run in two sections overnight, with a Chambers Street transfer between the Wakefield-to-South Ferry section and the Chambers-to-Flatbush section about every 24 minutes.

On August 17 to 21, late-night service again drops 1 trains south of 14 Street, drops 2 trains south of Penn Station into Brooklyn, and suspends the 3 train.

For travelers, the practical takeaway is simple: a 10 p.m. show exit near Times Square or a late Penn Station arrival is no longer a clean 1, 2, or 3 ride to the tip of Manhattan on those nights.

Use the A, C, E, R, or W for lower Manhattan when the Broadway line is cut, and budget walk or transfer time at 14 Street, Chambers Street, or Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center.

If you are connecting to an airport bus or a PATH train after midnight, add at least 20 minutes on the listed weeknights. Stacked delays at transfer stations are more common when one of the main north-south trunks is offline.

How visitors should rework common itineraries

Cruise guests using South Ferry or Whitehall for Staten Island Ferry links should not count on the 1 train at weekend or listed weeknight hours. Walk or transfer from nearby R and W service, or from the 4 and 5 at Bowling Green when those lines are running their detour patterns.

Hotel guests around Chambers Street, World Trade, and the Financial District should treat Chambers as a transfer hub, not a guaranteed 1 or 2 through-stop. The MTA explicitly points riders between Chambers and South Ferry, and between Chambers and Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center, to nearby A, C, J, and Z options depending on the hour.

Brooklyn visitors heading to Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn College or New Lots Avenue lose direct 2 and 3 weekend service. The agency says 4 trains run to New Lots Avenue with local Brooklyn stops except Hoyt Street, while 5 trains cover Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn College on the weekend plan.

Bronx riders keep service, but not always on the usual line colors. Weekend and several weeknight plans put 2 trains onto the 5 to Eastchester-Dyre Avenue and 5 trains onto the 2 to Wakefield-241 Street.

Check the train designation on the platform board before boarding. A car that looks like your usual route may be running to a different terminal under the temporary plan.

Between Harlem-148 Street and 135 Street, free shuttle buses replace suspended 3 local access during the listed windows. That matters for hotel and hospital trips that usually use those 3 stops after dark.

The MTA also published overview maps for midtown and lower Manhattan, upper Manhattan and the Bronx, and Brooklyn. Save those map links from the official article before you leave the hotel Wi-Fi.

For same-day confirmation, the agency points riders to planned service changes, the MTA app, and Weekender email alerts. Other projects can stack on this package without a separate headline in your hotel newsletter.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Need South Ferry or Battery Park on a weekend Do not plan on the 1 south of 14 St. Use R/W or 4/5 paths and walk the last blocks.
Arrive late at Penn Station on listed weeknights Assume no 1 or 2 south after 9:30 pm Switch to A/C/E or R/W for lower Manhattan.
Are Brooklyn-bound to Flatbush or New Lots on a weekend Use the published 4 and 5 local patterns instead of 2 and 3.
Stay near Harlem-148 St during suspensions Budget free shuttle buses between 148 St and 135 St, not a direct 3 train.
Hold tickets for August 3 to 14 late nights Expect 2 trains in two sections and a Chambers Street transfer overnight.
Planning Impact
  • Rebuild weekend routes now: South Ferry, Chambers, and Brooklyn 2/3 trips need alternate lines through August 24.
  • Pad late-night theater exits: After 9:30 p.m. on listed weeks, Broadway line cuts force extra transfers.
  • Check maps before you go: MTA posted corridor maps for Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn with this work.
  • Watch train designations: Bronx 2 and 5 swap terminals on several nights and weekends.
  • Recheck the day of: Other planned work can stack on top of this package.
Frequently Asked

When do the 1, 2, and 3 weekend cuts run?

The weekend cuts run every weekend from July 24 through August 24, 2026, from 11:30 pm Friday to 5 am Monday, according to the MTA summer service-change notice.

Is the 3 train completely down on weekends?

Yes for that weekend window. The MTA says 3 trains are suspended and points riders to 4 and 5 patterns, free Harlem shuttles, and nearby lines.

Can I still reach South Ferry on the 1 train?

Not during the listed weekend hours or the matching weeknight cuts. Weekend 1 service ends at 14 Street while work continues.

Why is the MTA doing this now?

Crews are replacing tracks and switches north of Chambers Street and using the outages for structural, electrical, and mechanical work that would otherwise need more shutdowns later.

Where should I confirm my trip the day of travel?

Use the MTA planned service changes page, the MTA app, or the Weekender alerts tied from the official article before you leave for the station.
