Mount Rainier National Park reopened White River Campground and White River Road on September 5, 2026, after summer wildfires, the National Park Service fire page said. The Wonderland Trail remains closed from the Carbon River Suspension Bridge to Frozen Lake near Sunrise, and Sunrise Road stays closed to public vehicles from the White River Road junction.
If you are driving in after Labor Day, treat the north side as a mixed map: some roads and camps are back, and a through hike of the Wonderland Trail is not. For lodging and access bases around the mountain, start with Deep Arrival’s Mount Rainier National Park guide before you lock a campground or trailhead.
- White River: Road, trails along the road, and the campground reopened September 5, 2026.
- Sunrise Road: Closed to public vehicles; pedestrians and cyclists allowed from September 5.
- Wonderland Trail: Closed from Carbon River Suspension Bridge to Frozen Lake near Sunrise until further notice.
- Grand Park 2 Fire: Burned just under 2 square miles and is 100 percent contained, The Seattle Times reported.
- Still closed: Grand Park trails, Northern Loop Trail, and Mount Fremont north of Sourdough Ridge.
White River Campground Reopened September 5
The park shut the Sunrise and White River corridor in early August as the Grand Park 2 Fire began to burn, then kept the north end under additional restrictions as the Wonderland Complex fires ignited later in the month. An emergency regulation signed by the deputy superintendent set September 5 as the White River reopen date. The Seattle Times, citing the park’s update, confirmed White River Road, the trails that start along that road, and White River Campground were back open Saturday.
That is the first real access reset since the August closure. Car campers who lost White River in August can use the campground again. Day hikers who enter from White River Road can use the trails that follow that road. The park is not treating the whole north side as open. Sunrise Road remains closed to public vehicles from the White River Road junction, even though walkers and cyclists may use it from September 5.
If you need a bed outside the park rather than a White River site, Deep Arrival’s where to stay near Mount Rainier page maps Ashford, Packwood, and Enumclaw bases that do not depend on Sunrise Road. Paradise and Longmire on the south and southwest sides were not part of this north side closure and remain the default car access when Sunrise is off limits.
Wonderland Trail Stays Broken for Through Hikers
The Wonderland Trail is the 93 mile loop around the mountain, and the current closure cuts it on the north side. The National Park Service fire page and The Seattle Times both describe the closed segment as running from the Carbon River Suspension Bridge to Frozen Lake near Sunrise. The park’s alerts page also lists the Northern Loop Trail as closed. Through hikers cannot complete the circuit until the park lifts those segments.
Backcountry camps on the closed stretch include Dick Creek, Mystic Lake, and Granite Creek. Carbon River Camp, Ipsut Creek Camp, and the upper and lower Carbon River crossings remain open. That split matters if you already hold a Wonderland permit: you can still use the Carbon River side camps that the park named as open, and you cannot treat the Frozen Lake to Carbon River stretch as a legal through route.
The August Grand Park 2 closure of Sunrise and White River is the earlier chapter of this fire season. Deep Arrival covered that shutdown in Mount Rainier Closes Sunrise and White River for Grand Park 2 Fire when the park first pulled those roads; this week’s park update is the partial reopen, not a new fire. The remaining Wonderland break is what still changes a through hike after Labor Day.
Sunrise Road Is Walk and Bike Only
Sunrise is the highest visitor center area in the park, and the road that reaches it stays closed to public cars. Pedestrian and bicycle access began September 5 from the White River Road junction. That is a long climb on a mountain road that still hosts official vehicles. Do not plan a family sedan trip to the Sunrise parking lots.
Several trails between White River and Sunrise have reopened: Burroughs Mountain, Palisades Lakes, and Sourdough Ridge. Three camps in that pocket are open again: Sunrise Camp, Upper Palisades, and Dick’s Lake. Trails north of Sourdough Ridge remain closed, including Mount Fremont. If your plan was the Mount Fremont lookout, it is still off the map until the park says otherwise.
The park’s alerts page still titles the notice as a Sunrise and White River closure effective August 13, 2026, until further notice, with the September 5 White River reopen carved out by emergency regulation. Read the current alerts page the morning you drive. A Saturday reopen does not freeze the map for the rest of September.
Grand Park and the Southern Fire Closure
All trails in the Grand Park area, including Huckleberry Creek Trail, remain closed until further notice. That is a separate pocket from White River Road. Do not add Grand Park as a backup when White River is open. The Northern Loop Trail, which many backpackers use with the Wonderland, is also closed with its associated backcountry camps.
On the south side, the Butter Creek Research Natural Area remains closed south of Pinnacle Peak Trail down to the park’s southern boundary because of the Plummer Peak fire. Stevens Canyon Road is not closed. Paradise, Longmire, and the main southwest approaches were not part of the north side shutdown. If your trip is a Paradise day hike or a Longmire overnight, this fire map is not your blocker, though you should still check the park’s road status and air quality the morning you go.
The Seattle Times reported that the Grand Park 2 Fire ultimately burned just under 2 square miles and is 100 percent contained. Containment is not the same as full public access. The park is still holding Grand Park trails, Sunrise Road for cars, and the Wonderland north segment because of remaining fire effects and the Wonderland Complex. Do not assume a contained fire means every trailhead is open.
Check the Park Map Before You Drive
The National Park Service publishes the live list on its Mount Rainier wildland fire page and on the park alerts and conditions page. Those two pages are the load bearing sources for what is open. The Seattle Times independently reported the September 5 White River reopen and the remaining Wonderland, Sunrise, and Grand Park limits from the park’s own update.
Air quality was expected to be good for the following week in most of the park as of the September 4 fire page, with possible changes in eastern areas. Smoke can shift on a warm afternoon. If you are hiking with children or anyone sensitive to smoke, check the park’s air quality note the same morning, not the night before.
Other long running limits still sit on the same alerts page and are not this fire. The Grove of the Patriarchs remains closed because a 2021 flood wrecked the suspension bridge, with replacement construction not scheduled until 2028. Do not mix that closure into the fire map. The fire story is the north side roads and the Wonderland break.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Hold a Wonderland through hike after September 5 | Do not start. The trail is closed from Carbon River Suspension Bridge to Frozen Lake near Sunrise until further notice. |
| Want White River car camping | White River Campground and White River Road reopened September 5. Confirm a site and check the alerts page the morning you drive. |
| Planned a Sunrise Visitor Center car trip | Skip it. Sunrise Road is closed to public vehicles. Walkers and cyclists may use the road from September 5. |
| Can shift to Paradise or Longmire | Use the south and southwest sides. Those approaches were not part of this north side fire closure. |
September 5, 2026 is the White River reopen. Road, roadside trails, and the campground are back. It is not a full north side reopen.
Until further notice is the Wonderland and Grand Park gate. Do not book a through hike or a Grand Park day until the park lifts those segments.
Sunrise Road for cars has no public reopen date. Plan Paradise or a bike approach, not a parking lot at Sunrise.
