Miraikan, Tokyo’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Odaiba, closes on Thursday, October 1, 2026, for about six months of refurbishment. The museum’s closure notice says the entire museum is closed from October 1, 2026, to April 22, 2027, which makes Wednesday, September 30, the last day to visit before it reopens on Friday, April 23, 2027.
If Miraikan was on your Tokyo list for October through April, plan around it now. Our list of things to do in Tokyo and our four day Tokyo itinerary can help you fill the gap.
- Museum: Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, Odaiba, Tokyo.
- Last day open: Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
- Closed: October 1, 2026, to April 22, 2027, the entire museum.
- Reopens: Friday, April 23, 2027.
- Coming back: new permanent exhibitions, new Dome Theater programs, a new restaurant and cafe and a larger shop.
Miraikan Closes From October 1 to April 22, 2027
The museum said the closure covers the entire building for facility refurbishment. It first announced the dates in March, and the notice gives October 1, 2026, a Thursday, as the first closed day and April 22, 2027, as the last. During the closure, Miraikan plans to keep up its science communication through events outside the museum and online content.
Miraikan’s regular schedule already closes the museum on Tuesdays, unless a Tuesday is a national holiday, and from December 28 to January 1, according to its hours and admission page. Before the closure, regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with ticket sales ending at 4:30 p.m.
What Changes When It Reopens in April 2027
A September 16 update from Miraikan outlined the renewal. The museum is adding new permanent exhibitions built around themes such as genomes and the brain, and new video programs for the Dome Theater, where visitors can watch full dome 3D films. It also plans a restaurant and cafe with a new concept and a more expansive museum shop.
The update also mentions changes to the partner robot experience and the children’s Curiosity Field, plus improved signs to help visitors find their way around the building. The museum has not published new admission prices for the reopening, so check the admission page again before a spring 2027 visit.
Visiting Before Wednesday, September 30
If you are in Tokyo this week, the last chance to see the current exhibitions is Wednesday, September 30. Tuesday, September 29 is a regular closed day, so that leaves the weekend of September 26 and 27, Monday, September 28, and the final Wednesday.
Admission to the permanent exhibitions is 630 yen for adults and 210 yen for visitors 18 and under, and a combined ticket with the Dome Theater is 940 yen for adults and 310 yen for visitors 18 and under, according to the museum’s admission page. The final days before a long closure can be busier than usual, so go early in the day if you can.
Planning an Odaiba Day While Miraikan Is Closed
The closure affects Miraikan only. Other Odaiba attractions keep their own schedules, so check each one directly before you go. If you were planning a science museum day, build the Odaiba waterfront, shopping and other attractions into your plan instead, or save Miraikan for a trip after April 23, 2027.
Miraikan is not the only big Tokyo museum planning a long closure. Time Out Tokyo reported that the Mori Art Museum in Roppongi will close from September 24, 2027, until late April 2028, after a final exhibition that runs from April 29 to September 23, 2027. That closure is a year away, but it matters if you are planning a museum-heavy Tokyo trip for fall 2027.
For school groups and families planning spring 2027 trips, note that the reopening falls just before Japan’s Golden Week holidays, which usually brings heavy domestic travel.
