The Federal Aviation Administration listed Miami International Airport runway 08L/26R as closed until 2359Z on Oct 31, 2026, in the Oct 1 Air Traffic Control System Command Center operations plan. That SIR line is the current command-center record for one of four MIA runways, and the same FAA ATCSCC advisory lists taxiway closures at the airport until 0400Z on Nov 9.
A ticket that still shows as scheduled is still a ticket. Add connection buffer at Miami through Halloween, check the operating carrier the morning you fly, and keep Fort Lauderdale in mind only if that airport still gets you where you are going. Changes like this sit with the rest of airline and airport operations South Florida travelers already watch.
- Runway: 08L/26R at Miami International Airport.
- FAA listed end: 2359Z on Oct 31, 2026 (7:59 p.m. Eastern).
- NOTAM listed end: 12:00 UTC on Nov 1, 2026 (8:00 a.m. Eastern).
- In effect since: Sep 24, 2026, per NOTAM A2894/26.
- Taxiways: closures listed until 0400Z on Nov 9, 2026.
FAA Lists Runway 08L Closed Through Oct 31
The Oct 1 ATCSCC operations plan, advisory 097, is a controller and airline planning snapshot, not a passenger flyer. Under runway and equipment SIRs it prints a single MIA line: runway 08L/26R closed until 2359Z on Oct 31, 2026. Converted to Eastern Daylight Time, that stamp is 7:59 p.m. on Oct 31. The plan does not say the airport is closed, and it does not list cancellations.
Directorio Cubano on Sep 25 cited NOTAM A2894/26, also logged as 09/481, and dated the same 08L/26R outage from Sep 24 through 12:00 UTC on Nov 1, 2026. That is 8:00 a.m. Eastern, about 12 hours later than the FAA plan line. The article also said an FAA operations plan dated Sep 8 had listed the closure only through Oct 12, then the window moved later.
Until the FAA or Miami-Dade Aviation Department posts a newer end time, treat the later published window as the conservative planning date. If you fly late on Oct 31 or early on Nov 1, assume 08L/26R is still out until the NOTAM drops, then confirm with the airline. Do not treat a social post about “Miami closed” as a substitute for the SIR or the NOTAM.
Taxiway Restrictions Continue Into November
The same Oct 1 FAA plan lists taxiway closures at MIA until 0400Z on Nov 9, 2026, which is midnight Eastern on Nov 8 going into Nov 9. Taxiways are the paved roads aircraft use between gates and runways. Closing several of them beside a closed runway slows how quickly aircraft can taxi even when the remaining three runways are open.
Directorio Cubano named taxiway segments Z, K6, L6, K7, L7, K9, L9, K10, and L10 as restricted from Sep 24, with some of those segments listed only into mid-October. That list is useful for understanding why a gate-to-runway roll can take longer in October. It is not a passenger map of closed terminals.
None of the notices in this reporting name a passenger terminal as closed, and none name an airline as unable to operate from MIA. The story is a capacity cut on one runway plus nearby taxiways. If a named carrier later posts its own irregular-operations notice, that is a separate claim and needs that carrier’s page.
The September 6 Overrun Closed a Different Runway
On Sep 6, 2026, a cargo 767 overrun took runway 12/30 out of service. That event is a different stream from the 08L/26R closure. Deep Arrival covered the overrun in the September 6 runway 12/30 incident report. A later NOTAM on 08L/26R does not update that crash story, and the crash story does not explain this October window.
Miami International still has four runways: 08L/26R, 08R/26L, 09/27, and 12/30. One closed runway leaves three. That is enough to keep the airport open, and it is also thin enough that a second problem, a weather bank, or a busy bank of Cuba and Latin America departures can stack delays faster than on a four-runway day. Build time. Do not invent a shutdown.
Keys travelers who use MIA as the closest airport to Islamorada should still plan on Miami unless the airline reissues the ticket through Fort Lauderdale or Key West. The runway work does not move the Keys any closer to another airport. It only reduces spare concrete on the field you already chose.
Booking and Connection Buffer Through Halloween
Keep a reservation that is still confirmed. The FAA line and the NOTAM do not, by themselves, cancel a seat. Rebooking because you read “runway closed” can cost a fare difference you did not need to pay. The useful move is time: a 45-minute MIA connection that looked fine in August is a poor bet through Oct 31, and a 90-minute connection is the more honest floor on a three-runway day.
International arrivals that need to clear customs and then depart again should add more than that. Miami’s connecting banks for the Caribbean and Latin America are dense in late afternoon. A taxi delay on the closed-runway side of the field shows up to a passenger as a late push, a missed jet bridge, or a bag that misses the outbound. Check the inbound aircraft status before you leave for the airport, not after you park.
Directorio Cubano was explicit that the runway outage is not the same fact as a Delta frequency cut on Miami to Havana. If your Cuba ticket still shows as scheduled, the 08L/26R window is not automatic proof it will cancel. Watch the operating carrier’s app, and use the later of the FAA and NOTAM stamps if you are choosing between a tight evening Oct 31 bank and a morning Nov 1 bank.
Airline Status Beats Terminal Rumors
The passenger-facing proof in this reporting is the FAA command-center plan plus the NOTAM coverage. Miami-Dade Aviation Department did not publish a matching consumer notice in the pages reviewed for this story. That absence is not a contradiction. SIR and NOTAM traffic often stays in the aviation channel until a closure hits terminals, security, or a published flight schedule.
What you should open the morning you fly is the airline’s own flight status, then the MIA site if it later posts a passenger alert, then TSA wait times if you are originating. Ground-stop language on the same FAA page for MIA and Fort Lauderdale is a same-day weather or volume tool. It is not the Oct 31 runway window and should not be copied into a Halloween itinerary as if it were a month-long stop.
If the FAA later reprints the 08L/26R line with a new end time, that is the update to this story, not a second story. Until then, plan on one fewer runway at Miami through Oct 31, budget the extra 12 hours the NOTAM adds into Nov 1, and expect taxiway limits into Nov 9.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Hold a confirmed MIA ticket through Oct 31 | Keep it. Add buffer. The SIR does not cancel the seat by itself. |
| Connect at MIA in under 90 minutes | Treat that as tight on three runways. Prefer 90 minutes or a later bank. |
| Fly late Oct 31 or early Nov 1 | Use the NOTAM end of 12:00 UTC Nov 1 until a newer notice posts. |
| Need a Cuba or Keys itinerary via MIA | Check the carrier app. This runway window is not a Havana frequency cut. |
Sep 24, 2026, is the start of the 08L/26R outage. NOTAM A2894/26 dates the runway closed from that day. Trips already flown are history; trips still ahead should assume three runways.
2359Z on Oct 31, 2026, is the FAA listed end. That is 7:59 p.m. Eastern. Evening banks that day still sit inside the SIR window.
12:00 UTC on Nov 1, 2026, is the NOTAM listed end. That is 8:00 a.m. Eastern. Use this later stamp for overnight Oct 31 to Nov 1 itineraries until a newer notice posts.
0400Z on Nov 9, 2026, is the taxiway window. Even after 08L/26R returns, taxi restrictions can still slow gate-to-runway rolls through that stamp.
How long is the Miami Airport runway 08L closure?
