The National Park Service said on its Mesa Verde conditions page, last updated September 17, 2026, that construction has closed the access roads to Far View Sites and Cedar Tree Tower to all traffic. The same alert says road work on the first four miles of the Main Park Road begins the week of September 20 to 26, with delays of up to 15 minutes.
If you are driving into the park this week, treat Far View Sites and Cedar Tree Tower as unreachable by road and add time on the entrance climb. Keep cliff dwelling tickets and mesa-top loops in the plan using Deep Arrival’s Mesa Verde National Park cliff dwelling visit guide, then check the live NPS alert before you leave Cortez or Mancos.
- Far View and Cedar Tree: Access roads closed to all traffic, per the September 17 NPS alert.
- Main Park Road: Work on the first four miles runs the week of September 20 to 26, with delays up to 15 minutes.
- Tours: Cliff dwelling tours and tour ticket reservations remain open for the season.
- Still driving: The park stays open. Mesa Top Loop and other unsigned roads are not listed as closed.
- Proof: NPS conditions page, with the Far View and Cedar Tree project described earlier by the Durango Herald.
Far View Sites and Cedar Tree Tower Roads Are Closed
The current NPS wording is specific. Construction on the access roads to Far View Sites and Cedar Tree Tower has temporarily closed those roads to all traffic. The alert does not publish a reopen date, so do not assume a same-week return.
Far View Sites is the mesa-top complex with Far View Great House, a dry reservoir, and a tower, reached on a level three-quarter-mile trail when the road is open. Cedar Tree Tower is a tower and kiva stop with a half-mile Farming Terrace Loop nearby. Both sit off the main entrance climb, not on Mesa Top Loop.
The NPS self-guided tours page still lists those sites as open 8:00 a.m. to sunset. That page is a standing description. The September 17 conditions alert is the current road status, and it overrides the generic hours until the park lifts the closure.
Do not treat the Far View Lodge cluster or Far View Terrace as closed unless the park names those buildings. The alert names the access roads to Far View Sites and Cedar Tree Tower. If you booked a room in that cluster, confirm access with your lodging, not with this road notice alone.
Main Park Road Work Runs the Week of September 20
Separately, NPS says road work will begin on the first four miles of the Main Park Road during the week of September 20 to 26. Expect delays up to 15 minutes. That stretch is the climb from the entrance station toward the mesa, the segment every private vehicle uses.
Fifteen minutes is the published ceiling, not a guarantee of a free run. Crews, one-lane controls, and trucks can stack behind a single slow vehicle. If you hold a timed cliff dwelling tour, leave Cortez or Mancos with that buffer already in the clock.
The park did not close the Main Park Road. It warned of delays on a live two-way climb. Other regional airports and the drive from Durango are unchanged. For the air leg into the region, see Deep Arrival’s closest airport to Mesa Verde comparison of CEZ and DRO.
Cliff Dwelling Tours and Mesa Top Loop Still Operate
The same September 17 alert says cliff dwelling tours and tour ticket reservations are open for the season. That is the opposite of a park shutdown. If you hold a Balcony House, Cliff Palace, or similar ticket, the road work is a timing problem, not an automatic cancellation.
Mesa Top Loop Road is a six-mile drive with short paved walks to surface sites and cliff-dwelling overlooks, including Square Tower House Overlook and views of Cliff Palace. NPS lists it as open daily from 8:00 a.m. to sunset, with brief storm closures only when snow must be cleared. It is not named in the current construction alert.
Wetherill Mesa is also absent from the closure list. Confirm that day’s hours on the Wetherill Mesa page before you queue at the gate. Spruce Tree House remains closed to entry because of rockfall, a separate 2015-era safety hold. Overlooks near the museum still give the view.
The longer seasonal clock still matters. Deep Arrival already covered the October 21 end of cliff dwelling tour access in Mesa Verde: Why Oct 21 Ends Access to Every Cliff Dwelling. This week’s road work is a different decision from that tour cutoff.
How to Replan a Drive Into the Park
Build the day around what still moves. Enter on the Main Park Road, accept the 15-minute window on the first four miles, and point the car at Mesa Top Loop, Cliff Palace Loop, or a reserved tour. Skip the Far View Sites turn and the Cedar Tree Tower spur until NPS says those roads are open.
When Far View Sites is open, NPS limits parking there to vehicles under 25 feet because of a tight loop. That rule is moot while the access road is closed. Oversized rigs should not test the spur. Use designated lots on open loops and walk the signed paths only.
Fuel, water, and food still sit outside the closed spurs. Cortez and Mancos remain the practical supply towns. Cell coverage on the mesa is uneven, so screenshot the conditions page before you lose service on the climb.
If your only reason for the drive was Far View Great House or Cedar Tree Tower, wait for a new NPS line that names those roads as open. A delay on the Main Park Road is not a substitute for a closed spur.
Federal Highways Work Behind the Closures
This is not a surprise patch. In March 2026, Mesa Verde Superintendent Kayci Cook-Collins told Montezuma County commissioners that a federal highways project would rebuild access roads near park headquarters, Far View sites, and Cedar Tree Tower, including pavement work, drainage, parking redesign, and historic stone culverts, the Durango Herald reported.
The same briefing said chip sealing on the hill between the park entrance and mile 4 could cause delays. That hill is the first four miles of the Main Park Road now on the September 17 alert. The current notice is the park executing work it already described in public.
NPS has not said when Far View Sites and Cedar Tree Tower roads reopen. Until that line changes, plan as if those two spurs are out. Use the Mesa Verde conditions and alerts page the morning you drive, because the park updates that page when crews shift.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Wanted Far View Sites or Cedar Tree Tower this week | Do not drive those spurs. NPS closed the access roads to all traffic with no reopen date. |
| Are entering on the Main Park Road September 20 to 26 | Add up to 15 minutes on the first four miles and keep tour times padded. |
| Hold a cliff dwelling tour ticket | Keep it. Tours remain open. The risk is the entrance delay, not a tour cancellation. |
| Can shift the Far View stop | Use Mesa Top Loop and signed overlooks, then wait for NPS to reopen the two closed roads. |
Now through the next NPS update is the Far View and Cedar Tree gate. Those access roads are closed to all traffic. Do not count on walking or driving in until the conditions page says otherwise.
The week of September 20 to 26 is the Main Park Road delay window. Budget 15 minutes on the first four miles, especially if a tour has a start time.
October 21 remains the cliff dwelling tour cutoff on the separate seasonal calendar. This week’s road work does not move that date.
