Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Launch Reciprocal Status Match

Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines launched a reciprocal loyalty partnership on July 14, 2026, giving members a new path between hotel status and JAL FLY ON status. The benefit is available worldwide after members link one personal Marriott Bonvoy account with one personal JAL Mileage Bank account.

The word status match does not mean every member receives an equal tier on the other side. Bonvoy members receive 2,000 to 40,000 FLY ON Points each year based on their hotel tier, while JMB members may receive automatic Bonvoy status, a six month stay challenge, bonus points, or a combination of those benefits.

At a Glance
  • Launch date: The linked benefit opened July 14, 2026.
  • Who can join: Members worldwide who hold both a JMB and Marriott Bonvoy account.
  • Bonvoy side: Members receive 2,000 to 40,000 annual FLY ON Points after linking.
  • JMB side: Benefits range from a Silver challenge to automatic Gold plus a Platinum accelerator.
  • Tier snapshot: The status held on the registration date determines the current year benefit.
  • Delivery: JAL says points and status can take up to six weeks to appear.

Every Bonvoy tier now receives FLY ON Points

The official JAL partnership page says a linked Bonvoy Member receives 2,000 FLY ON Points per year. Silver receives 5,000, Gold receives 10,000, Platinum receives 20,000, Titanium receives 30,000, and Ambassador receives 40,000.

These are status points rather than redeemable JAL miles, so they help with FLY ON qualification but do not buy an award ticket. Titanium and Ambassador members can reach Crystal or a higher tier based on their accumulated FLY ON Points, while lower Bonvoy tiers receive a head start rather than automatic airline status.

That distinction matters before a traveler changes flight plans to chase a tier. A Platinum member receives 20,000 FLY ON Points, for example, but still needs to meet JAL’s complete qualification rules for the target status instead of treating the linked grant as a standalone elite card.

JMB members receive different hotel paths by tier

A basic JMB member without FLY ON status can earn Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite after six qualifying nights within six months of linking. A Crystal member receives a shorter Silver challenge requiring four qualifying nights in the same six month period.

Sapphire members receive Bonvoy Silver automatically and can reach Gold after ten qualifying nights in six months. JGC Premier members receive Gold automatically and earn 10,000 Bonvoy points after sixteen qualifying nights, while Diamond members receive Gold plus 15,000 points after sixteen nights.

Diamond members also have a first year path to Platinum after ten qualifying nights within six months. Diamond Metal members receive the same automatic Gold and 15,000 point opportunity, plus a ten night Platinum accelerator that is not described as limited to the first year.

Qualifying nights are narrower than ordinary elite credit

JAL says accelerator nights must come from qualifying rates at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and be completed within six months after the accounts are linked. The FAQ explicitly excludes Elite Night Credits, including credits earned through a Bonvoy promotion, from the Silver, Gold, and Platinum accelerator requirements.

That makes the enrollment date a practical decision. A traveler with several confirmed paid Marriott stays may want the six month clock to include them, while someone without upcoming stays gains little by starting a challenge that cannot be completed with credit card nights or promotional elite credits.

Members should also confirm that names match across both accounts before linking. JAL permits only one account from each program, requires both accounts to belong to the same person, and does not allow several JMB or Bonvoy profiles to be combined under one partnership registration.

The registration date locks the current tier benefit

The program evaluates the member’s eligible status on the exact day of registration. A later upgrade or downgrade during the same calendar year does not change the points or status scheduled for that year, so a member close to a higher tier should compare the value of linking now with waiting until the new tier is actually reflected.

JAL says FLY ON Points should arrive within six weeks after successful account linking. Bonvoy status and points tied to completed hotel requirements may also take up to six weeks after the member satisfies the conditions, and benefits are expected to renew around spring from the second year onward.

The Marriott launch announcement describes the arrangement as an expansion of the existing ability to convert Bonvoy points and JAL miles. The new status layer is separate from those transfer ratios and does not announce a fare discount, award chart change, or new mileage conversion rate.

Account linking also does not merge the two balances or convert points automatically. A member can use the new status benefit while keeping Bonvoy points and JAL miles in their original programs, then make a separate transfer only when the published ratio, award plan, and processing time make sense.

This separation protects a useful decision boundary. Someone interested only in the annual FLY ON Point grant does not need to move hotel points into JMB, while a JMB member pursuing Bonvoy status should count qualifying paid hotel nights rather than assume an airline mileage transfer will advance the stay challenge.

An independent account link produced points immediately

Japanese loyalty site Rikei Miler tested the new linking path on launch day and reported that 20,000 FLY ON Points appeared immediately for a Bonvoy Platinum account. That real account result is faster than the official six week allowance, but members should still plan around the published maximum rather than one early data point.

The same test highlights another limit: holding ordinary JAL Global Club membership without current FLY ON status does not create a direct Bonvoy status match. That member follows the basic JMB path and needs six qualifying nights within six months to earn Silver under the launch table.

Travelers comparing airline benefits can use Deep Arrival’s Japan Airlines guide for the carrier’s broader service context. The partnership changes how status can be earned, but it does not replace the need to check the operating carrier, fare rules, baggage allowance, and award availability for an actual trip.

Member situation Benefit to compare first What to verify
Bonvoy Member through Gold 2,000 to 10,000 annual FLY ON Points Remaining points needed for the desired JAL tier
Bonvoy Platinum 20,000 annual FLY ON Points Complete JAL qualification requirement after the grant
Bonvoy Titanium or Ambassador 30,000 or 40,000 annual FLY ON Points Which FLY ON tier the total balance reaches
Basic JMB or Crystal Silver accelerator Six or four qualifying hotel nights within six months
JMB Sapphire or above Automatic Bonvoy status plus any accelerator Current tier on registration day and qualifying stay plans
Planning Impact

Linking is most valuable when the current tier already produces a useful automatic benefit or when confirmed stays fit the six month challenge. Check the tier shown in both accounts first, because the registration date fixes the current year benefit and later status changes do not revise it.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did the Marriott Bonvoy and JAL status match begin?

The reciprocal partnership opened on July 14, 2026. JAL says eligible members worldwide can participate after linking one personal account from each program.

Do all Bonvoy members receive JAL status?

No. Every Bonvoy tier receives annual FLY ON Points, but only a balance that meets JAL’s full status rules produces Crystal or a higher FLY ON tier.

Do credit card Elite Night Credits count toward the Marriott challenge?

No. JAL says Elite Night Credits, including promotional credits, do not count toward the partnership’s four, six, or ten night status accelerators.

How long does it take to receive the linked benefit?

The official terms allow up to six weeks for FLY ON Points after linking and up to six weeks for Marriott status or points after completing a qualifying stay requirement.

Can a member link accounts with different names?

No. The accounts must belong to the same person, and only one JMB account and one Marriott Bonvoy account can be linked together.
