London Open House Unlocks Free Visits Across 33 Boroughs

London’s Open House Festival opens today, September 12, with free visits and events across all 33 boroughs through September 20, 2026. Organizer Open City is opening a temporary route into architecture that can otherwise be private, difficult to enter or easy to overlook.

The useful distinction is not paid versus free, but reserved versus drop in. Senate House offers different visits on Saturday and Sunday, while Greenwich’s Old Royal Naval College includes spaces with specific access restrictions.

Visitors arriving for the final Sunday should also check the separately announced September 20 disruption to London Euston rail access. A free festival reservation is little help if the train journey no longer reaches London in time.

At a Glance
  • Festival: September 12 through 20 across London.
  • Cost: Festival activities are free; some still require tickets.
  • Senate House: Guided visits are Saturday only; visits without a guide run both opening weekend days.
  • Greenwich: Admiral’s House opens Sunday, September 13, with ground floor access only.
  • Planning: Check each listing, not just the festival’s overall dates.

Free Tickets Are Still Tickets

Open City’s visitor instructions separate ticketed events from drop in openings. The former have limited capacity and require advance booking; the latter may involve a queue, so neither format promises immediate admission at the moment you arrive.

The main booking release was August 19, not today. MoneySavingExpert’s festival coverage reports that several popular tours have filled, including BBC Broadcasting House, BT Tower and Barbican Conservatory, making less prominent buildings and drop in openings especially relevant now.

Do not interpret that report as a real time inventory of every activity. Check the actual listing for your date, and treat any remaining reservation as confirmed only after completing the booking process.

An existing Open House visitor account can be used again this year. Saving an activity to an itinerary also helps organizers communicate changes, but it is not a substitute for reserving a ticketed visit.

Senate House Has Two Different Weekend Plans

The University of London’s event notice makes Saturday, September 12, the day for guided tours. Senate House tours take people in order of arrival, with a maximum of 20 per group, while library tours require advance online tickets and have a maximum of 10.

The published building tour starts are 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. That is a different timetable from the library sessions, which start 15 minutes later, so choose the experience before choosing the hour.

Sunday, September 13, is for exploring without a guide, not a repeat of Saturday’s guided program. The university lists final entry at 4:30 p.m. on both days, even though the overall event ends at 5 p.m.

The festival’s Senate House listing identifies the building as Charles Holden’s Art Deco landmark and describes the library’s substantial arts and humanities collections. The opening is an opportunity to see the institution, not a promise of unrestricted access to every floor, archive or working room.

Greenwich Offers Access Beyond the Familiar Exterior

The Old Royal Naval College program includes short visits to the Grand Square, King William Courtyard and Jacobean Undercroft on September 12 and 13. For these tours, the detailed instructions direct visitors to book in person that day at the Open House table in Lower Grand Square.

That local arrangement matters even though the activity cards say drop in. Arrive at the festival table to establish what is available, rather than assuming a place on the next group because no online ticket was required.

Admiral’s House is a Sunday only option, opening from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with access limited to its ground floor. The listing permits up to two wheelchair users inside at a time, while the Undercroft and King William Courtyard visits are not wheelchair accessible.

Protect the Visit That Matters Most

Build the day around one building you genuinely want to enter, then compare nearby openings with its actual finish time. A small group limit at Senate House and an in person sign up in Greenwich are different constraints, even when both experiences cost nothing.

For September 20 arrivals, Network Rail’s current notice warns of major disruption between Euston and Watford until 4 p.m. Travelers using that corridor should check a current journey planner before committing to an early festival appointment.

Decision Matrix
If You Want Next Step
A guided Senate House visit Choose Saturday and distinguish the building queue from library tickets.
A flexible Greenwich visit Check the day’s Open House table for the listed short tours.
Admiral’s House Choose Sunday, September 13, and check the ground floor access limits.
A final Sunday arrival via Euston Recheck the rail route before reserving a morning visit.

The strongest choice depends on what you want from the visit: a guide explaining a building, a specialist look inside a library, or time to explore independently. Do not substitute one for another simply because they share the Senate House address.

Planning Impact

Opening weekend: Match each venue to its specific date and entry format. The nine day festival window does not mean every building opens every day.

Before departure: Confirm any reservation and the building’s accessibility information. Keep an alternative nearby if a limited tour cannot accommodate you.

One especially prominent opportunity is no longer open to new applications: Open City’s Downing Street ballot closed on August 17. Do not plan a visit there on the assumption that the festival’s opening day brings another public ticket release.

Frequently Asked

Is London Open House Festival free?

Yes, festival activities are free. That does not remove a ticket requirement, cover your transport or include unrelated paid attractions at the same venue.

Can I visit without booking?

Choose an activity listed as drop in, then read its local instructions. Some venues organize tours through an in person sign up on the day.

Does the festival run only this weekend?

No. The festival runs September 12 through 20, but each activity has its own dates, times and admission arrangements.
